Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I saw this on the news last night. Its very sad. I have to say I love Rottie's and he looked like any other Rottie. What a horrible story. That poor little girl. I take my pup to Pet Smart all the time and he LOVES it. He licks everyone. I have to say though when a little kid comes they always want to pet him but I get down to their level hold the leash VERY tight and watch the dog just in case you never know what an animal is going to do. It could be the friendliest animal ever. You just never know.

WHY the F was she lawyer shopping though. Thats not cool

Poor Dog and girl. I hate shopping in their for that very reason. Most people don't watch their pets or their kids in their. We were their last week and some ladies dog bit Dh's boot. He was carrying something and asked to be excused and the women kept ignoring him he just wanted her to pull back the lease. She didn't so he tried to fit around and then suddnelly he had a 12lb dog attached to his foot.

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

Most people know b/c there are signs right on the front window, Pets welcome- if you walk into an atmosphere like that, then as a shopper you have to take responsibility for yourself!

My child would have been in a cart and with me at all times even if it was just to pick up something small b/c when dogs any animal for that matter are out of their element they change. My dogs are sweethearts but out of the house they get a bit nervous and protective.

so sounds like the mother was watching a strange unattended Rotty close to her daughter and thought it was cute??????
and then she is out lawyer hunting? hmmm sounds like to me that this wasnt an accident at all, cause it could have been prevented. she should have walked over and picked her daughter up or screamed for her daughter to come to her.
Smells like an opportunist at the expense of her daughter!

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I think the whole thing is horrible and I blame both the mother and the dog owner. My dog is not even that big, and I have taken her into Petco or Petsmart and let children pet her. It's a great way to socialize your dog. However, I am always watching Misty to see how she is reacting and would never take my eyes off the both of them. If you are a dog owner, you know when your dog is going to bite, what exactly was this person doing?
And, of course, the mother should have been watching her child, no dog is totally safe, especially a strange one.
The tragedy of this is two-fold; that little girls life is totally f*d up and dog owners in New York will soon not be allowed to bring their dogs into Petco for a toy or treat or whatever.

Sorry if I sound angry, I just think this was a totally preventable tragedy, much like the little girl in Manorville.

I feel sorry for that little girl for having an idiot for a mother...I don't care how "cute" that ROTTWEILER looked...it's a ROTTWEILER and it's not yours...you know nothing about this dog, its behavior or its warning signs and you're going to let your 5 year old sit there and pet it???Chat Icon

I LOVE how in the beginning of the story she thought it was "cute" that her daughter was petting the dog then after all is said and done she's got a lawyer ready to go and blames Petco...Chat Icon Chat Icon

I agree....that is also why I WOULD never pet a stranger's dog.
Why did she let the dog wonder. I dont think it is Petco's fault al all.

I don't either. Poor kid, though, to have to suffer for others' irresponsibility.

I went to school with the dog's owner, and my dad is friends with her dad. I was very surprised to read it was her dog. She is a huge animal lover, and all her pets are trained.

Diane Christian knows how her daughter loves dogs. So when she saw little Danielle patting a friendly looking rottweiler in PETCO Monday afternoon, she thought nothing of it.

This part alone bothers me to death

was she not WATCHING her 5 year old...Chat Icon

I find it horrifying that the same day she went lawyer shopping-your daughter just spent 4 hours in reconstructive surgery, and you're out looking for a lawyer??? and suddenly she feels that allowing pets in the store makes for an unsafe atmosphere--she knew the pet policy when she walked in the door.

I agree...And i think she is VERY much responsible for what happened to her daughter Chat Icon

I so agree! I thought I was the only one on lunch break who thought this way! So glad I am not alone! I really do blame the mother for most of this!Chat Icon

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I heard this on the radio in the morning at work i think they should not let animals in there i know they want them to interact with there owners but you know they do that at home there is no reason for them to bring them in a petstore. I will tell you something after again hearing it on the radio and here made me flash back to when i was just a teen maybe 12 or13 maybe younger Me and My mom and I think my cousin was over we had to go up to Dairybarn in Port jeff sta well when we got out of our car we were walking and we saw this young girl say around 20 years old and she bend down to pet a German shepard and he launched right at her face this all happened right in front of us we ran inside to get napkins tissues anything to help this girl i mean the blood on her face we felt soo bad eventually the cops came and they took care of her but i will never forget it!Chat Icon Chat Icon

it just shows dogs might look friendly but you still have to be cautious!Chat Icon

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

Dog food and dog supplies are not all they sell in petco. Im not a dog lover and it always would annoy me to go in there for other things ( fish for my sons fish tank) and stuff and have to deal with dogs all around ( even on their leashes)
So now I don't shop there anymore.
Maybe I dont want to be licked by a dog.
Maybe I dont want to have a dog sniff me as I walk around shopping.
Its a PET store, not a dog store.I do not think dogs should be allowed to be in any store where their are shoppers and children.

No offence to the pet owners. JMO

Poor poor girl..shame on that mother.

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I know I am going to totally get bashed for this one, but I have to say it...
There is a sign at Petco saying "Pet's Welcome", not only do they do this so people can bring their pets in for the h*ll of it but they do grooming there and also if you are buying your dog a collar, coat, crate, etc. you can size the animal. I don't know how many dog owners will agree with me, but there have been a few times I bought something and it didn't fit when I got it home. I shop at Petco cuz I can bring the dog there. If you don't like the dog's, as one poster said, you can not shop there.
I find it sad that because of one bad incident Petco is going to have to close their doors to dogs (and cats). And I am pretty sure this is going to end up being the major side effect of this incident.

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

As sweet as Bama is, he gets a little crazy around kids (I don't know why - maybe it's that they're close in size to him). He would never hurt a child, but I never let a child pet him until I have control of him first.

DH was attacked by a dog when he was 5 also, and had his lip torn. I feel bad for that little girl, but I agree that both the mother AND the dog owner should've been more careful......

AGREE 100000000000% ! We all know my thoughts on bringing pets into stores. BUT Rudy loves going to pet stores. We had to by him a new collar and the one I picked out first was WAY to big. If he wasnt with me I would have to have returned it.

I agree too and HIGHLY doubt this incident is going to make all the Pet store chains, Pet supplies, Pet Smart and Petco change their policy. they do grooming, training, so in many cases you have to bring your dog there amongst the other things mentioned above. I wont bring my dogs anymore b/c they changed and get eerie there so I have to measure their neck for the collars b/c I have made too many trips back and forth to get the right size. I think however they will make sure all pet owners have their pet on a leash at all times like at the vet. Its a HUGE selling GIMIC for these stores as well even the ones that dont do the grooming like Pet Supplies to allow you to bring your pet to a pet store.

i agree she wasnt supervising the child - you never know maybe the girl did something to provoke the dog - i'm really sad the owner decided to put the dog down cause a parent couldnt monitor their child.

i take my dogs to petco all the time and am constantly telling kids not to pull on them - my dogs are pretty good about it but who wants to get pulled on constantly - especially my tibetian mastiff people always want to grab on her cause she is so big - half the time people dont even ask if they can pet her - they just come over and jump on her - i'm always saying excuse me - what are you doing ?

i think if you know there will be dogs there you should be monitoring your child.

hell i think you should always monitor your children - i hate to tell you how many screaming running children there are at the stores especially walmart- it makes me nuts.

jmo as always

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

What ticks me off the most is that Petco and the Dog are going to get all the all the bad publicity, not the negligent mother.

Who's the say that the girl didn't get rough with the dog? I know the boy that i used to babysit for would be sitting petting his cat one minute, and pulling on her tail the next.

I feel so bad for the little girl, and the dog.

Re: Dog Attacks girl at Petco

I feel terrible for that little girl, but as an owner of a Rottweiler, it's yet another bad rap for this wonderful breed.
I don't feel it's right for the dog to be put down because of this.....and it's not just the owner that is responsible....the person who brought the dog there is also. HE should not have brought the dog there if he could not handle it.

How do we know that the child didn't do something or touch it in a way that aggravated the animal?

Many years ago a child did this to our family golden retreiver and our dog bit him in the face....that dog hda NEVER bitten anyone before. Turns out the kid had put his hand down the dogs throat!!Chat Icon

that is awful, but im sorry as a parent I would not let my kids go up to a strange dog and play with it especially a rott, I had one and know soemtimes they can get aggressive,as all dogs can if they dont know you!

Amen!! I actually feel bad for the dog. I only go to Petco with my American Bulldog on a prong collar(even though she's an absolutel doll) just because things outside the "norm" for a dog can set them off. As far a parent coming up asking if their child can pet my dog....I usually say she's a big wimp and will probably back away.

Well i think it should ultimately come down to the parent....how dare she point any fingers Chat Icon

And Petco....I think itis nice that people can bringin their pets but it is and can be a HUGE safety risk...
I mean if there is a little water on the floor of ANY store and someone slips....they open themsleves up to be liable for the consumers injuries....
How do they ensure the safety of their other consumers if a dog was to walk by and nip at someone...

Dogs can be great 99% of the time but who knows what possibly can set any dog off, ESPECIALLY seeing another dog...

I think having this policy opens themselves up to a world of issues

Just an FYI that isn't completely relevant but when approaching a strange dog, NEVER reach out to pet them on top of their heads...it's seen as aggressive by dogs and can provoke them. You should always hold out a closed hand and let the dog come to you ...then you start by petting under the chin. This is also good for dog owners to know as well for those that may not have.

I agree!!!!

This woman was not watching her daughter close enough. This incident could have easily been prevented. Plus the fact this woman doesnt know if the dog was even provoked. The dog may have felt threatened by the girl and attacked her in his defense. The girl could have thought she was being funny and hit the dog on top of the head.

A good example: I have a golden retriever. He is the biggest mush in the world. Well I was walking him one day and a little kid probably about 4 saw him and wanted to pet him. The parent said to me "is it ok that Zach pets your dog" I said of course he is really gentle. I told Simba to sit. The little boy came over and he had an open hand and went to pet him on his head but when simba moved his head the kid flinched and he tried it again and the same thing happened. The boy thought it was a game and continued to do it that way. I saw Simba getting a little excited and ansy. I wasnt sure of a reaction that was going to occur. Was he going to growl, was he going ot nip, was he going to bark. I wanted to get the dog calm to prevent any type of negative reaction on his part because of the boy thinking this was a game. I nuzzled against him and told him to calm. I told the little boy "hey let me show you a little trick that will keep the doggie sitting right at your feet" and I showed him a gentle way to pet simba.

A situation that could have gone bad if the parent wasnt watching his kid and I wasnt so protective of my dog.

Their are a lot of "what if" that could have played into a factor of this incident. Blame is being tossed at PetCo and the dog but not the girl. The girl and parent are just as much to blame. I dont think a dog would just bite someone in the face for no reason.

I think this is really sad and the one who really suffers is the little girl.

and the whole lawyer thing really raises my eyebrow. your daughter is in surgery for 4 hours and all you could think about was a lawyer. Something just doesnt seem right with that thinking Chat Icon
