Well To be honest the next poster kind of ripped into her thus making her defensive .. but I think Her Saying LI girl meant or was implying she is not street savy why would she be that, it seems she lives a sheletered life but in no way do I think she was speaking about race but more less the crime factor. I have been on 168th street it scared the christ out of me ... it is a little rough .IMO but I wouldn't descriminate going if I had to or my friend lived there. And I have also been on the reverse side there and have been called deragatory racial slurs so I think more a less it's a matter of what you are comfprtable with!
IMO, when discussing being afraid to go to Harlem it is only natural for people to assume that race is part of the issue. It is a fact that Harlem is a prodomianately African American area. Where as it is a rumor that Harlem is the part of the city where gangs roam the streets shooting at people and the homeless crowd the area. There are areas of Harlem that are rough, but there are areas of Chelsea, the West Villiage, the East Village etc. that are rough. Harlem just has a bad rap and I wish more people would give it a chance.
Just FYI, 168 Street is Washington Heights not Harlem.
I understand 168th is washington heights no difference really and it isn't prodominately African american .. so i am not sure where you are getting that from, the movies ??? give it a chance ok I will when I see changes not (race trust me I have multiple nationalities in my family as well as soon to be in laws) but changes There is no way in Heck most of US will walk down the street at 3 AM ..I would love to see it, just like I wouldn't walk down parts of queens by myself at 3am I am not gpoing to be there either,

When I lived in Harlem there was a group of older gentlemen that sat in their lawn chairs on the street. Everytime I would walk by them to go to the train they would tell me how lovely I looked. Not in a sleazy way, just "You sure look pretty miss." Much better then when I would get off the train in the theatre district and hear what great t!ts I have!!!!

Why are we bashing this girl because she is afraid, I mean people are afraid of a lot of things.. do we bash them no.. so why this because there is a possible factor that it could be because of race .. it has been her experience there who are we to judge?

really? cuz whwn im visitng on LI i DO!
although its more common in the city due to the fact that LI is full of ppl driving in their cars while the city is mostly everybody walking.
not a day goes by when someone doesnt say something to me.

Well, I am speaking of census reports not what I have seen in the movies. I am also speaking as someone who lived in Harlem. Washington Heights is different in that is is prodominately Dominican in population. How do I know, I live there currently.

True. For those of us that live in the city it is very definate where what area ends and another begins, but if don't live in NYC I think it all just gets jumbled together.

I think some people are missing the point as I had stated earlier and unbelievable keeps bringing up. This OP was not as bad as you think. The second person is EXACTLY what started the controversy followed by other people attacking her based on the first persons response. Lolita, I think it would have been great for you to nicely educate her however your strategy might have been. I think thats what she was looking for more or less. I think some of her wording was indeed off but her nastiness stemmed from poster #2.

It didn't seem like she knew harlem well enough to even know what the area was like where she was going. She seemed to just have a vague idea of what "HARLEM" looks like. Also, we were saying wash heights v harlem, so I said what difference does it make, where it is, it's the attitude.

Folks...I think you're honestly wasting your breath, finger-typing energy, and sentiments on this person....and through this thread...
It's only causing hostility among people here...and goes back to what I said earlier in this post....she probably did it to get an edge out of folks and start drama.
Race (and that's what I'm seeing through her post) is a huge topic up for debate, along with Politics, and Religion....people do their best to stay clear of those topics b/c they tend to get heated...this girl/poster probably had that intenion!
Soooo...let's hug it out b!tch! LOL
