Societies have always placed restrictions on marriage to relatives, though the degree of prohibited relationship varies widely. In almost all societies, marriage between brothers and sisters is forbidden, with Ancient Egyptian, Hawaiian, and Inca royalty being the rare exception.

Source

As I'm sure many cultures have restricted same sex marriages for thousands of years.

The way I understand it is that the reasoning for this marriage restriction among most, if not all cultures, is because the effect this would have on potential children of such a marriage.

So my argument still stands - if the brother and sister are sterilized, why should they not be allowed to legally marry. And as the law stands right now, to the best of my knowledge, sterile or not, you cannot marry a sibling. And then it begs the question, so if we make a gay marriage legal, from which no children will be biologically produced either, why wouldn't we then allow a brother/sister, uncle/niece, etc marriage (as long as they are both sterilized)? Would we then have to make that type of marriage legal also?

I understand your point, but then you could also go the opposite direction. Should a marriage only be legal if the couple is planning on having a family?

I don't think one can really compare an incestuous relationship to a homosexual relationship. Homosexuality is part of what makes a this person up - they don't choose it. They are attracted to the same sex the way men and women are attracted to each other. Should they be denied basic civil rights because they don't find the opposite sex attractive?

No, you really can't go in the other direction because the hetero couple has a choice. A gay couple has no choice. Two men cannot biologically produce a child by themselves. If the brother & sister both choose to surgically prevent themselves from being able to procreate (tubes tied/cut etc) they are essentially in the same position as a gay couple. Also, if me and my DH are both sterile we are still allowed to marry, yet a sterile brother and sister are not.

An uncle could say the same thing about his niece. "He didn't CHOOSE to fall in love with his niece."

I'm just looking for ONE valid reason why, if we make gay marriage legal, shouldn't we also make incestuous marriages between sterile relatives also legal.

Re: Do you think the US should allow same-sex couples to get married?

If a sterile incest couple wants to marry, then so be it...my life will still go on.

I can't imagine that incest marriages would be out of control in popularity though.

I know a girl who married her cousin in Italy. She grew up here, he was there, they met while she went to see the fam and fell in love. They have a great marriage, and their 4 kids are healthy. If that floats your boat...

I understand what you are saying but the uncle is referring to ONE niece and he still have other choices should he want to marry. In the case of homosexuality and not allowing marriage, they can't marry at all unless it's the opposite sex which is not part of their makeup.

Ah, see here you are making a valid point. A legit argument... by making gay marriages illegal, they are excluding an ENTIRE GROUP of people from a civil right that other people have. And the only thing different about these people is that they are gay.

I dont think there is going to be "ONE VALID REASON" as to why an uncle shouldnt marry his neice. For now, we can say bc its incest and its not morally correct. Hey, maybe like you are suggesting one day someone like you will bring this to a court system and get it approved. Dealing with this issue at hand, Gay marriages is an issue that is trying to be legalized and I am all for legalizing it.

Here is why I don't thing sibling/incestuous marriages and same sex marriage aren't comparable:

With sibling/incestuous relationships - you are talking about a very limited number of people you are prohibited from marrying. I can only be prohibited from marrying any of my 3 brothers. However, I still have a large population of men that I can marry since I'm attacted and compatible to men.

With same sex marriages, I can't marry ANYONE if I am attracted to women. My only choose is to marry a man to which I am not attracted to nor what to build that type of commited relationship and life.

First off, the thought of having an intimate relationship with MY brother is just morally wrong and disgusting.

Yes. As I said above, this is the valid reason I was looking for. You worded it perfectly.

However, (and now I'm really going off on a tangent so feel free to ignore, sorta just thinking out loud here) I wonder if we were to lump together and "label" people who fall in love with relatives... (anything at all, call them "apples" instead of "gays") then would it be wrong to forbid them to marry? If it were to turn out to be more popular than we ever imagined... like when homosexuality was such a closeted secret... then there was an explosion of openness... what if underground there are lots of "apples" living in the closet.... crazy thought I know. That's your reason. Okay. And don't you sound just like a close-minded, anti-gay middle american? (Not saying that all of middle america is anti-gay)

Those are the exact words that people use to describe gay relationships. So why is it that your feeling that incest is disgusting is valid but someone else's feeling that homosexuality is disgusting not valid?

From what I understand, lots of states allow marriages between family members. Uncles can marry neices, 1st cousins can marry 1st cousins - From what I know, the only prohibited marriages are between full blood siblings (half siblings can marry in some states) and parents marrying biological children. So marriage between relatives isn't really limited greatly.
