doesnt make it wrong either otherwise there would be a lot of mommies behind bars for running in the store while thier 10 yr old waited in the car.
how would you feel if something happened to your child while you were in the store?
a lot can happen in 5 minutes!!!!!!
also would you leave your pocketbook or your diamon ring in the car alone in plain sight??probably not
children are worth more than that

it Does make it wrong, in the Eyes of the NY State government, anyway...
CHILD ABUSE AND CHILD NEGLECT LAWS IN NEW YORK STATE
According to New York State laws, the state may take children away from parents who abuse or neglect them. This includes excessive physical punishment of a child or leaving a child unattended. New York State may interfere on behalf of the child in such situations.
People run red lights- just because they dont get 'caught' everytime, doesnt mean that they didnt break the law.
but I have seen a cop pull in a parking lot a few times in fact where someone was parked in the firezone, a kid was in the passenger seat and they didnt do anything. I thought for sure b/c of where they were parked they would but I guess if the kid looks old enough that they dont need to be in a car seat I dont think the cop is going to do anything
I know this cause my DH always pulls into the firezone and I wait in the car and get nervous so I always look around and never got bothered?

I don't understand why this has to be a legal debate? Who cares if you're going to get a ticket? Why leave your child alone in a car when we all know of the sick sick things that have happened to children?

Neen - I wasn't referring to your posting of the law, I was referring to the thought that if a cop doesn't ticket you for it, it must be ok.

ok, so then i made a convincing lawyer?
BTW- i checked the law books... Couldn't find one against bringing a child into the Men's room. just laws about not leaving children unattended

yes I have left my pocket book right on the passenger seat all the time in fact- hey if someone wants it that bad- they can have it I dont live in fear- just did it off myrtle ave in glendale queens and had to hear my aunt go OMG you cant do that someone will break the window for it cause we ran into a florist to put flowers on nanas grave- I told her too hey I live for me, if someone wants to break the window for the 10 minutes Im in the store picking out a wreath then so be it. Maybe I trust too much but I live a happy life that way too.

5 minutes can happen anywhere, anytime Im not going to live in the what if -

If it was her who needed to go to the bathroom then, I think it would be ok for her to run in, but DH woul be standing right outside the door...
If DH had to go, then you bet your @ss she'd go in w/ him, rather than leave her outside alone! I wouldnt even trust an attendant.... you cant trust anyone...BOTTOM LINE!
If I didnt want her to see anything, Id tell her to shut her eyes!!!!! No one is saying she has to go stand next to the urinals!

All I can say is WOW...you must live in a wonderful world. I don't live in that world, I live in the real world. A world where I don't want my bag stolen because the loss of $$$ and the aggravation of replacing all my cards and driver's license are going to be a royal pain in the a**.
Obviously nothing bad has ever happened to you and I hope nothing bad ever does. I on the other hand have had JetSki's stolen out of my driveway, a bike stolen off my truck(it was locked), and my bag stolen from my drawer at work. I know what can happen and will do whatever I can to avoid negative things in my life. Even if that means my DH has to take our daughter into the men's room at the risk of "GASP" exposing her to men peeing.

i really dont mean this as a judgement at all, but i can say that I *honestly* believe that this mentality will completely change after you have a child!
and then maybe this Random guy won't seem like he did such a 'harmful' thing to his child by not wanting to leave her unattended.

oh no dont be mislead by me NOW not living in fear- I have had MANY bad things happen to me. I have one of those coach wristlets that have my $$ and cc , license in it and that comes with me in the store- my pocketbook allthough the value of itself is not cheap its no big loss to me, meaning it wont ruin my life. as far as the car- ahhh its a lease I have glass insurance too.
I do live in the real world just as you, just view things differently doesnt make either of us right or wrong or better than the other. We are just human with different points of views and how we care to live.

youre right, I did say I dont have kids and if I felt my 10yr old was mature enough I think I would trust her for the 5 min run. as I would have to trust her when she goes out to play. but youre right I dont know for sure but I do know that as of right now I strongly disagree with a 10 yr girl going in a mens restroom. as far as the car, I dont know, I know now I am confident that again if she was mature enough I would but when the time comes I guess I will see for sure but I am open to it.

I didnt realize that my original post got so off topic but I still remain with the same answer that a 10 yr old girl does not belong in a mens room. The facts are that even if it were her father that had to use the mens room, the 12 yr old brother was still there and could have waited with her. Honestly, both 10 and 12 yr olds can go into bathrooms solo. If the father felt that she couldnt go solo then he should have waited outside the bathroom door for her to come out. I totally agree that "things can happen" but those same things can happen at schools, churches libraries. When do we make our children independent enough to use a bathroom alone? As someone said some places do have "family bathrooms" which is great in an airport or major attraction. In a movie theater like someone else said, its one way in one way out...the child will return when done. If at 10 you cant allow a child to use a bathroom alone, then its time for a full time nanny until they are 18. Its life...children need their independence at some point. Also, I dont think its "a scarring" event to go into a mens room. I think its "Inappropriate".

I wanna tell you a story...
I was 15, I worked at fun4all.... My boss (a woman) offered to give me a ride home... I was very friendly with her (and my parents trusted me)
Well apparently she had a different agenda.... took me back to her house... where her BF was naked on the couch, and they proceeded to tell me, about the 3 some they had planned! 
I got out, made a call.. and all was fine...
BUT I WANNA MAKE IT CLEAR...YOU CANT TRUST ANYONE>>NOT EVEN THE PEOPLE WORKING THERE (AN ATTENDANT) BECAUSE YOU JUST NEVER KNOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
