When You Bought "Your" House, How Did You Know It Was THE House

DH and I are looking at houses and we've seen some we like and we could make an offer, but how do you know when it's THE house?

Re: When You Bought "Your" House, How Did You Know It Was THE House

Danielle and I looked at over 40 houses, and when we came across our house - we thought at first it was a really good price, and that we could just move in without doing any serious work. The neighborhood was great, and the block was really nice too.

We thought that something had to be wrong with the house, because we couldnt find anything decent for under $400k, until we found this house....

Re: When You Bought "Your" House, How Did You Know It Was THE House

We just kinda knew. We looked at 35 houses and only bid on this one. We just loved the area and the house has so much potential. Also, we couldn't find anything in the area we bought this house in for under $425,000. Our house needs tons of updating but even though e/t is old it's in great condition! We could see ourselves staying here permanantly. Once we add walls to the dormered attic it'll be big enough if we have kids.

I guess that was the biggest thing was that we could see ourselves staying here (thank goodness b/c I never want to move again!)

We knew it right away. We looked at about 25 houses.

We fell in love with the neighborghood, street and property. Once we saw the inside there was no way we were going to let it go.

We just knew.... it was the first house we saw that had everything we both wanted.

The big kitchen for me
The finished basement for him
hardwood floors for me
carpeted floors for him

it was definately "us"

We knew the moment we saw it. It had almost every item on our must and wish lists. The only thing we don't have is a garage, but our community plows our deeded parking spot and so it is fine.

I think DH liked it more than I did at first.

I thought it was nice, but didn't have that feeling that everyone says you will have.

However, now I couldn't imagine living anywhere else at this point. It really is the perfect house for us-size and layout-wise.

we knew that we wanted a house that needed work, we knew we wanted the neighborhood we picked (after looking at other areas for almost a year)& we wanted to be on the lake or lakeview. We looked at every house that came on the market for months-most of them in our neighborhood are very small bungelows so we tried to visualize how we'd expand. Then I found our house the second we walked in we looked around & saw that it was a complete craphole....we knew it was the oneChat Icon We made our offer before we even looked in every room.

Don't hate us...but it was teh 5th house we looked at. It was in our price range...beautiful landscaping, inground pool, finished basement...and move in condition. Friendly neighborhood. Our house was only on the market for 5 hours. 3 Couples made offers...1 asked lower than the offering price...we offered asking price...and the 3rd couple offered 5,000 more than asking price. The couple selling the house choose our offer because they still live in the nieghborhood and liked us the best.

We knew it was the one as soon as we walked in. We started talking about decorating ideas. We were so excited we didn't want to leave. We went back a week later and knew that it would be ours.

We had our house built and the same thing happened with us.

We looked at so many models and builders and after a while everything started to look the same.

The builder and model we went with after going to it for quite a bit we really started to picture our lives in the house and where things will go. When we signed all the papers I still really didnt have that feeling but when I was watching the house get built I really started to feel like wow this is ours. The more I went to the construction site the more enthusiased I was and couldnt wait to move in. When we closed on the house we had the moving truck with us. Signed the papers and went right to the house. I never wanted to leave it.

Now I couldnt imagine us anywhere else

But with improvements... we are making the house we bought OUR house. Adding a little custom touch to it.

We bought it from a close family friend. I hadn't been to it in years and when we went to go look at it to possibly buy it, I just knew that it was for us. We didn't even look at any other house. They just remodeled the entire place which sweetened the deal since all we had to do was move in!

Re: When You Bought "Your" House, How Did You Know It Was THE House

At the risk of sounding cheesy - it just felt like home. We didn't want to leave. We had two houses in the running, the one we bought and another one that would have been a better buy financially - when discussing the pros and cons of each one - the thought of not buying our house made me want to cry! So, I think when it's THE house - you just know.

Good luck with your search!!

Re: When You Bought "Your" House, How Did You Know It Was THE House

As soon as I stepped in I thought "Uh oh". Because I was immediately afraid we weren't going to get it.

There had been one house before this one that I loved too, but it was on a street right around the corner from a train station. Otherwise, I loved that house. ETA: I felt it that time too, but not as soon as I walked in.

This is so true!! We have seen so many houses and even made an offer on one (thank God the deal fell through because it wasn't the best for us) but really every house I see I'm like "I could live here"! Anything beats an apartment...and the fact that they're all new and need no work is just a plus! Chat Icon

DH is pickier and wants so many things...I'll settle as long as my "main" things are met...

Good luck!

We looked at so many houses. I actually found this one. It was the perfect size, location, price, on a dead end and in an awesome school district. It did need a ton of work but DH and Family did most of it saving us tonsChat Icon Chat Icon

FH and I looked at so many houses, our heads were spinning, but the moment we pulled up to the drive way to our house now.. I KNEW it was THE house for us...
it is not our dream house, but it is THE house for us right now, and everyday we are putting in our own touches to make it into our HOME. I am just so in love and everyday I am still in awe that I own a house! Chat Icon

WOW, this sounds eerily similar to what happened to us. We bought a fixer upper right on the lake. We knew it would be a ton of work, but having the waterview, lake rights, 3bed/2 full baths and an hour commute to NYC for DH was worth it for us.

Doris-Ann- you live in Cary? I have family there- they all had their houses built in complexes & love it!

My house is far from the perfect house or my dream house, but compared to everything in else in our price range, it was far better- bigger, updated, more property, and a great price- we couldn't pass it up!

We looked at a ton of houses and all of them had no property or garage. When we saw this house it had a lot of flat property and a 2 car garage we knew it was the one. Also it was $50,000 less then the rest of the ones we had looked at.
