Well just to give everybody a general idea, during the last months of school when I was subbing in a district on LI, I came across the salary schedule.
NOw, I do no remember every single step *obviously* but I do remember that a 1st year with Master's degree started at about 43K in this particular district.
I do not know if that helps any, but I hope so.
i realize every district is different, but one friend of mine has taught at three different districts and the pay was higher than that. she's a third year at a decent district in nassau and is making low-mid 60s, I think. HTH!

Just so you know, I work in LA and our cost of living is probably higher considering our housing costs here. The starting salary in my district is only 32,000 and 37,000 with a MA.
I am at the top of the pay scale and my salary doesn't even come close to any of those posted. It's so sad

I grew up in Pat-Med and from what I understand they are pretty well paid. I remember when I was in school they also used to send out something yearly to residents stating what teachers were making at the time. Not sure if they still do it. But i think people demanded it b/c of the tax increases.
ETA: I found this but it is from 2004.

so are these salaries guidelines or are they set in stone?
for example, just a masters, you'd start at MA STEP 1 ?

Unless you have additional teaching experience. For example, if you have taught for 2 years somewhere else you can start at MA Step 3.
But they don't have to give you the credit.

I taught for 6 years in NYC and they credited me with 3 and a half when I moved. That's why if you teach in NYC and want to move out to LI, it's better to do it sooner rather than later.

yeah, but some LI teachers top out at close to $100K - which can be more than double than the starting salary - alot of other places dont max out that high - thats the point I was trying to make -had nothing to do with cost of living - it doesnt matter were we live, his student loans cost the same

Starting salaries on LI are NOT $65,000 for teachers. you need AT least 5 yers of teaching experience and a Masters degree to get that in most districts.
