Shocking News: I got fired today! ETA: message to you all PLEASE READ (AT BOTTOM)
As many of you know i started my job at a magazine company about 6 monthes ago..from day one i didnt love it but i put up with alot..
when my supervisor left i did the job of 2 pple and was barely making 33K. I went to boston and atlanta and covered for so many pple and didnt get one bit of thanks in return...
everyone on hear told me to stick it out and eventually it would pay off.. i tried to learn as much as i can, and i have told every1 numerous stories about the crazies at my office....
THEN the boss who left that i was covering for came back, and all my hard work went completly unoticed when they were in a binde...
well after returning from a business trip last week i was terribly sick with an ear infection that had me out of work for 4 straight days, i had a dr's note and the proof that i was sick, because i had bruises all over my arms from the tests that they ran...
ever since returning to work i noticed my boss was extra rude to me, and last week i even posted that i had worked from 6am till 5pm when the OTHER girl was allowed to leave early and i was not..
well today i knew something was brewing when my boss asked for copies of my time sheets...and then called me, the ceo and the pres. of the company into the office at 4:00 to fire me! can you believe that, fired!
after all the crap i put up with and when I went out of my way to help them when they were in a binde and couldnt find any1 to replace the girl who left.
AND there excuse was that they dont feel like i can handle the pressure of the job so they r letting me go!!! and i told them straight out that if that was the case how come i never received a warning previous to this or any notice that they were unhappy with my work.
i KNOW its b/c i was sick yet I had proof from the dr!!!!!.. they r truly the shittiest pple i have ever worked for and i hope they all get what they deserve, at least i can go unemployment but i am appalled at the way I was treated after all i did for them..
to top if off... on the way home from being fired in the monsoon of weather we had, my phone dropped and broke into a million pieces and all of the phone numbers i had saved r lost
:( I could just cry im aggraivated and annoyed b/c pple can be so dam ****** yet truly relieved that i never hafta look at those phony, backstabbing women in my office ever again..

I was thinking the same.
I hope that you guys are right and that this is a possibility. There are lots of HR people here who might be able to give you advice.
In the meantime, lots of for you. It's their loss.

AND
If they felt that you couldn't handle the job, or the pressure, then why shell out $$$ for you to travel to other sites and perform work for the company????? They're full of SH!T !! Make sure they approve your unemployment, and if they don't, file a complaint with the dept of labor, and SUE their arses!!! If you've got all the documentation, (i.e, dr's notes, travel receipts, etc) - you;ll have no problem proving your case!! (i was in the same boat - I sued, and I won)
I know right now it stinks, but YOU WILL find something better!!!! good luck!!!

I'm sorry Michi... I'm sorry you didn't get the chance to tell them where to shove it!!!
I would look into the doctor thing.. I'm not really sure about the law.. I think NY is an at-will employment state, so they can fire you whenever... did you ever have an evaluation? I think they are supposed to have some kind of warning system, or give you a chance to "improve"

AND YES I KNOW that you could definitely pursue legal action, I can do some research for you if you need me to at work tomorrow
On a brighter note, this definitely wasn't "right" for you and in a way, I hate to say it, everything does happen for a reason. I KNOW something wonderful is in store for you and you will find a much more fulfilling job down the road

Yeah.. It has happened to the best of us--think of it as fate telling you to get out of there... you were not happy there anyway, this is just forcing you to do something about it!
You can get by for a while on unemployment, but I'm sure you will find something MUCH better now!!

sorry to hear that! I'm sure you'll be much happier somewhere else after all the bs you've dealt with.
I just had a decent p/t job for 2 months and my position was supposedly cut but I know the lady in the office did not care for me and probably thought I couldn't handle the pressure. I guess by telling me my position is cut was the nicer way to tell me goodbye. I was p-i-s-s-e-d at first, but I didn't enjoy being around this person and complained everytime I came home, so I think it was a good thing that I'm gone....

I am sorry to hear this. Some people have nerve.
But when one door slams, another opens. Take this time to collect your unemployement, look for a job you will love and use this time as you time. Maybe catch up on some reading, if the weather is getting nice go to the park, all while looking for work of course but take the time to really look for something your heart will really be into.
