A doppler is a device that amplifies the sounds in your womb allowing you to hear a tender heartbeat of a little one as early as 8-9weeks.

Does anyone know when the old wives tale about the babies heart rate kicks in? The heartrate last night was between 162 and 169
Does that tell me anything?

The old wives tale is a fast heartbeat is a girl, a slower one is a boy.
At 9 weeks my  was 182BPM
At 20 weeks 142BPM

During the 1st trimester the baby's heart beat will be faster. But as they grow bigger, the heartbeat will slow down a little. I believe it's around week 10-ish that it may slow a little. Then the "normal" range for the rest of the pregnancy is between 140-160.
My baby's heartbeat was 118 the first time I heard it, then 132. Once I got the doppler around 9 weeks or so it was pretty much high 150's and it's stay between about high 150's to high 160's since.
I don't know when the old wives tale kicks in, but it was accurate for me!
ETA: so far for you it sounds like it could be a girl if you listen to the wives tale!
