It sounds like you made the right decision. For everyone there's a "right" place. This wasn't the right palce for you. Better to recognize that than be miserable. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Everything happens for a reason, we may not know the answer now, but it shows up at some point. Good Luck, and it took courage --decompress and regroup, and then start another search for where you feel you should be.

Re: I quit

awww, you definately made the right decision. Like one of my supervisors told me when I was having a very hard time here at work (I'm not a teacher) "you should not feel as if you are being tested by God every time you walk through the doors". And, if you are miserable at your job, you will bring that misery in all other aspects of your life and you don't want to do that.

you know what is scary now....the fact that these kids will feel like they've 'won'..and their behavior will probably get worse for the next teacher that comes along!

Sorry to be the naysayer but something about that statement just rubbed me the wrong way. This whole "us against them" attitude is a major problem in classrooms today. These students who constantly act out are doing so for a reason. The hardest thing to do is to not take it personally. Once you feel they are acting this way towards YOU, you've lost control. Maybe they have horrible home lives and are seeking out attention any way they can. Maybe they have a legitimate disorder. It could be any number of reasons. The bottom line is that we are here to serve the students in whatever capacity they may need.

When a student or group of students become "out of control," is when you need to be completely giving of yourself and turn it up another notch. I have worked in a classroom with highly behavioral students and now work as a school psychologist. I know teaching is not an easy job. Some people get into it for the wrong reasons. Your first year teaching is usually really tough. But if you also thought that you'd walk into a classroom and all you would do everyday is "teach", then you've got it all wrong. These things all come with experience and learning different strategies to manage an effective classroom. Also, if students are THAT out of control behaviorally, they should not be in a regular placement. Wasn't there any support staff in the building to help manage this behavior? I know some districts are worse than others, but unfortunately these usually contain the kids who need help the most.

Wow okay sorry that was a long rant. I apologize if I came off the wrong way. It's my job to advocate for students and when a teacher is having difficulty, he or she comes to me to consult and figure out a way to solve any behavioral or academic issues. Sounds like you didn't have that support and that's really unfortunate.

oh i hear what you're saying, but rubbed the wrong way or not - imo, it's a reality. once the kid feels he's 'won', it's only a matter of time until the behavior is repeated. in THIS particular situation, D felt this wasn't the place for her. maybe she didn't have the support system in place that you speak of, and maybe " The bottom line is that we are here to serve the students in whatever capacity they may need." yes, that is true....but at what cost?? at the cost of the mental health of the teacher? i don't think so.
i understand you're a student advocate, but if there are that many issues going on in these kids lives that they're that disruptive, to the point where the teacher fears for his/her personal safety - then it not only affects them personally, but it affects their ability to teach effectively....THAT IMO is a disservice to the other students who WANT to learn. jmo

Re: I quit

Also, all teachers are different, and some teachers do thrive ont aht enviroment and would not feel unhappy and threatened, who would feel invigorated by the challenge and would be able to help those kids. Some teachers are cut out for that and some aren't. Obviously the kids aren;'t getting what they need, but it sounds like the problem is beyond the teacher's control anyway.

I know that there is much more to the job than walking in and teaching (I am the daughter of two teachers, the sister of a teacher, and a friend to many teachers) so I am not a naive fool. I am, however, not willing to risk my mental and physical health for a job. I admire you for what you do and believe that each person has his or her fit. I just have to find mine.

I disagree. It's not a reality in the least. I would say that 90 something % of the time, kids aren't acting out because they are trying to "win." It's usually due to the need for attention and negative attention is just as good as any attention. In other words, if you yell at a student or constantly reprimand him/her for something, believe it or not but they are getting something out of that and the behavior will only continue. It's up to you and the support of your building (if there is any) to come up with alternative solutions. I realize that ever situation is different. All I am saying is that there are avenues to address these issues. I always feel that once these avenues and interventions are exhausted and the class is still unmanageable, you have two issues to consider: 1) These students have legitimate psychopathology. 2) Maybe teaching isn't for you.

If you feel like your mental health or "personal safety" is in jeopardy because of classroom behavior then you're talking about a much larger issue.

In any case, D I'm glad you recognized that this wasn't for you and I wish you luck in finding happiness with your career. It DOES sound like it was a hard decision for you.

Was this an area of poverty? Did you have any means of support in your building aside from teachers? Like did the building have a psychologist, social worker, counselor, etc? Did your principal offer any help?

i never said they're "trying" to "win"...but the end result is just that. they've succeeded in alienating another teacher, and they're now 'in control', the tough kids who call the shots. this is probably whats going on in their minds.
i'm SURE some of those kids in D's former class are thinking this very thing!! "wait until the NEXT teacher comes along..we'll do the same thing to him/her too, and he/she will leave" - hence, the repeat behavior!! you said it yourself.
their REASONS for acting this way (ie home life, etc..) are a whole other set of issues!
lack of guidance/parental control at home = lack of respect.

It was a school with a new administration that basically abandoned the teachers. There was no support, I have never seen or heard of something like that before. There were guidance counselors but they could only do so much. The situation was out of control and unfortunately, it is a problem with the system. What happens in these schools is a vicious cycle.

It is good that you are passionate about your job. Hopefully, I will find that one day.

This is why the Board of Ed can't retain any good teachers. Teachers in the NYC system get treated like garbage and have little to no support.
