What's everyone's opinion about having a seperate checking account that hubby doesn't know about for a safety net?

Re: What's everyone's opinion about having a seperate checking account that hubby doesn't know about for a safety net?

We have had a joint account for 3 years, even before we were engaged or married. But we also had our own seperate accounts We always co-signed for loans for eachother so it was just easier that way to have one account together for such items. As for seperate accounts, I have one, he knows about it and it has 0.17 cents in it because I have been too lazy to close it for the last year. If he ever wanted a seperate account, as long as the $$ was divided equally it wouldnt bother me, if it was a secret that is a different story all together.

We a joint account for all our common bills and then we each have a separate account for all our own expenses (individual credit cards, clothes, hobbies, etc.)

If I found out he had a secret one, I would feel kind of hurt and betrayed - like why couldn't he tell me?? What is he doing that he needs to do this??

Like someone said - separate accounts are fine, secrets are not!!

I had one when we first got married, only thing is if you make interest off of the account you need to claim it for taxes. I told my husband before christmas because it was shopping time and told him I set up a christmas club account to take money out and when he heard how much I had socked away he was so happy for the extra cash. I wasnt trying to hide it since the money came out of our joint checking into the new checking he could easily see that if he looked at a statement.

I know I wouldnt like it if DH had one of these. I wouldnt do it.

But I do have my own checking account that part of my payroll goes in to - I call it my "allowance" for the week. I use it to lunch, gas, hair products, etc. That way I dont over spend from the other account.

I do this too and Dh doesn't really know how much is in it. If I wanted a safety net, I guess I would cut back on spending and let that amount accumulate.

I think if I were a SAHM, I might feel differently, but I am more than able to support myself and had for a long time before I met DH, so I don't really worry about having a "safety net"

As a divorce attorney, maybe I can shed some light . . . From the day you marry, all monies earned belong jointly to both of you, as does a. On the other hand, if you have an account in which you keep separate property money (i.e., money you earned before marriage, inheritances, gifts), and you don't mingle marital earnings with it, the account is yours alone.

Thanks for the info. That's exactly why I keep my savings separate. It's inheritance and I know once I comingle it (once we're married) it'll be marital property. We have no secrets though, and if we really needed itif our kids were sick, etc I'd use it. But I'm keeping it as my small security blanketgod forbid anything, or if I want to go back to school and our jont fiances won't allow it, etc

Why would anyone DH care if they had a seperate account with some " safety net" money"?
I have a seperate account ( that he thought was a great idea)

I just dont get why it would have to be a secret.

My Fh insists on it, actually. I think the verdict in this one is that it's the secrecy that's a problem

I dont think its a problem to have a savings account of your own but there is no need to keep it a secret.

I always want a little stash of my own to buy us our boat someday or something to spoil myself with.

I don't see anything wrong with having a separate account but I would tell my husband if I did.

I have a credit card in just my name but that's the only thing that we have separate. Chat Icon

Same here. Besides, if you file your taxes jointly he will notice when you list the interest income.

Ditto.
