tax question how much are you getting back-if you dont mind me asking

i just want to get an idea...our accountant is taking f o r e v e r
and says he thinks we're only getting back $900...doesnt sound right.
I claim 1,
my dh claims 0

and we've had a house since august, so between the interest on that and closing costs...

does this sound right? Chat Icon

Re: tax question how much are you getting back-if you dont mind me asking

Last year we bought a home and paid mortgage/taxes and wound up paying in (DH's bonuses are not taxed when he gets them). This year we're getting $3000 back, but I had $25000 in tuition that is an educational deduction (or something). Our bank interest also hurts us. Without my tuition I think we'd be about $300, with our mortgage.

Re: tax question how much are you getting back-if you dont mind me asking

I think if you put up a poll you will get more responses.

ETA: Right now we are in the peak accounting season so if your accountant is taking some time to get back to you I would understand that since we have less than one month until taxes are due. But if you had given him/her your info on February 1st then I would be very upset that he/she was taking so long to get back to you.

Re: tax question how much are you getting back-if you dont mind me asking

We got back about $2000, but we both claim zero plus I have extra taken out cuz last year we had to pay ($10 federal, $5 state per week).
We also bought our house last year, closed in September...I think we will see a bigger refund next year because we will have paid a full years taxes and mortgage payments

That *****. girlygrl33 gave me contact information for an accountant. He handled me pretty quickly... e-filed and all. I should have my refund by next week.

The process literally took a single day. I haven't even paid him yet (which I have to do). Chat Icon

I claim 1,

If you claim Married 1... thats a significant decrease in how much tax is withheld.

I went from claiming single0 to Married1.... and they are taking out quite a bit less in taxes from my paycheck. My takehome pay is a lot more now.

The $900 figure could definitely be a realistic one.

What??? I would be furious if it has taken this long. I would tell the person not to bother doing them, that you are no longer paying them for their lack of services, and find someone else to do them.

I am claiming married 0 right now. If I change to claim married 1 would I risk having to pay at the end of the year?

Re: tax question how much are you getting back-if you dont mind me asking

You really can't compare because of very different situations.

My parents only claim themselves and got back $8k this year.

My 18 year old bro got back $200.

My 20 year old college student sis got back $2500.

By claiming single 0... (even though you are married).

Claiming single 0 means they take out the maximum amount of taxes they can.

Definitely.

Here is a good calculator to see how much more you would get a paycheck.

Either you get money back at the end of the year, or you have the money in your paycheck throughout the year.

There is no 'free money'.

Better to have the money in your paycheck weekly.

Why give the feds an interest free loan???
