what are your thoughts.. re: World trade center?

OK today I was off and met my friend for lunch at south street my dh was going to drive me home since he works down there too. while I was waiting for him to get off work I walked to the WTC site and I have to say the small memorial that is there is lovely anyway a lot of people were taking pics.. Fine.. But this one guy had four kids standing against the fence and was taking there pic and was saying "Cmon Smile" W T F?? Maybe I am sensitive be\/c i was a block away that day but i really think this is wrong not the pics the smile part it was as if Mickeyt Mouse was behind them rathewr than a grave of 2500 people... I totally agree. When DH and I went to Pearl Harbor, I couldn't stand the people taking pictures and smiling wide. What are they thinking?? Chat Icon

I don't like it either but most likely they were tourists because I think non-NYers view it very differently from the rest of us.

as another example - I'm guessing it's the tourists that buy the "WTC merchandise" from the street vendors

I don't think they realize how it can be upsetting to us

Re: what are your thoughts.. re: World trade center?

It's strange. I find it hard to believe that people would pose in front of it. When I was at the Vietnam War Memorial, people were taking photos, but more to have them as a record, like pictures of the statues and a loved one's name.

I have never even been to Ground Zero. I just can't bring myself to go there, and if I saw that happening, i think it would really upset me.

yea thats strange to pose in front of it- I would take pics of it by itself. It is weird to smile at such a background where many suffered. def had to be a tourist- and sure their customs are very different than ours. Chat Icon

Re: what are your thoughts.. re: World trade center?

i dont think it is insensitive...just stupid.
But i have been to other memorials where people were smiling next to it.

Sometimes people don't know how to react...and when taking a pic well it is natural to tell someone to smile

Getting upset at people like this i think is a tad overreactive....

do you know that he didn't do that?
How do you know there wasn't a conversation explaining what happened before they got there...or after..or before you got there or after you left?

I understand someone's sensitivity to it but i think there is sensitive and there is being overly sensitive and reactive...

do i find it weird that someone would say smile next to a memorial...sure
BUT i think saying "smile" when taking a pic is a reflex reaction for some people...and i don't think i would have immediately thought they were being insensitive.....

So i guess i am not really understanding your point? It seemed to me by what you said above that you assumed he didn't talk to these kids...
anyway...i guess i wouldn't be all that upset. Chat Icon

i found it weird that you would have 4 children (or anyone for that matter) pose by the wtc. would you have a child pose next to agrave site no. and basically thats what it is for 2500 people. no i am not one of those people who belives nothing should be rebuilt but right now its not the time to have people pose in front of a giant hole in teh ground. so i was upset annoyed whatever you want to call it, even overeacting i guess you would say, b/c not only was he takign a pic of peopel in front of this site he said smile ( reflex or not i think its wrong, he shouldve thought before he spoke)

Re: what are your thoughts.. re: World trade center?

I always have this aggravation with people who are not directly linked to those events. I actually had someone say to me recently..."well here in the south we have hurricanes & tornadoes.... NYers have planes & buildings...every place has something." I was so appauled that I called her ignorant & left the room. Sometimes I feel like some people who were not in NY, PA, or washington that day see it as a point of reference (pre-911 or post 9-11), or see it as just something they saw on the news. I don't think those people who say or do those things that are perceived as bad to us realize what they are saying or that they are reacting in a way that is insensitive or disrespectful...they just don't see it the same way we do.

Ok not to be a pain but i have to disagree and agree
I don't think people who are from NY PA AND DC are the only ones who can realize the horror and saddness of 9/11. People on that PA flight weren't from PA they were from Boston and California mostly. THOSE people felt the loss more than the people of PA...NO?

And what resulted fro 9/11 was thousands of troops going into Afganistan and then Iraq ..Where many many many people died This is a country wide thing IMO.

And yes i do agree that some people cannot understand what it was like on 9/11 and there after...Just like i probably cannot understand the true travesty that occurred in NO. Not like the people of NO do anyway. IMO that is kinda natural

i agree...
although i am sure there are a lot of dumb azzes out there....i don't think we can assume to know what other people think or feel.

Do i think it impacted NYers the most. But that is bound to happen

i think what was meant by the comment about not undeerstanding the impact of 9/11 was menat that in NY , Pa and Dc is wher the actual damage, physical along with personal loss was. not only did these people die n these areas but we are missing two huge building which is a remninder every day of what happend i think the other states dont have those daily reminders.
also i dont think NO and 9/11 can even be comapred...

Re: what are your thoughts.. re: World trade center?

PA is just where if fell to. Is that a terrible thing to happen in your state...sure. But i believe nobody in PA was hurt by that. IMO the families of the people on that flight are the ones who really felt that impact of that airplane hijack....

NO and 9/11 can be compared in that they were both terrible tragedies that killed thousands of people that lived in the state in which it occured...

BOth were DEVESTATING events

Re: what are your thoughts.. re: World trade center?

New Yorkers are proud.
We don't like people on our turf.. we don't like tourists. period.
Yes- it annoys me to see people smiling in front of World Trade Center- but then again- i take the path from WTC all the time- and while I don't take photos in front of it smiling- I do act as I always act-I kiss my husband, I'll dance with him on the platform at 1am in the morning a little tipsy, I'll play my video game on my cell phone while waiting (In case anyone didn't realize the Path is actually IN the WTC hole). I think it a beautiful testament to life that it goes on- and that no matter what happens to us as a country- we can still laugh too- not just cry- we can find beauty in tragedy- I think we have to.
There's going to be a time when those holes aren't there anymore, they'll still be in some of our hearts- but the rest of the world will have moved on, 9/11 will be a chapter in a history book- it's sad to think of it that way.
But at least that family smiling in front of WTC took the time to really see it and go to it! It is with people that visit the site and take the photos and tell the story to their friends that the memory of what happened on 9/11 will live..
