Taking a pay cut

I know we have talked about this before..but here goes..

It's no secret that I am pretty unhappy where I am now at work. I've been seeing a few opportunities close to my house and the salary is anywhere from $5-10k less than what I make now. Truthfully I would be fine with taking a cut as long as I am happy. Do you guys agree? I mean, let's say it's an $8k cut....I know this makes a big difference in my monthly income but it would be worth it right...

Re: Taking a pay cut

I personally think it would be worth it. If you really believe you would be happier then that's priceless. Not to mention, time is money. So if you have a shorter commute you're saving yourself time and money that way too.

Let's say it's a $10K paycut. That comes out to $5.20/hour, $208.33 a week.

Would you accept $210 a week more to go to a job that you hated EVERY day? I would rather cut out my cell phone & use a payphone if I had a boss like yours.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I would say do it. We spend tooo much time at work not to be happy.

Plus, if its closer to your house, factor in what you would save in commuting expenses.

take it from me - I JUST resigned from my job in the city (like 5 min ago) and one of the major reasons is my 4 hour daily commute. I will be making much less in Jersey, but my happiness will be priceless!

Re: Taking a pay cut

I have actually done the math in my head...and unhappiness wins. I like my spending money and if I have to suffer to buy myself presents, so beit. Its called work and not playtime for a reason so..*sigh* I do it.

Re: Taking a pay cut

DH took a $12,000 pay cut last year and we are both so much happier for it. He doesn't have to work with psychos and his commute is much shorter. We're now saving $$ in gas because of his commute.

I would definitely take a pay cut. IMO, no job is worth being sick over.

Re: Taking a pay cut

I'd absolutely take a pay cut to be happier. There's no reason to be completely miserable at your job.

Re: Taking a pay cut

I believe it's worth it- I'm contemplating the same thing, looking at a $20,000 pay cut b/c I'm MISERABLE at my new job. I'm giving it 3 months and if I'm still not happy, I'm leaving.

Good luck!

Re: Taking a pay cut

I think it would definately be worth it! Nobody likes to take a pay cut, but then again, nobody likes to be miserable either. Will that loss of money make you miserable like this job does?

Re: Taking a pay cut

I took a $30K pay cut to get out of a bad situation. You might think that was stupid, but it was so worth it. Within a year I was making more than the job I quit!

Worth it...do it. It's not that much money and your peace of mind is worth so much more than that.

Imagine going to work w/o a knot in your stomach..

And how many hours a week do you work vs. hours in a new job?

Go for it !! I'm definitely considering it myself. I am returning from Maternity Leave next week. I'm trying to hang in for my bonus and then I'm getting my resume out there. I'll take a 10k paycut if I can get some normal hours and a shorter commute.

Just remember, this is the STARTING point for your new job. I don't know how long you were with your other one - but you can only go up from there!

I took a $5000 paycut two years ago and it was definitely worth it. I have a shorter commute and my expenses have gone down. If you'll be happier, definitely go for it!
