Re: CNN Poll: 6 in 10 blacks said race played a part in the delay of rescuing people in NO

i believe there is something i will term as Economic Racism.

while i DO believe that alot of factors played a key role in regards to the response, or lack of a 'quicker' more agressive response...(such as logisitics, the number of victims effected, and the shear magnitude of the tragedy)...I do believe that had this happened on Rodeo Drive, in Beverly Hills, the response would have been MUCH different. JMO.

oh, and I also saw a report on CNN, that the mayor of NO reportedly claimed that when survivors were trying to make their way out of the city ON FOOT via the only roadway that was passable at the time, Cops from a bordering city, in riot gear, with attack dogs, sTopped them from entering...something about not wanting their city to be negatively impacted with all the evacuees...

I agree 100% percent. It does happen and it's happened for 100's of years.

If I was living there and had to waited 5 days to get some help & water & the basics need to survive I would be prettty unhappy also. There really is no excuse for it. We're not a 3rd world country. Regardless of race. Chat Icon

I agree. But especially after the comments made by Barbara Bush (which I know were economically target comments, not racial comments) it makes you wonder. Let's face it to refer to anyone as "those people" is dangerously close to showing their brand of predjudice.

Did it affect the rescue??? who knows, I'd be more inclined to say that his good buddy Brown & his padded resume afftected the cluster mess that turned a bad storm into a horrible tragedy.

However we are not down there and we are not seeing what is goin on. Those who are claiming that race had somthing to do with it may not be assuming, it may be based on something they are seeing that we are not.

my opinion is just that, MY opinion. none of us REALLY know why or why not they were not saved sooner, so it is ridicuous to argue over a fact that none of us know the true answer to.

That was my whole point, that we can't know for sure because we weren't there.
That's all I said.

I do agree that yes along with low socio-economic statuse come and increase in minorities...but the president did do that...So to blame it on racism entirely is stupid

And i guess the boardering cities are racist too... Chat Icon

but that may not have been due to race per say

they were looting, crazy irrational people

If I had to wait for days to get water & food for my daughter I would have looted also. Because a small percentage of the population does stupid stuff the media gives it so much attention therefore giving the majority of the people there a bad rep. That's not fair.

I think, at least in terms of Bush's reaction, that it had more to do with my feeling that he does not relate to anyone who's not a wealthy white man- he has no empathy for the poor, for women, for people of other races. And the comments made by his mother speak volumes about the mindset in that family. It's ignorance, and there's a big good old boy's club thing too. JMO.

no..these were people traveling on foot, via a major roadway...a passable one....they were families with children....they were trying to get OUT and away from the madness..

and no, i didn't catch what city this was...wish i had, but i caught the interview midstream...Chat Icon

67% who lived there were black.... but what percentage of the people tehre NOW are black? it's a helluva lot more than 67% thats for sure.

all the white people had places to go, fmaily to stay with. its the black people who lived in a house with their whole entire family and have nowhere to go.

we can all fight about this, but whatever.

Jess...why do you think some were able to leave ?
And not all of them were white...

THe people who stayed WERE POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOR JESS.

all i am saying is that it is logical to want answers to why this happened

and we will never know

but people are looking for the easy answers to this when there are none there. It's easy to blame Bush, it's easy to pull the race card, but we will never know and I think it's not in our best interest to make such assumptions.

they couldnt swim so they died and floated and got stuck in trees and then the water went down. seriously sad.

also, there were 2 (white) girls from England there at th time and they had to be guarded by 15 men at hte superdome because everyone was tryingt o rape them.

this is so sad.

lets face it though, the white people there were richer. im not saying that there are NO white ppl there, of course not. but my point in my opinion is that if it were a place like HERE, say, that we wouldnt be having this problem.
i dont htink just race plays a part in it. i know economy does as well.

i dont want to argue over this anymore. its stupid. everyone has their IDEA of why it is this way. but it is a futile effort to argue over it.

i agree 100%

and it's real convenient that the people who hate Bush are bashing him over this

they'll find any reason

not saying he's right or wrong, but it's silly to bash him without fact

BUT you keep proving my point jess....that this was an issue of money....or lack there of.

Bush didn't make those people poor...but there were....
They ones that got caught up in that mess were POOR. And it is EASY to just ignorantly say oh it is a race thing...

EXACTLY....67% that is BARELY more than HALF! Chat Icon

That's not true - it's closer to 3/4 (75%) than it is to 1/2 (50%).

I think they are valid in feeling how they feel - especially since race is still a huge issue in our society - whether it's true or not, is hard to say. Chat Icon

well next time a natural disaster happens of this accord and it is all poor white people that need help and do not get it then we will know that it is entirely 100% a 'poor' thing.

i just cant accept that it is FULLY a 'poor' thing this time.

Weren't they told to stay put? What could they have done that our government wasn't doing - b/c they "couldn't"?
