we were in St. Pete last month and I would say about 3/4's of all waterfront property was up for sale- it was CRAZY. What's even scarier is THEY ARE STILL BUILDING- there's construction all over.
There is DEF gonna be a glut of supply over demand- DH and I were talking about checking out vacation condos next year down there.

I'm never crossing the Mason-Dixon line!
I have friends that moved to Sarasota, FL about two years ago. They thought it would be great. Well now they have a child and last time they were in NY they were talking to us about the mistake they made. Now they finanically can't come back. I think a lot of folks think they can move down south and life will be great, do research on schools, job, community profiles and you will see why LI is $$$.

wow!
A friend of mine was just about to sign the contract for a new home they were going to build when she talked to some people in the town about the schools. She has a special needs child and wanted to make sure there were programs there for her. She was not given glowing info. She decided not to buy the house.
I guess I would consider a vacation home or a rental property but personally I've never been a big fan of FL.

This isn't the truth for everyone. We did the research and thankfully, everything South made a lot more sense to us than NYC/LI ever would. Great schools, jobs, community and $$$. It's certainly dependent on where you go...a generalization like this doesn't apply to everyone.
That s*cks about your friend though.
I for one don't see myself ever going back to NY.

I would never personally move to FL, but I don't think you should make a general statement about the whole area south of the mason dixon line.

I said my friends are unhappy
and I said do research first
I wish everyone would read the entire post first, there was no generalization in there

I have been down there, and I'm not being ignorant. I just shared my story about my friends. They are unhappy and if it makes two people research the area first (which my friends didn't do school research), then my post was ok.

thanks Colleen. I though a message board was for folks to express their thoughts, not be mean. I've been on LIweddings for over two years with no one ever insulted me like that. I just wish she read my post first.

I've heard plenty of comments like them. I've also heard "I would NEVER ever live in NY because of terrorism and I don't get why anyone would live there". followed up with a look of disgust.

my brother just bought a 3 bedroom, 3.5 bath room Town house in Delray beach
1 block from the beach, and near all the new hip resturants
the guy started out at $600K- my brother got it for $455K
florida is dropping like mad- I might buy a vacation condo if the prices drop in South beach

IMO ignorance is when you make a blanket statement about an entire region of the country and say all it's schools are bad.

My brother in law hates NY and doesn't know why we continue to live here. Funny, he has been here many times, he grew up here and he still feels that way. He lives in Seattle now..very different.
