Are you Jewish?

I thought your FH was and you were Catholic. If that is the case then I wouldn't wear it.

You are correct. But I believe in the unity between all faiths in general, but particularly the Abrahamic faiths. I could go into my beliefs about jesus vs. the messiah of the jews and in what ways he does and does not fulfill teh OT propehcies, but that's another post, and I'd honestly have to study up, or else talk in generalities.

But mostly, FH and I are building a rich interfaith life together. We're involved in both faiths and want our childre to be also. I'm proud of our little interfaith family, and one day when we have children, I want them to be proud also. You don't have to be one or the other, there's a unique beauty to interfaith life. Our temple is about 1/3 interfaith. Lots of little kids running around named GianCarlo Sternberg. Chat Icon

As long as it works for you thats all that matters. I HONSETLY wouldn't do it.

Just curious why wouldn't you?

Re: No flames please: Help me anticipate what kind of responses I'd get wearing something like this

I'm Jewish and DH isn't. As a Jewish person, I would never wear something with a cross. I personally wouldn't feel comfortable wearing one. At the same time, I would never expect DH to wear a star of David. I think it's nice that you want something to represent your interfaith household. I don't see a problem with it.

ETA: If you're worried about a reaction, I think you will get much less of one if you had something like the star and knot vs. star and cross.

Im not really sure. I just feel like while yes your DH is Jewish and You are Catholic that's how you were raised! And while now that you guys are together you might celebrate together You are still CATHOLIC and he is still JEWISH!

And when you have kids you both might teach them about your religions but they wont be confirmed and bar/bat mitzvahed its one or the other!

I know what you're saying, but the star and knot doesn't really represent me as fully. I mean, yeah I'm irish, but so what?

But I know what you're saying.

I don't see it as being completely mutually exclusive. Also, I feel more of a commitment and affiliation with what I am now than with what I was raised as.

Before I even met FH I took courses on Judaism and had books about kabalah and I always felt christians should be in touch with their jewish heritage. Falling in love with a jewish man made it all the more concrete for me.

I actually like the celtic knot & Star of David better, but I'm Irish, so I wear a lot of celtic jewlery (including our wedding bands).

Actually, there is a middle ground that some chose. Because my DH and I truly agree on the universality of all religions, who am I to say that I am right and he or anyone else is wrong?, which is what most organized religions do anyway... All of our beliefs are valid and we do all worship the same God with different practices. Unfortunately most organized religions are exclusive, rather than inclusive. The only one that is truly inclusive of all faiths is Unitarian Universalism,

I applaud you that you have a plan for when you have children. So many interfaith couples say they respect the other faith but when push comes to shove one faith is cast aside for the other or they don't have a plan at all and the kids are raised with no faith.

ETA: I think it's a beautiful piece of jewelry. It's no one else's business for your reasons for wearing it.

I am Jewish and DH is Catholic. it's a personal choice, but I would never wear something like that.

JMHO

ETA: just wanted to add that I would definitely not be offended by it

Personally I would not get offended by it in the least, but i think that my FMIL probably would. My FH is jewish and I am catholic. I no longer even wear a cross around her because it just draws attention to a topic that I would prefer not to discuss. I think that you shouldn't really be worried about offending anyone though because you arent going around telling anyone else what they can and can not wear.

I agree with this 100%

ETA: I want to say that while I appreciate the compliment, we don't have an exact concrete plan, and I'm sure we're going to run into a lot of bumps in the road and disagreements. But we're commited to having a loving, rich, respectful family life. We want our children to be proud of who they are

ETA #2: My FH's cousin's DH is catholic. The kids have a vague notion that daddy is catholic, but he's agreed not to talk about it or express it in front of the kdis so they don't get confused. Once his daughter came home from school saying kids told her that jesus was god, and she asked her dad about it, and he had to tell her "that's not what we believe" I admire his cimmitment to his family's decisions (in FH's family he's some kind fo hero for that sort of thing). But I would never deny my faith, nor would I ask FH to.

I think its nice... if I saw it around someone's neck I would assume that one of their parents is Jewish and one is Catholic.

I'm sure it's not, but the church is changing.

They're allowing me to have a priest and a rabbi co-officiate and bring in a chuppah. Also, ebing interfaith, we could ahve the ceremony outdoors if we wanted to.

I think its beautiful, and great that you guys have such a deep respect for each others' faith.
Reminds me of an image from a book we read in world religions in college - it talked about a stained glass window and said picture the window and the light gleaming through in different colors and the beauty of it. Now think of God as the sun that is shining through it and each of the different sections of the window as the different religions - all coming together to make one beautiful image of the almighty. (It was said a bit more elequently....)
