I say fair...if you are willing to knowingly risk your health then you should be willing to pay the price. Why should a smoker pay the same as a non smoker? Is that fair

Yes! If you smoke... you will incur more medical bills on average... thus you are more of a liability to the medical companies... meaning you should pay more.

I see where they are coming from but do not like where they can go. Does this mean morbidly obese people will have to pay more until they lose weight? Will women during childbearing years be charged more insurance? These are other examples of potentially higher medical costs to insurance companies that can be applied to a group of people.

Morbidly obese people I would say yes...they have many more medical bills....and I mean MORBIDLY not overweight.
Pregnancy is a temporary condition and not something one does to themselves to deteriorate their health like smoking

I understand there's a differnce, I am just saying that instituting a policy like that opens doors we dont want open, at least I don't want them open.

I agree. It still surprises me when insurance companies pay for c-sections that are medically unnecessary or epidurals when natural childbirth is an option.

No, of course I don't think they have the same effect on long term health.
I am just saying that an identifiable group of people can become pregnat and therefore could one day be subject to being charged higher premiums because of that.

If we are choosing to hurt ourselves in the long run, we should pay more. I say this because I see what happens when people who knowingly increase their risks of bad health due to the health care organizations...
Do you know that most hospitals and health insurers as well dont ever make profits? a smoker is seen twice as much in a dr's office then a hospital. The hospital loses money and the insurance is paying out wayyy too much when the insured is paying little...

this is interesting, because they have noted ( in health insuarance) that people who have multiple pregnancies are more costly then the average breast cancer patient( a very agressive cancer obviously)
The average charge by dr's and hospitals for ONE pregnancy is $75, 000 ....With complications as minimum as 10 extra dr visits or 2 extra hospital days, the cost goes to $100, 000.
We have a group we insure that employs hissidic( sp?) jews...they often have multiple children due to their relgion. 80% of the members have met their 2 million dollar lieftime insurance maxium JUST for having children.
a family of 6 will cost an insurance company 5 times as much as a cancer patient.
And Research shows that smokers actually go to the DR less then non smokers...
BUT I still think smokers should pay more..its a choice

Yes... but Viagra is used to procreate the planet. Birth control is used to achieve the opposite effect.
