i do find it quite interesting about the plane crash and certain people being on it and being on the island as something destined...
It is odd that Ekko would be on a plane that crashes on the island that they drug plane crashed...
Do we think that the drug plane crashing was destined as well? Isn't odd that, that plane crashed as well?

I think he was just taking his brothers body in the plane to act like he was still going along with Ecko....but then kicked Ecko out because he wanted all the loot from the heroin deal for himself

People are saying on the lost boards that their wasa face in the black smoke when the monster confronted Ecko.
Some say it was his brother, and other says it was the old man that Ecko shot when he was a kid.
They say he was staring at it the whole time

ok i am watching regis and kelly and they showed the clip of the black smoke on there and kelly said that what she thinks it is
purgurtory  i mean echo does not have a soul and he was a guy who shotr a old man well that was to protect hisa brother than he went and hid heroine in st mary statues so maybe it is purgurtory. we shall find out. regis said he is disappointed because he wanted it be a dinosuar or something down that line. but why would locke see it than if it is purgurtory or smething down that line of it????

I meant it in the same way that Ecko saved his brother... by "taking the bullet" in saving him from living the life of a thug.
But you bring a good point... Ecko was destined to be on that island regardless of what plane he arrived in... but WHY!??hmmmmmmmmmmm!

I saw several faces in that black smoke- It may have been the sins of his past. It also may be a symbol of death (and those who died).
I don't think that Ecko doesn't have a soul. I think he did what he did to protect his brother from becoming a murderer. He didn't seem to enjoy it nor did he do it out of anger. After that, he followed a bad path, where he became cold and cruel.
My theory is that after the plane left (with his brother) he became a rightous man and the local priest and that is why he writes the scriptures on his stick- to remind him.
The only reason I could think of that the goons would take his brother and not him is that his brother was shot (dead?) and they didn't want Echo giving them any problems over that. Not a great theory- but I think the writers were trying to show how, as young Ecko did years ago, his brother made a sacrafice and took Ecko's place with the goons so that Ecko could lead a rightious life.

Sorry Im joining the conversation so late. I dont know what to make of the black smoke. I like the whole shadow of death theory, but the sounds it was making makes me hesistate. As it confronted Ekko, it make computing sounds as if it were scanning him. To me, the black smoke came across as reading his thoughts which would explain the pictures of past memories that flashed before him. As someone mentioned before, because he is at peace with his himself, he was not afraid to be confronted with his past.
Another theory which is the total opposite of what I just mentioned above is that in a metaphysical way, the smoke was his brother. His brother may have suffered from the gunshot on the plane and then passed away as the plane crashed. This may have caused his spirit (among other spirits) to somehow bond with the island and merge with "the monster". When the smoke confronted ekko, it might have been flashing memories of his own thoughts(the brother), and might have seen that Ekko has since taken over his brothers path in life and has forgiven him. I know that's far fetched, but ya never know.
I've liked Ekko since he was introduced, but now Im certain that he is my favorite character!!
