Work Q (need advice)

So i was approached today about being responsible for some extra stuff at work..
The extra work i like, always wanted to be doing it...
(Basically, conducting in house investigations)

Neg
1. But it would mean a change in hours (just a little). Changing my hours means also sitting in more traffic.
2. Increase is stress that is for sure, and i would be busy 24/7, lucky to get a lunch break....

Pos
There is an increase in pay but not a HUGE amount.

Being asked to do this is an honor and would most definitely look good with the bosses and possible more advancement in the future.

I tried itout today and loved it, BUT this was just a trial run....

What would you do?

Re: Work Q (need advice)

very tough decision and extremely personal at the same time.

If it were ME, I'd take the job.

BUT it's you- you're looking for a house, plan to have some babies soon, etc. All of those things are years away for me. As great of an honor this would be, I think (if I were you), I'd decline.

As far as the future of your "not-yet-conceived" child, do you think you'd be SAFER as a preggo in your current environment, whereas going into homes would pose a safety risk to you/unborn child?

Personally, I'd stay where I was. But like Shorty said, if a family is in the future, the stress isn't needed. Chat Icon

Re: Work Q (need advice)

Personally, I always look at things like this and ask myself if it will eventually lead to more advancement, even if down the line.
For example....I am the faculty adviser to the National Junior Honor Society in my school. It is extremely time consuming and has a lot of paper work involved. I earn zero extra dollars for doing it....however, when I was approached to do it, I knew that it would do two things for me: 1)look GREAT on my resume if I decide to move to a different school and 2)make it a lot easier to advance in my own school after showing I was willing to take on extra work for nothing.
Sometimes, the possibility of it opening more doors is good enough to take on the extra work. Good luck with your decision and congrats! They must know you're worth it and can handle itChat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Work Q (need advice)

If you loved it, I would do it. Yes, it's more stress, but if it's what you always wanted to do and you loved it today, then you'll figure out a way to deal with the stress.

I was faced with a very similar situation before my wedding and I took the new job and I haven't regretted a day because I love what I do now and find that even the stress is more manageable because I love the work and feel like I make a difference.

Good luck with your decision.

Jenn, if this is something you really see yourself loving then go for it.
there is a reason why they offered it to YOU and no one else.

Good luck Chica in whatever decision you make.Chat Icon

I was unsure about what to say until I read this. I think I would take it. Since they seem to want you to take on added responsibilities, I think I would choose to take it now, with a position I would like a lot, rather than later, when it might be something else you might not want to do.

It's always easier to advance and do well when you like the added responsibilities Chat Icon

Re: Work Q (need advice)

Since it seems to be something you love doing, I think I would take it if I were in your shoes. You sound like you are only skeptical on the TTC issue and the stress? Will it be much more stress than what you already deal with?

I was set to say that maybe it would be too much at the moment because your personal life has big things on the horizon.

BUT personally, I know that I am happiest and ironically LEAST stressed when things are hectic and I am super busy. I really feel most competent at those times, and good about what I am doing. Since you loved doing it, I'd say go for it. Chat Icon

And on the practical side, extra $$ is extra $$, even if it's a small amount.

Re: Work Q (need advice)

Red-

Just from the brief chatting we've done lately...I think I might decline...

You have a lot on your plate, and the last thing you wanna do is add more stress to your meal...

But if it will make you happy.... than Id say go for it!
