Ok so that time of year is approaching and I'm curious how other mommies feel about this vaccine. TIA

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

If my Dr suggests it- and says its fine- then he will get one... I fully trust my Dr- and know he wouldnt steer me wrong...

However- him and I havent discussed this yet- since last flu season DS was to small to get the vaccination...

I am not sure but leaning more towards no. I dont remember ever receiving it but I want to talk to my doctor before I make my final decision.

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

my dr pushes it- he is a big advocate for it. We gave it to Bryan last year at 6 months. I doint know if that had anything to do with it but he never got sick at all his first year- he got his first cold when he was 14 months.

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

both my kids get the flu vaccine. i love it. and so far (knock on wood), my kids have never gotten the flu. the vaccine in my eyes can only do good. you cant get the flu from the vaccine, my doc told me, because they use a "dead" form of the virus.

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

I'm honestly not sure at this point. I guess I'll wait and see how his pediatrician feels about it at his 15-month check-up.

My Ped suggested that both DH and I get the vaccine because DD is too young. I will only on his suggestion but I really don't think the vaccine is all that helpful. The flu stain mutates so often that a vaccine really give a false sense of security. Wash your hands often and it will probably help more then the vaccine.

Julia had to wait till she was 6 months last year to get it, we didn't have any problems. She will be getting it this year too, no flu in my house! DH and I are getting it also.

I voted yes this year. I just went through training to be an immunizer and learned a lot more about vaccines and while I still will never follow the CDC schedule I am more aware of what options there are for pediatric thimersol free vaccines. I will be getting it this year since I got the flu last year and it was awful and DD got it also and I felt so bad for her (although last year she was too young for the flu shot). I will make sure that she gets the single dose preservative free injection though.

I'm going to have DS get it, he'll be about 7 1/2 months when he gets it (thimerasol-free though, otherwise I would probably skip it)

My nephew ended up in the hospital needing oxygen at 6 months when his flu developed into pneumonia. That really made me realize how serious the flu is Chat Icon

I usually get it every year, so I'll probably do it again this year.

My ped suggested the same. I've never gotten the flu vaccine (even though I'm a nurse and they highly recommend itChat Icon ) nor have I ever gotten the flu but I guess I'll suck it up and get it this year because I would never forgive myself if I got DD sick.

Yes, as long as the child is over the required age of 6 months and healthy. No reason to take a chance. the flu can kill young children.

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

Jenna got it last year and knock on wood-never got even a cold all winter. I work in a hospital environment and am exposed to the flu virus routinely so I wanted my whole family to be protected.

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

i am out numbered here i guess. i would never give it to my kids. There is thimerisol in it and is not available without thimerisol until they are old enough for the flu mist which i think is at 6 years old.

I felt the same way but actually found out that is not true. I am in the process of getting certified to give immunizations so I had to take a class (kind of silly for a mom who is basically against the whole CDC schedule). There is actually a single dose syringe which is preservative (thimersol) free which is the only one I will allow my daughter to have. I usually only let her have one vaccination a month so now I have to figure out how I'm going to do this.

My old ped suggested that Andrew and everyone that is watching Andrew and of course DH and I should get it. I didn't ask the new one yet.

I am just worried that if Andrew doesn't get it the flu could kill himChat Icon I am not sure what's worseChat Icon

Re: Flu vaccine question with poll

My whole issue with the flu shot is the vaccine they produce is the strain that they guess will be out there in the coming season. They could be way off and have a different strain out there and we could get the flu and be sick as dogs even with the shot. There are hundred (maybe thousands) of strains out there. Even with the shot available we don't get it.
