i just think its intresting how people get tips from doing there job...

they are not like resturant workers that depends on tips. depending on who your garbage man is and what town you live in, they make a good dollar (i use to work for the town)

oh jeez Baah Humbug Chat Icon

Sorry but i have to disagree...i understand what you are saying but A LOT of jobs give a holiday bonus or tips....ones that get paid VERY well.

IMO it is just appreciating the hard work that is done throughout the year

do you tip your bank to make sure all your transactions go the way they are suppose to go? or do you tip your car manfacture because the car worked for the past week...?

I know what your saying Red but to my point, everybody should be getting tips ( i don't see any tips or xmas bonus so maybe i'm "baah humbug"

no i don't tip the bank lady...but maybe someone does...Or maybe their co does.
I just thinkt here are a lot of people who get Holiday tips....even those who make $$$$$

it's all a matter of perspective! I don't see it as "throwing money away", i see it as a small token of appreciation for the work they do for us, or the service they provide. (mailman/garbage)...YES they get a paycheck already, but like i said, it's a small token of appreciation FROM ME that matters, so THEY know that *I* appreciate them.

I have to say i agree...

They are out there in all kinds of weather and IMO it is worth giving them a tip for.

Lord knows i could NEVER do it. So i appreciate them a tad more.

Just like i give Gas station attendants tips when i go there too (when using full serve)

I understand what you're saying in theory -- I guess the difference between the bank teller, car manufacturer, etc. is that the mailman and garbage men provide a daily (or biweekly) continuous service for you personally. And honestly -- who knows more about you than the people who see your mail and your trash?!?
Last year we were especially generous because the mailman had to deal with name changes and change of addresses and the garbage men were so great about taking A TON of renovation trash.
Money is always tighter around the holidays, so I know its a more sensitive subject this time of year. We should have mail and garbage recognition days in June!

I think I am exempt from the garbage men because not only so they come at 5am but we have special cans and trucks, the garbage can is picked up by a mechanical arm!
I couldn't even leave something on the can for the driver if I wanted to.

I also do not get mail delivery, so we have a PO Box. But I am making treats for the three clerks I see on an almost daily basis because they are so nice.

Couldn't agree more. I have been gone from NY for over 5 years and nowhere else that I have lived do people tip garbage men or postal workers.
Our garbage men don't even get out of the truck and the mail carrier goes to one giant mailbox per section.

Re: What to give $$ to Mailman and Garbage Men?

I work in a Physical Therapy office - we see the same patients 2-3 times a week. Right now, the table in our kitchen is so full of cookies and cakes and gift baskets and boxes of chocolates that we can't even eat lunch on it!

People appreciate when others go above and beyond for them...and they offer gifts or tips to show their gratitude. Many of our patients are elderly and on a fixed budget, but even those people bring a card or cookie plate.

IMO, there's nothing wrong with that. I have a Professor a gift this semester because I thought she was great and I really enjoyed her class. Bottom line, she went above and beyond...and she deserved it!

I have relatives ALL over. I myself have lived in Delaware and they actually DO tip postal workers and garbagemen.

My uncle works for the UPS in FLORIDA and is getting gifts like crazy....

These kind of jobs are EXTREMELY HARD. Especially around the holidays and during inclement weather. And throwing them a tip around the holidays people do ALL OVER.

EVERYONE i know is buying their nursery school teachers, kindergarten school teachers, elementary school teachers...GIFTS...

Holiday gift giving/tiping isn't a new conceptChat Icon
REGARDLESS of what and how much people get paid....

IT is just showing your appreciation for the things people do for you.
