We were robbed yesterday! They came in through the attic
   I am still a little shakey about it, but yesterday afternoon (right about when the kids get out) our condo was robbed by the kid next door and his friends. Our condos have an open access attic space and they climbed across the attic into our unit (stupid us never put a lock on it) and took our digital camera, some money, my most recent check (stupid me, left it on the dresser), my checkbook (another stupid me), a bottle of whiskey and a bottle of pepsi (stupid kids).
Fortunately, for us (thank you God) they didn't take anything of any REAL value that couldn't be replaced. The ignored my watch on my dresser and my DH's watch on the dining room table. They seemed to look for money or generic things.
The police and detectives came last night and since the kid who lives in the unit behind us has had trouble with the law before and our superintendent from the complex met with us and the police and helped point the finger, the kid confessed and ratted out his friends too. Also, the father saw that their attic door had been opened and he had bolted his shut, so he knew his kid did it and did a sloppy job.
I feel so stupid, though, for not thinking anything of the fact that the server drawers were half open in the dining room and the linen closet was open upstairs when I came home yesterday. I blamed it on DH's negligence.
DH nailed the attic door closed and I think he spoke to a neighbor who thought the kids got him (so hard to prove when they come throught the attic) and he built walls to define his attic space so we might do that.
I am a ball of stress and would love some hugs and support. I feel so violated. I can't help but wonder how many times this could have happened and the stuff that we thought was "lost" might actually have been stolen.

OMG how awful! Did the kids return the stuff? How horrible to feel unsafe with neighbors like that.

Supposedly, the kid said the stuff was at his friend's house and the detectives went to their houses very late so we hope to hear something this evening when the detectives are on duty.

Wow...I'm so very sorry. I can't imagine something like this happening to us. Just the though makes me sick. I hope and pray that nothing else was taken and that these kids learned their lesson.

This must be a horrible thing to experience. I am glad you realized what happened, though, and can take measures to protect yourselves.
I have family members who had their house broken into while they were away - it was a neighbor's teenager that had a blowout party in the house and lots of things were stolen and things were damaged that couldn't be replaced. I think the worst part was that they too felt so violated, that it was someone they knew.

I'm so sorry that happened to you. I know the feeling-when I was young my disgusting neighbor robbed our house and it was the things like money, cassette tapes, video games, that sort of thing. But still, it was so upsetting!!!

I'm so sorry! That's terrible! I hope you at least can get some things back and the kids get punished. Actually, if you don't get the money back his father should make him work for it and pay you back.

OMG! That is terrible! and by someone you know! How awful. But you did everything right! Don't blame yourself or DH. No one could have anticipated this thief's actions. I know I leave checks and my checkbook around all the time. I never consider that someone woudl come and steal it. I hope this kid gets stuck in jail for a long time!!
