Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I think it's something everyone should do, but to each it's own. DH lived at home when we met and I encouraged him to live on his own. At the time we weren't talking marriage, but I just thought it was an experience he should have. He said that he is definitely happy he did live on his own before we lived together.
I encourange my younger brothers and cousins who still live at home to live on their own for at least a year. It's very different living at home, while making a FT salary vs. living on your own.

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
does college count? if not, we both went straight from parents to living together and neither of us had any problems and/or regret anything!
if you're afraid of how things will be, just make sure where you live has enough room that you can get away from each other and have some alone time.

Sometimes I regret never having the chance to live alone but I think it was more important to live with DH before we were married then it was to live alone.
[/QUOTe I completely agree!

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I am extremely independent, so I never regretted that I went from living with my parents to living with JT. I didn't feel the need to live on my own. However, I can see the appeal for some people.

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I liked that I lived on my own. Don't get me wrong the rent-free parent deal was terrific, but I liked being able not have to explain my whereabouts or when I was coming back. At my parents I was always able to roll in at 4am, but in the back of my mind I knew my parents were home & wondering if I was coming in. Of course, once the naked landlord thing happened, I had to find another place to live.
I think it depends on your situation living at home as to whether or not it would make a difference for you. I know someone whose parents were completely overbearing. She went straight from their house to living with her husband. She's never had to stand on her own two feet - and I think it effects her self esteem.

No. I dont think I would have liked living alone. I am the type of person that just needs to be around people alot. It wouldnt have worked out for me.

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
do you mean alone or on your own?
i havent lived with my parents since high school. i went straight from college to an apartment share
i never had the apartment to myself but i certainly lived on my own.
it was definitely a great experience having an apartment with my friends
i do think that having this experience made me more independant and made the transition to living with dh a little easier

Totally agree, however, in the way I lived with parents, i was very much on my own. I worked all through college, 2jobs, took care of all my sh!t, paid all my bills, did my own things, etc. Plus, at that point, my parents were spending a lot of their time at their summer home (now their home-home) so I was very independent and on my own.

No regrets here, but when I moved in with my DH (then boyfriend), he was in Asia for 2 weeks out of every month for the first year and when he was "home" (as in the states), he was traveling domestically...so I was basically living alone in the apartment/cottage.
I had the best of both worlds: a wonderful man, a beautiful cottage and time to hang/party with the girls.

No, I was fine not living alone. My dh used to work nights when we first got married so there was no one home everynight and I hated it. Now, I WISH I had that much quiet!!

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I was always rather independent. I was a sleepaway camp kid and I went away to college never really getting homesick and missing my family. I also loved living alone. I crave the time by myself. I still have 2-3 hours a day by myself before DH comes home from work and that is MY TIME. I think if I would have lived with my family until I got married, someone would have gotten hurt.

I think living alone is extremely important before getting married. There's nothing like being on your own...becoming independent, IMO.
DH never lived alone and I regret it for him...it would have made things *much* easier on us.
I agree-I lived on my own for 2 years before moving in with DH. I think it was very important.

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I went away to college, and moved back home and lived with my parents (rent free). I have no regrets. I would never want to live completely by myself, it is not my personality. I loved living with friends in college, and also loved living rent free with my family. And now, I love living with my husband! The first few months were tough with a lot of compromise necessary, but things are great now. I think it is a personal decision so do what's best for you!
Good luck!

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I lived on my own for 3 years and I used to sleep all sprawled out, smack dab in the middle of my queen size bed. I loved living alone and in some ways the change to being married and living together was harder. (It look months for me to be able to fall asleep because I wasn't used to sharing the bed.) However, at other times it was a little lonely. I love having someone to come home to and I love sharing my life with my DH. Now I can't image living without him. I don't think it really matters if you live on your own before your married.

yes i would like to live alone first before even thinking about moving in with my SO just that you have your time for yourself and have things the way you want them and can kick your SO out when he gets on your nerves at times and not have to put up with his BS

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
i went away to college and for part of that time, i had my own room, so that was my "alone" time
when i came home, i lived with my parents - saved alot of money on rent and food and stuff.
Didn't move in with boosh till we were legal

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
i had alot of time living somewhat alone in college - it was fun, but i was excited to live with DH when we got married.
i knew we would be great living together, and it was an easy transition for us.

Re: If you went right from living with parents to moving in with SO/getting married
I don't regret it at all. We were at the point where we were seeing eachother every single day, so we were practically "living together" anyway. It was tough at first making the transition, but it went pretty smoothly for us.
