Thoughts, Suggestions, Advice and/or comfort welcome 5/12 update

So, since the frist week of Feb I have been having a very odd thing happening to me. I have talked to multiple doctors about it and no one seems to know what it is and no one seems to have ever heard of anything like it before. I thought I would turn to my ladies here, you guys know everything!

I have this pressure that is behind my eye, it hurts almost all the time. It reallyl stinks and it effects my job! Chat Icon
Anyway, at the most random times it seems to pressure a nerve which causes the left side of my face to throb and go numb. The area affected is to the side of my nose, my check, my lip, my gum and the roof of my mouth. Only the left though.
The only way I can describe to others how it feels is to ask anyone who has ever gotten any kind of major dental work done to remember the feeling when the novacain started to go away so your mouth is still numb but you can feel the throbbing pain of the work.
Chat Icon This happens during work and during the night when I am trying to sleep. When it happens it usually lasts for about 40 minutes and sometimes happens multiple times in a row. For instance last night I was sleeping, woke up at about 130 with the pain and was up with it until a little after 2a. I fell asleep again and was up at 2:45 until 330...fell asleep and was up again at 515 Chat Icon it stinks! I can't figure out how to make it stop and I can't take anything for it.

Has anyone EVER heard of anything like this?

Update 3/27/2006
Went to the neuro opthamologist today and didn't receive many answers. He let me know the pain MIGHT be because of dry eye syndrome so he put a clog in the hole in my eyelid where your tears drain from. Now I wait for a referral to go and visit an ENT doctor.
I hate still not having answers and knowing I still will live in such pain and discomfort. Chat Icon

5/11 Update
FINALLY! I have FINALLY been diagnosed with something. Man it feels good to have a doctor finally believe you and to know that I am NOT crazy (ok ok, it took Darren calling the doctors office and demanding some stuff, but they finally looked at the x-ray and got back to me). Anyway it seems I have some polyps/cysts that are lining the left side of my face and THAT is what is causing all these problems.
I have to go in tomorrow and see what we can do about all of it. Its just nice to know that this is not all in my head!

5/12 update
I went in today and they put a scope upmy nose to check some stuff out. Gave me some new pills to take as well as a steriod spray. I go back in two weeks to see if its working. I REALLLLLY hope it does.
Thank you to everyone who has offered support and/or advice about this over the past few months, I really do appreciate it.

Sounds like your sinuses to me. Did you go to an ENT? Hope you feel better soon!

See an ENT. You can have sinus pressure from the hormones even if you do not have congestion. Feel Better. Chat Icon

It could possible be migraine pain. An entire side of my body would go numb when I’d suffer with them yet the throbbing of the headache was still there. I don’t know if you have unbearable headaches from it, but it could be a possibility. A nerve may be inflamed thereby causing pressure on all else behind your eye. Numbness is a classic sign of a migraine, its just what jumped into my head.

Feel better and go and get a cat scan if you haven’t already!

I dont have a headache with it but I refuse to rule anything out now.
I wonder if I should go to an ENT doc or an eye doc since I can feel the nerve that hurts behind my upper eye.

Re: Thoughts, Suggestions, Advice and/or comfort welcome

You did have a bad sinus infection so this could be residual...It takes a long time for those things to finally completly go away.

BUT, that said, I would go for a Cat scan. If your out of the first trimester its ok. I had an MRI when I was PG the first time at 18 weeks. They will put a heavy thing over your stomach so its protected from the radiation.

I had something kinda similair. It started as a pain behind my eye, and it was all this pressure. They would see something when they looked into my eye so they ordered the cat scan to make sure it wasnt a tumor pressing on my eye.

It ended up being the blood vessel was enlarged. The "reasoning" was blood flow increases during PG and sometimes a blood vessel will smell to a very abnormal size.

I have no clue if thats anything like whats happening to you, but maybe asking the DR could help?

I had a bad bad headache the entire time...

Its a possibility a blood vessel is pressing on a facial nerve and causing the numbness....asl the Dr...see if they can rule that out.

Bottom line is dont ignore it. You shouldnt have to. I truly dont think its anything serious, but you are PG , you shouldnt have to suffer wondering whats going on. Thats too emotional. Keep bugging the DRs till they figure it out and fix it!

Do you still have your wisdom teeth on that side? It could definately be that, as I suffered similar problems.

people who i have known to experience types of facial paralysis have attributed it to bell's palsy. their cases sound much more severe than yours, but something you may want to read up on for informational purposes as it does pertain to nerve trauma.

This is one thing that they have tested me for and one of the few things they have been able to rule out.

I don't, I had all my wisdom teeth removed about 3 years ago.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions, I am taking every one of them seriously and I am going to try to get in to both an eye doc and an ENT doc.
I cant keep on like this for another 4 months. I am exhuasted and overwhelmed and in pain. I cry about it pretty much on a daily basis.

I remember seeing her and her left eye would blink slower than her right. It freaked her out! I just e-mailed my sister, so I'll let you know what she says. Chat Icon

I am sorry to hear that you are not feeling well but I too have problems with one of my eyes - and I have to see a retina specialist as my thing is pretty rare. If you are interested, please let me know and I will give you his info. He is really top notch and came recommended from one of the top retina specialists in the U.S.!!! He has an office in NYC and Forest Hills.

Re: Thoughts, Suggestions, Advice and/or comfort welcome

Random thing I just learned:

optometrist and opthamologist are two different docs!

One is covered under health insurance and one is covered under vision insurance.
Chat Icon I had no clue

ETA- My doc gave me a referal for an opthamologist and wants me to start there.
If that doc can find nothing then she will refer me to an ENT doc.
HOPEFULLY I can figure out what this is....otherwise it can be a LOOONNNGGGGG few months.

Optometrist = glasses, contacts
Opthamologist = eye care

You need opthamologist.

Thanks Ladies. The earliest appointment I could get was Monday morning at 8:30am. I didn't realize but my docotor referred me specifically to a doctor that specializes in Neuro-Opthalmogy
Keep your fingers crossed that he can help me!
