Kanye West Speech from last night at the concert for Katrina Victims

For those that have seen or heared

Kanye West's Torrent of Criticism, Live on NBC

By Lisa de Moraes

Saturday, September 3, 2005; Page C01

Why We Love Live Television, Reason No. 137:

NBC's levee broke and Kanye West flooded through with a tear about the federal response in New Orleans during the network's live concert fundraiser for victims of Hurricane Katrina last night.

Kanye West performs on ABC's "Good Morning America" concert series at New York's Lincoln Center on Friday, Sept. 2, 2005. West's second CD, "Late Registration," was released Aug. 30.(AP Photo/Michael Kim) (Michael Kim - AP)

The rapper was among the celebs and singers participating in the one-hour special, produced by NBC News and run on the NBC broadcast network, as well as MSNBC and CNBC, because, hey, the numbers couldn't be any worse than usual on a Friday night and hopefully they'd raise a chunk of change for a good cause, the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Among the performers, Faith Hill sang "There Will Come a Time," which included the lyrics, "The darkness will be gone, the weak shall be strong. Hold on to your faith." Aaron Neville performed Randy Newman's "Louisiana 1927" with its chorus: "They're trying to wash us away, they're trying to wash us away."

West was not scheduled to perform; he was one of the blah, blah, blahers, who would read from scripts prepared by the network about the impact of Katrina on southern Louisiana and Mississippi.

West and Mike Myers had been paired up to appear about halfway through the show. Their assignment: Take turns reading a script describing the breach in the levees around New Orleans.

Myers: The landscape of the city has changed dramatically, tragically and perhaps irreversibly. There is now over 25 feet of water where there was once city streets and thriving neighborhoods.

(Myers throws to West, who looked extremely nervous in his super-preppy designer rugby shirt and white pants, which is not like the arrogant West and which, in retrospect, should have been a tip-off.)

West: I hate the way they portray us in the media. You see a black family, it says, "They're looting." You see a white family, it says, "They're looking for food." And, you know, it's been five days [waiting for federal help] because most of the people are black. And even for me to complain about it, I would be a hypocrite because I've tried to turn away from the TV because it's too hard to watch. I've even been shopping before even giving a donation, so now I'm calling my business manager right now to see what is the biggest amount I can give, and just to imagine if I was down there, and those are my people down there. So anybody out there that wants to do anything that we can help -- with the way America is set up to help the poor, the black people, the less well-off, as slow as possible. I mean, the Red Cross is doing everything they can. We already realize a lot of people that could help are at war right now, fighting another way -- and they've given them permission to go down and shoot us!

(West throws back to Myers, who is looking like a guy who stopped on the tarmac to tie his shoe and got hit in the back with the 8:30 to La Guardia.)

Myers: And subtle, but in many ways even more profoundly devastating, is the lasting damage to the survivors' will to rebuild and remain in the area. The destruction of the spirit of the people of southern Louisiana and Mississippi may end up being the most tragic loss of all.

(And, because Myers is apparently as dumb as his Alfalfa hair, he throws it back to West.)

West: George Bush doesn't care about black people!

(Back to Myers, now looking like the 8:30 to La Guardia turned around and caught him square between the eyes.)

Myers: Please call . . .

At which point someone at NBC News finally regained control of the joystick and cut over to Chris Tucker, who started right in with more scripted blah, blah, blah.

"Tonight's telecast was a live television event wrought with emotion," parent company NBC Universal said in a statement issued to the Reporters Who Cover Television after the broadcast.

"Kanye West departed from the scripted comments that were prepared for him, and his opinions in no way represent the views of the networks. It would be most unfortunate if the efforts of the artists who participated tonight and the generosity of millions of Americans who are helping those in need are overshadowed by one person's opinion."

West's comments would be cut from the West Coast feed, an NBC spokeswoman told The TV Column. (The Associated Press later reported that only his comment about the president was edited out.) The show was live on the East Coast with a several-second delay; someone with his finger on a button was keeping an ear peeled in case someone uttered an obscenity but did not realize that West had gone off-script, the spokeswoman said.

It was the wrong place and time, but I don't think he is totally wrong- there were photos with captions referring to white people "finding" and black people "looting".

No one is saying white people are threatening black people, and while there are instances of people crying racism for the hell of it, it is legit at times too.

The question is, and this could be debated forever, would this be going on if most of the people stranded where white and/or middle class? I wonder.

He's such a lowlife. I've disliked him since he was whining about not getting the music award that time (which my girl Gretchen Wilson deserved! :) ). He needs someone to knock the big chip off his shoulder.

Im sure EVERY RACE was looting, AND they interviewed an african american man and HE even said he is ashamed of his own people for acting and doing the things they are doing and he has seen it first hand- so I dont think the media is that off in what they are showing. I mean come on- it is shocking to see someone looting a 36" TV - ?????? and thats news- so they will show it. this world unfortunately will always be black or white which is truly a shame, and to answer an above poster about if they were all white would they have received help sooner- NO I dont think so- this isnt something you can just jump into- there are over 50k people with nowhere to go and the government had to think of what to do in a rational way- where to put them, how to get supplies to them- we are just used to in New York rush rush rush- a tradegy like this has to be thought out carefully for the safety for all as well. A tradegy is just that and I pray for all affected by this.

DH and i were actually talking about this 5 minutes ago- there's a big difference between taking a loaf of bread, and taking a TV- one seems based on survival, while the other seems much more Greed based, BUT in either situation, i feel like you can't judge either way b/c we really have No idea what theyre going through right now- and DH made a good point saying that they seem to have a "lord of the flies' mentality right now... it really is just complete anarchy.

However- comments like this (Kanye West's)... are only going to divide people even more, and he really did not help it in anyway.

I have seen the article and watched endlessly cnn and cnbc, and they have showed every race- looting for everything and anything- 1 article - he is referring to 1 article - for all we know the journalist who reported it and the publisher, editor can be african american- I dont think this 1 article has enough credit to make it a black and white issue. Now if ALL the media was implying that then ok but 1 article- I think it was just another way to cry out racism out on national TV- sorry just my opinion.

Kanye is a hypocrite and I definitely don't think his comments helped the situation at all and just furthers the stereotype of the young black man with a giant chip on his shoulder.

As far as the black-white issue with the looting, I wouldn't be too quick to trust that the media is portraying it without any spins but please, please (and I mean this sincerely) show me a clip of someone of another race looting a giant plasma TV. Looting for food for survival is one thing - these people are in full on survival mode and guess what - there's no one in the store to pay for the food that is just going to go bad anyway - BUT HOW is a plasma TV going to help you survive???? Acts like this really don't do anything for the image of blacks in New Orleans. I'm not saying that white people are or aren't doing it, but I also have to wonder if the media is just not showing us when they do.

First off, not all african americans cry racism. Those who cry racism often do NOT speak for the entire race. It's easy for people who've never experience discrimination based on the color of their skin to not understand what it's like and to say "get over" it. Just bc racism is not as blatant as it was in the past doesn't mean it doesn't exist. Of course not all white people are a threat, just like not all middle eastern people are terrorists.

I agree with everyone there is a time and place for everything and Kanye's statements were not appropriate for the setting. Do I think race has something to do with it - I'm not sure. But it is the type of sh!t that makes me wonder. It doesn't say much for this supposedly great country, who comes to the aid of every other country (whether or not they asked), to take so much time to react. We will never know why it took 5 days for the President to visit the devastation or to get these people water/food.

were you referring to your friends too? I think what others (myself included) found offensive was the sweeping generalization, which is not fair to anyone. If you know what it's like, to suffer racism, you're not really showing it.

No my friends do not and yes they do make comments about what their fellow race says and when is it going to end! No Im not going to accept it if thats what you mean- by me not showing it- it is ridicolus what Kanye said- and its a KNOWN fact- just b/c Im repeating what many say but are oh so afraid to admit on here- is that everytime and YES everytime there is a black and white issue- I dont hear a white person making "shout outs" against african americans! right away its always turned into a black and white issue- even at a time like this- maybe he should have been shouting out- LETS ALL GET ALONG AND HELP EACHOTHER OUT! but like babyavocado said just another african american with a chip on his shoulder!and again for the record as I said before- No I dont think it had anything to do with RACE on why it took so long!!!!

The only reason why I commented was bc your statement made it sound like black people just sit around waiting to cry racism.

Just bc Bush appointed Condelezza doesn't mean he loves him some black people. Bush is not completely stupid. There's a method ot his madness and every appointment he made was carefully assessed.

The only reason why I commented was bc your statement made it sound like black people just sit around waiting to cry racism.

Just bc Bush appointed Condelezza doesn't mean he loves him some black people. Bush is not completely stupid. There's a method ot his madness and every appointment he made was carefully assessed.

No no, I did not mean EVERY african american sits around and crys out racism, I meant that when you hear it on the media - its always made to be a racism thing. Ive yet to hear a positive thing. Hey I saw mexicans and spanish people looting- right in people magazine- Its just not a good thing and for the future for the opposition Kanye is representing, thats all-

edited to add:
I dont know if Bush like/loves black( I hate that word) people, but he does have african american people in very high positions- so even if it is carefully assessed, he is still trusting their judgement, character, and intelligence.

Re: Kanye West Speech from last night at the concert for Katrina Victims

I have a question...when the Tsunami hit, the US was one of the first, if not the first, to go over and give TONS of aid and TONS of money and go down there to help in any way -possible. Most of the people who lived there are black (yes there were some tourists too but the residents are black). Yet...we went and helped. If the US didnt want to help the people of NO because they're black...then why were we so quick to jump to help Tsunami victims? I was thinking about this and was wondering what your thoughts all were?

Re: Kanye West Speech from last night at the concert for Katrina Victims

Black, White, Yellow or Brown the point is his comment was opinionated and ignorant. There is a time and a place for Kanye West to make his statements....the time happened to be the very same week his record was out.

Gee is he getting a lot of publicity this week??? The answer is YES...your one smart guy Kanye, I am sure you'll sell millionsChat Icon
