eBay to sell LIVE animals-----

this was posted on my forum-----
i think its appauling. if you are against this as well please send an email. thanks!

Ebay may get into the live pet business - this posting IS legit - it is right off of the community boards. PLEASE cross post this widely and email the woman who heads the pet supplies section - her contact info is in the posting.

PLEASE CROSS POST THIS WIDELY - it is legitimate and causing furor in the Ebay community.

Quote:
"Dear Pets Community Members-

We are hoping to launch a Live Pets Classified Format early next year. The listings would not be transactional and there would only be a listing fee. We are also looking into allowing non-profit animal shelters to list animals for adoption for free.

I would love to know what our active community members think about this new category. We are also considering Pet Services in this format as well - grooming, walking, etc..

Please feel free to reply to this thread or email me directly at [email protected]

Thanks!

to keep me from losing my mind...
why?

ebay is a business. just like regular products, you will never know how good it is until you receive the merchandise. granted its harder to see something online that is alive (a dog/cat) i say ebay is not being fair to pet stores that could be online

Poor little Max (MY BIL puppies name) could be in Florida and be a better price then Joe down the block who charges 10x more

for the same reason why i wouldn't buy a dog from a store or from just the average joe.

I had a dog from a mall store and it was PSYCHO. A lot of abuse when it comes to breeding..

So unless i can see the breeder myself and check up on its credentials, Look at the parents and where they are living...

NO DOG FOR ME

Re: eBay to sell LIVE animals-----

baby boy.......
living creatures SHOULD NOT be sold on ebay!
if ebay decided to go through with this they would lose many customers becuase it would be soooo much easier for puppymill dogs and backyard breeders to sell on there!
you see a cute pics, buy it if the price is right, then get it and cant deal with it.. it will porbably be sick. and you are not gaurenteed anything.

juist read all of teh responses on the ebay forum link and you will see why its disturbing and completely wrong.

whast next? selling mail order brides and black market babies on there?????

eta: no reputbale breeder would ever post on ebay!!!!

So is it wrong to sell a pet on Craigslist? ANd what is the difference of someone putting up signs around the neighborhood that an animal is for sale. What's the difference?

Personally, I only get animals from shelters. There are enough homeless animals that need a loving home.

buying from a pet shop IS bad.

and buying from a reptuable breeder is good.... but reputbale breeders dont need to advertise on such sites like ebay, puppyfind etc.

Why not? Breeders want to make money and this is a great way to increase thier income!
Will you lok down upon reputable breeders that would use this service?

on craigslist- I'm sure some are making a profit. Same about people putting up signs around the neighborhood.

I agree. I would never "buy" a pet, (unless it was specially trained- like a seeing eye dog school drop out). I think there are enough homeless animals that need our love.

But if you want to buy a pet, I don't see any difference between Ebay, Craigslist, Pet Store or your neighbor who is posting signs selling his pet.

so you are saying that reputable breeders breed dogs and sell them just for the love of the dogs??? Chat Icon I find that hard to believe when pure bread dogs got for hundreds maybe thousands of $$$$

if it was just about "bettering the lines" the dogs would be for free....IMO

EXACT thing I was going to post. I actually know some real life breeders who have told me straight from thier mouth that the money does have SOMETHING to do with it.

I think you are a little out there on this one. Every breeder (which granted, is not many) I know has never charged less than $1000 for a purebread. Sometimes they'll go down a few hundred- but that's still a whole lotta $$$

If that was the case, why don't breeders sell their dogs for a lot less $$$$.

Re: eBay to sell LIVE animals-----

I guess I don't understand why people are against BUYING a pet (through ebay or other means).

Growing up, my dogs were from the SPCA. Two of them were great but one of them was PSYCHO!!

When DH and I wanted to get a puppy 3 years ago, we went to 3 shelters and they didn't have any puppies at all! So we went to a pet store and bought Brodie there. We haven't had any problems with him at all.

What's the big deal with buying a dog or cat if you have the means to and you want one?

I don't see anythign wrong with buying a dog- but I don't think there is any difference between buying one on e-bay, or craigslist or a breeder or a pet store. Its a personal choice.

yes i am saying that.

they are expensive for many reasons...
on avg fomr a rep. breeder it should cost $600

eta: of course they make some money on it--- but they dont DO IT FOR the moneyChat Icon
