And they came here in search of a better life, am i right? They were lucky enough to come legally, but i'm sure if they couldn't come legally, and found alternative ways, they would of taken the chance.

Chat Icon do you know anything about Nazi Germany? how can you even compare that to any other situation?

Off topic, it is sad though that because the US did not change quota laws during that time, many desperate immigrants were turned away and died at the hands of the Nazis. There were boatloads of people turned away in NY and forced back, and they just wanted to escape from those horrorsChat Icon We did not learn the lesson and did the same to people in RwandsChat Icon

Unfortunately, genocide exists today, and many people are trapped and cannot get here legally. You need to look no further than the Sudan and Rwanda. And, yes, there are illegals here from those countries.

Asylum is granted to those escaping from those situations!

Asylum isn't always granted. But my question, why does the US have to be the country to open it's doors? Canada doesn't, Mexico doesn't, - why is it the US' responsibility to accept everyone?

because we are the country with the MOST opportunties...its a dream come true for people to live here.

Im sure if we all spent some time in Bosnia, serbia, mexico villages etc...we would all feel very differently if we were told we couldnt come back to what we KNOW.

Re: Illegal immigration debate

Ig taxes are a problem, then why not implement a system to get these people legal and paying taxes as quickly as possible. The article mentioned that they just want the opportunity to become citizens...so let them.

sorry I have to disagree. I have studied India in great depth..In certain villages a women is forced to kill her girl children. Only boys are allowed. There are many women who cannot do this and they are immediately disowned from the family with their girl chidlren and forced to live on the streets.

Their are hundreds of them currently trying to immigrate to the US and are not able to because of redtape.

The killing of the children there has been referred to in comparision to Nazi Germany by many scholars and reporters and yet they CANNOT get asylum in hardly ANY countries in this world.

THESE are the things you have to think about when discussing this topic.

you cannot be narrow minded and think simply...keep them out, serve us first... At least not if you want to truly be an ethical unselfish human being....IMO

What you describe is horrible. But how can any country, not just the US, accept tens of thousands of women and children who may not know the language, may not have any marketable skills....how do you house, feed and care for these people without draining an economy?

Can someone explain why we wouldn't want to grant asylum? I mean, they are already here, so what is so wrong with making it legal?

It is very hard to prove political asylum.
Do you think its reasonable to wait in a worn-torn country, living minute to minute, all the while patiently waiting for your paperwork to come in?
Also once the war or "conflict" is over, so is your asylum, you gotta go back..to what?

We are not the only country with ample opportunities for a better life. Canada is a wonderful place to live but I wouldn't not be able to immigrate there. Swizerland is also another country that has a wonder system set up for their citizens but, again, I wouldn't not be able to immigrate there because the respective countries aren't allowing it.

Re: Illegal immigration debate

I couldn't even imagine how overcrowded and chaotic it would be if the US had a complete open door policy for everyone who wanted to flee from their country. At what point can we say no? There are so many people who could tell horrible stories about their life in another country. Why is it our responsibility to help everyone most likely at the expense of US citizens? It probably sounds selfish, but I don't see why the US needs to be the world's police force and protector.

I dont think its tens of thousands. And for every one person who comes here, unfortunatly an american has died. There is NOT an over population is this country..only in major cities...

I dont think that everyone and their brother should be allowed in, of course not. But it has become SOOO hard for even the most desperate of cases, as I described, that I can understand WHY those would choose to come illegally to just come bottom line.

So while I agree its a crime, I would want to see a change in the laws to help facilitate the legal route and make it easier and it would help avoid the situation we are in...at least in a small part...

Re: Illegal immigration debate

I'm all for a crackdown. We need one, it's well over due. Like it has been said many times before me, so many countries have stricter policies than we do when it comes to immigration, yet the moment we want to toughen up, everyone is up in arms. Yes, we are a "melting pot". Times change. We are fighting a Revolutionary war anymore. We can't build homes every 30 yards and we aren't driving around in horse and buggy's. This country needs to change with the times. Sorry if that means you can't be willing to accept every person who needs a handout, but sometimes you have to turn people away. These people are coming in illegally.

We can't even take care of ourselves, yet we are always so willing to take care of others.

Us not being able to help ourselves is a much broader problem, and I think it has less to do with illegal immigration than poor prioritization by the govt, tax breaks for the wealthy and "helping" the people of Iraq.

The biggest problem with proverty is the working poor in this country. They work and earn wages that a below the poverty line. Employers don't "have" to pay them higher salaries because they have other workers ready and willing to fill those positions...such as illegal immigrants. Tax breaks and the cost of war, although the cost of Iraq is astronomical, aren't the reason for the poor in this country.

Agreed completly...

but are you ( governemnt) helping ANYONE?

Of course not everyone can be helped...but clear guidlines to make the country a more open place to those in need WOULD solve the problem, but there are those who think NO ONE should get the help and thats what perpetuates the issue.

I have to say Im not even wanting to continue with my points...because they seem to not be understood. I agree with what so many of you are saying that we cant help everyone, but the basic human in me is truly appalled at the blind eye so many of you are turning . I dont think some of you understand the true LUCK of what you were born into , because if you did you would be saddened by this as well. Or seen the true horror that some people escape.

I would share my land with anyone in need, american or not. thats compassion not political beliefs.

Thinking in terms of what I can do to help my fellow american versus my fellow human to me is exactly what caused this issue.

If we spent our money on helping these people, they would stay where they live versus coming here. Why should we? Because WE CAN.....simple as that. Why should we help ANYONE in their time of need...because WE CAN, I would hate to think there are people who wouldnt in this world...

An example... 100 billion dollars is spent on failed Nasa projects no one even knows about, yet we could save tens of thousands of lives instead....actually make the world not just OUR country a better place to live.

Thats my opinion and I guess I do wish more believed as I do...although I respect you all in your own beliefs.

I don't think it's the illegal workers that are keeping the wages down. If anything- big business lobby groups do more of that.

It's the principle of supply and demand. If there is a supply of worker willing to work for $7.00 an hour, the employer has no incentive to pay the current worker $9.00 an hour. There are unskilled jobs and can be performed by most. As long as there is a supply of worker willing to work for lower wages, there is no "demand" of the company to pay higher wages.

you cannot be narrow minded and think simply...keep them out, serve us first... At least not if you want to truly be an ethical unselfish human being....IMO

It's too bad that we can't help everyone, but we can't. When you try to help everyone, in the end I think no one benefits.

As a human being my heart goes out to each and every person that struggles every day in their country. Whether suffering from poverty, hunger, war, etc. I truly do feel sorry for them. I do feel blessed for knowing that I live in this country.

I do understand your statement where our government needs to be refocusing how they allocate their funds (Nasa vs. saving lives) and I do agree with you.

However, this goes back to the statement of not being able to save others without saving ourselves first. This country has put its head so far ups its asss and doesn't know whether it is coming or going on so many political issues (whether health care, WAR, etc.) that we need to really come back to home base, start taking care of our needs, focus on the issues within this country and then, maybe then we can start "saving the world".

How can a country that is so corrupt and so disheveled within itself think that is capable of being able to take care of others. If I am sick I can't take care of another person, so can a sick country take care of another sick country?
