DH and I have it easy with our parents. Since DH and his family were all born in Poland, he calls his parents Mama and Tata. So I call them Mama and Tata and he calls my parents Mom and Dad and neither of us feels as though we are calling our IL's the same thing we call our own parents.

It will work this way for our future children and what they will call their grandparents.

I could never call my MIL mom...I call her by her first name.

I would've like to but I no longer feel close enough to them to do it and they never really made me feel like it would've been okay. FH doesnt call my mom anything he finds away to start a sentence without it

nope, in fact I try to avoid calling them by any name...it's awkward

In cards I'll write Mom and Dad but fortunatly I haven't had to call them that to their face. My husband LOVES calling my parents Mom and Dad. I think it's so cute

No I call MIL by her first name. She didn't give birth to me or raise me so she's not my mom.
My SIL (brother's wife) started calling my parents mom&dad before they were even engaged which I found a little strange.

Oh Lord, no. Call them by their first names and that's only because I was like 23 when I met them. Had I been younger, I'd call them Mr. and Mrs.

Nope. Never.

I used to call them by their first names ( for some reason this was ALOT harder with my FIL then my MIL for some reason)
Now that we have a child I call then Nonno and Nonna ( grandma and grandpa)

My MIL and I had an indirect fight over this.

My ex-SIL started calling them Mom and Dad RIGHT when her and my BIL got engaged. I found that really strange, as I didn't call them anything at that point. So I figure we're all adults, and I'll call them by their first names. Also, my FIL said I could call him by his first name. So I call her her first name at some dinner we're having with some of their friends.

So there's some fight or another between DH and MIL, and she says to him that she finds it disrespectful that I called her by her first name. So i get this out of him, and I am PISSED. Because 1) his father said I could, I assumed it was for both of them, and 2) My SIL, who's know them a week or something, calls them Mom and Dad, and I've never been invited to do that. I thought it had something to do with me being black, honestly.

So me and MIL have a conversation the next day, and she says that she wants me to call them Mom and Dad. that's what she called her inlaws, and for her it's a respect thing. I tell her that I didn't know if I could do that, since I thought it would be kind of familiar. So we worked it out and I call them Mom and Dad now.

I call my parents Mommy and Daddy, so it's not a problem.

Nope. Can't bring myself to do it. I call them by their first names. I actually try to not call them anything. The whole thing is awkward IMO.

No. It just doesn't feel right to me. My DH sometimes calls my mother Mom though and she eats it up. I've never heard him call my father Dad but I don't know if DH would feel comfortable enough to do so - my dad is VERY serious - def. not the warm fuzzy type.

they told me to but it feels too weird. so i try to avoid it at all costs to call them anything, meaning i feel weird saying mom/dad or mil's name/fil's name. basicallly, i say 'ummm...hey i found what you needed!"

I feel the same way....although I can think of some alternatives to call my MIL.

no we both call our in laws by their first names.

I do and Dh does too.

We both know who our "Birth parents" are - but calling them mom and dad has come more naturally "with time" - but it has always been a sign of respect in my family and circle of friends to call your SO's parents mom and dad.....maybe more so because our parents have been so great to us.

Its probably a real old school thing - because i don't hear many people doing it anymore...
