Meaghan -- I think for some of us we just see it as a put down or an attack -- because we hear it so often. And for me it's like saying that the NYPD or NYFD doesn't work hard enough -- or something like that.
The stuff we go through on a daily basis, it is HARD on an physical level but even more an Emotional level.
So when people start to say anything that even remotely sounds like bashing -- the boxing gloves go ON!
put those dukes up! 
eta: what got me started was that a quote of mine was copied - but only part of the sentence was shown which made my comment sound completely different.

im glad you got a teaching job on LI and you ddint know anyone, but unfortunately anyone else I know that has their job on LI knew someone in the SD....just my experience.
Sorry I teach on Long Island and didn't know a soul in my district. Crap didn't even know how to get to it until I interviewed there. I worked my azz off to get in there and 11 years later I still work my azz off to be a respected teacher!!

You are saying that you are upset that the OP is complaining about going about to school after a summer vacation... isn't this a forum where we are allowed to complain and whine about things if we want to just to get it out of our system?
In addition to my teaching job during the day, i used to work nights and sometimes sat & sundays... should i get mad at people when they complain about it being sunday and having to go back to work the next day when i used to not even get sundays off?? No way... it is my choice to work those weekends because i needed the extra money... DH has spent the entire summer teaching summer school... does he get jelous that i decided to not teach summer school or work camp and stayed home? yes... but does he tell me that i have no right to complain that summer is almost over... no way...
it is only natural for someone to not want to return to work after ANY vacation, whether it be a one day vacation or a one week vacation or a one year vacation.
and also, i worked my A$$ off as well for my LI teaching job... i didn't know anyone and wasn't "connected" to get my job either
THis was exactly my point to begin with.!

I used to commute into NYC to work before i became a teacher and from my experience teaching is MUCH more stressful then working in the business world. Try taking a class of 25 5 year olds just after lunch when they are wild and crazy and getting them to calm down in order to teach them something... as a teacher if the wrong thing ever slips out of your mouth, you could effect a child for the rest of their life... when you go home at night, you dont just leave your job at the door with teaching, it follows you where ever you go... so even though i might be physically in my school building for 40 hours a week, 180 days of the year that doesnt mean that im not working much more than that for the full year. I am constantly re doing lesson plans, organzing, planning, grading and much more...i even dream about it...

I am going to 100% disagree with this!! As I previously said, I worked for one of the "Big" accounting firms for over a decade in NYC. Sorry, but teaching is 10000x harder than accounting ever was! I have to wonder what your friends did in the business world if they think teaching is easier.
Plus, let's talk about the fact that even with 2 Master's degrees I make HALF of what I made in accounting. In accounting I never, ever had to lay out a dime of my own money for anything. I easily spend $1k to $2k a year on school stuff (not including the classes that I am REQUIRED to take if I want a decent raise).

I just wanted to say, I do love my job (most of the time ) and honestly, I really couldn't see myself doing anything but teaching, but as Melissa said, so much energy is put into trying to defend teaching as a profession since it's so disrespected by many (I'm not saying you) you just get to a point where you have to fight back anytime anyone says something negative about it... I've heard it all, I make so much money, I only work 9-3 10 months out of the year, I spent my entire college experience coloring, etc. It gets old after a while.

ok gals, im going to bed. enjoy your freedom until labor day. i hope i didnt piss off anyone too much - i agree that you are underpaid and overworked - but you do get a nice amount of vacation time to try to balance it (even though it doesnt!)
eta: on a final note - can we agree that working in general SUKS!!!!!

Or maybe you had one of those AMAZING teachable moments and 3/4 of the class ACTUALLY got what you've been trying to teach them for months..
but you're 7 minutes off schedule---so you get a warning, or in some cases with extremely bizznatchy admins...you get written up...
and now you can't contest it. it stays in your file and all you can do is write a rebutal, but it'll always be there...
oh the joys...i don't even remember my point of this post....just thinking about those happy times. Thank G-D I haven't had to go through that one...but I know plenty of people who have!

AND people dont realize that we only get paid 10 months out of the yr. we dont get paid for not working in the summer However some of us choose to extend our pay to have it throughout the yr.
Thank goodness I was not on when all of this transpired because I probably would have gotten banned. I am so tired of the nasty, ignorant people that undermine our job.

Me too! I feel SO lucky to have administrators in my school who let us teach and don't hold us to Region ridiculousness!
This was my FIRST summer off since becoming a teacher in 1996, and you bet your azz I am going to whine a little about having to go back to work.

OK, well I am going to put my two cents in here.
I taught for three years. They were the most stressful three years of my life. If I didn't have the time off, I think I would have gone crazy. Now, I am in corporate America. I get two weeks off a year and three personal days.
I was just saying to DH the other day how a lot of teachers on LIF and LIW are complaining how the summer is almost over and I told him I remember that feeling. Once Augusts started, I felt the dread for the beginning of school. I wouldn't take that back for anything now.
I think teachers deserve their time off... however I am not sure about the pay... I think I was being paid pretty fairly when I was teaching as a base salary. What teachers should get is compensation for the extra time of grading papers, setting up lesson plans and all the money spent out of their own pockets.
Where I am now, I am making less money than I would have been if I was entering my fifth year of teaching this september. I pay more for my benefits, and I do not have a retirement system.
No, I do not get christmas bonuses, or a bonus of any sort. My company is on a raise freeze until Jan. of 2008. Yet, when my mom asked me yesterday would I ever go back to teaching, my answer was a flat out "no".
Teachers definitely have it hard. But so does everyone else that works. I can understand the jealousy of those who have never been a teacher. But believe me, you have no right saying teachers don't deserve this or that until you have spent time in a classroom behind the teacher's desk.

I was a teacher for almost 7 years before I left that profession for my current "profession" of SAHM. I have read this thread from beginning to end and agree whole-heartedly with the ladies that "defend" that age-old dispute of the worthiness of teachers. My DH has a high powered job in corporate America. Yes...he works long hours and commutes into Manhattan every day, but he is monetarily compensated for it. When I was teaching, he would ALWAYS say that my job was harder than his (and his job is pretty difficult and important). This is what he witnessed when I taught:
*SPending at least $500 every August of my own money...over and above what "Teacher's Choice" was allotted to me.
*Lesson plans every night. Sometimes spending 3 hours per weekend preparing.
*Grading tests, report cards, essays, reports, writing samples, homework...at home on my "own" time.
*Preparing projects (I taught 2nd grade)
*Writing my school plays and working on choreography...for MONTHS at a time. Plays were BIG in my school.
*Writing my thesis and working on my Master's
*Taking my 30 above classes
*Going to countless workshops and seminars....sometimes on the weekend
The work never stopped. I also taught summer school EVERY summer (my own choice). I loved teaching, but it's not for the weak of heart or for anybody who is even a TINY bit lazy.
Being a SAHM of 2 is no easy feat either. I'm glad I have my teacher's background. It's helped me be a better mommy!
