We are not doing this either. I did a lot of research on this and felt that it was too expensive and too new (among other reasons). And while it does only cost about $120 per year on average the initial payment can range from $1,500-2,000.

I asked DH to do his own research and come to his own decision and he agreed with mine.

Re: Cord Blood Banking...

When I was looking into this we decided to donate as IF we ever needed a match, it would be easy to get back...and if not, we might help save someone else's life. It was my understanding that getting from a bank is just as good if not better than storing your "own".

I went through this too. My hosptial did not have a public bank, but I found 2 private banks that would pick up from my hospital. Cryocell (or Cryobank) and Elie Katz Community Blood Cord Service (whihc we went through).

I also did extensive research and spoke to a few friends who are doctors. A month before Jordana was born, my friend- whose husband is a doctor, had a baby. They decided to donate the cord blood also. He said there were serveral scandals with some of the private banks (not getting enough to use and still charging the customer, after the blackout when all the samples were ruined, still charging, etc...)

We ended up donating it and are happy with our decision.

We did have to pay our doctor for the process, but I don't know anyone else who had to.

Re: Cord Blood Banking...

I have 2 $250 coupons from CBR if anyone is interested. I can't tell you how happy I am that I did it. I will never have to regret anything. I pay way more for car insurance than I do for this, which I hopefully never have to use either.

from what I have heard Manhasset has a donation service.
