Dog question

The dog we are thinking of adopting is getting "fixed" today. How long after that can I send him to the groomer? (he NEEDS a bath!)

I would also say about 2 weeks. You want them to heal thoroughly!

I would probably wait a couple of weeks, but they do have waterless cleaning wipes that you could use for now:

I don't have the dog - the dog is at a place where they take strays. We are thinking of adopting him - but the woman who runs the shelter will not adopt him out without being fixed first.

When my dog was fixed, it was 10 days later that the stiches came out. So I am assuming after that you can bathe him.

Or you can buy these doggie wipes to do a little cleaning.

i agree that more time and effort should be put into finding this dogs real family

As far as the nuetering goes.........
i think all dogs should be fixed (except for show dogs and studs & bitches of course)

BUT.... is this dog purebred? he COULD be a showdog and stud.........

eta: i dont mean to come off rude, but you dont really even sound like you WANT teh dog as far as what i percieved from previsou posts.

I think it is great that you want to adopt the dog you found but have you put up flyers and gone to shelters saying you found a stray? I only say this because my dog ran away last week. I am terribly heartbroken over this and have done everything I can think of to find her and I still haven't. Not really knowing how long the dog has been missing for it could have traveled pretty far by the time you found him/her. Same with my dog. Friends lost her in Mastic Beach but she could be in riverhead for all I know where I didnt put up signs. I think it truly wonderful you want to take the dog in but maybe put a found dog ad in the paper and put some signs up and let the nearest shelter know you found one and put a post up on their board. Again I am not trying to sound rude Im just trying to put the perspective of someone who's lost their pet.

whoa - down girls down!!

First off - I found this dog a week ago - I didn't want to keep it in my home since I am 7 months pregnant and didn't know the health of the dog. I kept him overnight until I could find a NO KILL shelter for him to go to.

When I finally did - I was heartbroken to give him up but I knew it was the right thing to do.

When I first found the dog, I immediately walked ALL over g-ds creation asking everyone I saw if they knew the dog or have seen him before. I also printed color fliers that I hung everywhere trying to find the owners. I called animal control - the police, posted on the net,etc...

When I finally found a SAFE home for him - I paid $150 for the medical bills so he can be fixed, have shots, and get chipped.

I am still working with the owner of the shelter in trying to find the dogs owner - I would be THRILLED if I could find them - I believe that is where the dog belongs.

IF by monday, the owner is not found - the shelter will put him up for adoption. Instead of having him go to another strange home, we are thinking of taking him in as part of our family. In addition - the fliers will still be up and if the owner claims him a week from now, a month from now - whatever I would be happy to return him to his rightful owner.

I am trying to do what is good for the dog. He is sweet and adorable and I want to KNOW he is well taken care of. The only way I can do that is by taking care of him myself. My ONLY reservation is that I am having a baby in 2 months - but every other part of me says take this dog in and give him a good life if the owners can't be found.

He is not a purebreed...it is the shelters rules that he be fixed - and if I took him in I would want him to be but that is besides the point. The point is - right now - the dog is off the streets, safe, happy and we are trying desperately to find the owners.

as far as your first ? goes.. maybe the lady gave him a bath before teh surgery.
otherwise i'd wait 2 weeks.

Having worked with shelter dogs, I don't think many of us are away of the toll it takes on these animals. It is a HORRIBLE way for a dog to be kept. I think wanting to adopt an animal, any animal, is admiral. Municipal shelters usually only put a 72 hours hold on found animals before they become eligible for adoption. A week is not a very long time but it is long enough for a family that lost their dog to have contacted the shelters and post their "missing" dog notice. Most shelters work within a network and share this information. There are several ways a responsible dog owner can protect themselves from losing their dogs...licensing them, microchipping, registering.

I didn't realize that after you adopt a dog you are going to still look for the owners..
That is very nice
