hot off the press email FWD.......

E-Bay Reconsiders

Thanks for getting in touch with me to share your views regarding new services we’re considering to bring sellers and buyers of pets together. It’s clear that our members see a strong distinction between pet adoption (e.g., the kind offered by responsible local shelters and advocated by leading animal welfare organizations) and selling pets for profit, which unfortunately can be associated with behavior that’s inhumane and/or illegal. I want you to know that we at eBay.com understand and agree with this distinction.

Based on responses from members like you – including many animal welfare professionals -- we’re going to exclude commercial breeders and for-profit sale of pets from further consideration. Instead, we’ll focus the discussion on listings of available rescue animals from vetted local shelters to support responsible pet adoption.

It’s clear that we need to proceed very carefully. As our plans take shape, we’ll again ask for input from our community. In the meantime, thanks for sharing your views with us.

I guess I don't understand why people are against BUYING a pet (through ebay or other means).

Growing up, my dogs were from the SPCA. Two of them were great but one of them was PSYCHO!!

When DH and I wanted to get a puppy 3 years ago, we went to 3 shelters and they didn't have any puppies at all! So we went to a pet store and bought Brodie there. We haven't had any problems with him at all.

What's the big deal with buying a dog or cat if you have the means to and you want one?

I don't see anythign wrong with buying a dog- but I don't think there is any difference between buying one on e-bay, or craigslist or a breeder or a pet store. Its a personal choice.

I misunderstood then, because you said you would NEVER buy a pet. It's just your personal preference then?

so you are saying that reputable breeders breed dogs and sell them just for the love of the dogs??? Chat Icon I find that hard to believe when pure bread dogs got for hundreds maybe thousands of $$$$

if it was just about "bettering the lines" the dogs would be for free....IMO

yes i am saying that.

they are expensive for many reasons...
on avg fomr a rep. breeder it should cost $600

eta: of course they make some money on it--- but they dont DO IT FOR the moneyChat Icon

I call bull! Your argument is based on ONE HUGE sweeping generalization. There are breeders out there who do it for the money and I think you are niave if you believe ALL breeders due it for the line.

I think the main difference is between Ebay selling live animals and a pet store is that Ebay is an online auction site. You don't know what is being sold. I don't think there's anything wrong with responsible breeders selling their animals, but if they are responsible breeders, they won't sell on Ebay because they are choosy about who they sell to. I just think there is something wrong with selling a dog like you would concert tickets. I also don't agree with selling animals within pet stores because of the abuses but that's a different argument.

I did say that.

I wouldn't buy a pet- unless it was a seeing eye dog school drop out. But that is my choice. That is my personal preference. other people can choose to buy pets.

Agreed.

In addition- it really bugs me that the animals would be shipped like cargo. Chat Icon

Sad, but its already happening. I have visited a few breeders websites and you can order from just about anywhere and they will ship the pet to you.

And how do you know who you sell to when you meet somone. You can wear the most expensive clothes, and be mean as dirt. And you can be a shlub and treat an animal like gold.

but reputbale breeders dont need to advertise on such sites like ebay, puppyfind etc.

Why not? Breeders want to make money and this is a great way to increase thier income!
Will you lok down upon reputable breeders that would use this service?

REPUTABLE breeders dont-------- backyard breeders do

its not about $$$ for rep. beeders.. its about bettering the lines.

byb are out to get money.

so you are saying that reputable breeders breed dogs and sell them just for the love of the dogs??? Chat Icon I find that hard to believe when pure bread dogs got for hundreds maybe thousands of $$$$

EXACT thing I was going to post. I actually know some real life breeders who have told me straight from thier mouth that the money does have SOMETHING to do with it.

Not necessarily but a reputable breeder....breeds appropriately...
According some line of ethics
whichs STORES DO NOT

Some breeders do background checks and home visits. They will also make you fill out applications and get references. You don't always know who you are selling to but at least there are some safety checks.

If it is a REPUTABLE breeder...then i don't have a problem with that

BUT imo is Ebay going to check into the credentials?
Are they going to go to the person's house to make sure that the breeding is up to AKA standards?

Re: eBay to sell LIVE animals-----

i cant really argue about reputbale breeding and stuff on here because it seems like me and red are the only peopole who actually know about breeding and whatnot.

deb and everyone else who thinks breeders ONLY do it for teh money.........

i one day plan to breed. i plan to get show dogs, finish them as champions and start bettering teh lines. YES i will make a profit --- not a huge one, but it IS hard work and like wiht any job you shoudl get compensated---
but i will honestly be doing ti for the love of the breed, NOT to make fast cash. that is not how it works. i will do all proper health tests, checkrefernces make sure the proper dogs are shown and go to show homes, make sure pet quality is given pet quality prices.

it is sad that there are just so many bad breeders out there who do this to people, they just think every breeder is out to make a buck.... thats not the point of breeding. or at least why breeding started.

its a shame.,., but its how it goes...

not to mention what measures are going to be in place to ensure that the "buyers" are going to care for these animals and provide a loving home? i know it is all about the mighty dollar for MANY pet stores and puppy mills but at least (in most cases) they have the opportunity to meet the buyers.

what is going to stop the buyers from breeding (those not neutered/fixed) these animals themselves?

I couldn't agree more. It's not even the pet stores so much as where they buy their puppies from. These poor puppies are shipped like cargo in planes and about half don't make it. Right now, they aren't suppose to be shipping any puppies by planes because of the weather, so I'm wondering how they are getting here? Days and Days in the back of an unheated truck? Chat Icon
