Re: Guys Im really depressed

Just to echo what everyone else has said, if you cannot afford the party, don't have it.

There is still a problem if they have a yearly income of $160K, and cannot afford car payments.

I feel the same way.

Something is not adding up if you are unable to save more than $400 a month, with barely any debt and living in a co-op.

Like others have suggested, you need to sit down and record EVERY SINGLE CENT you spend - do this for 2 weeks and you will be SHOCKED at what you spend your $$ on and where you can cut back and save.

I'm sorry you are in this situation but it's not the end of the world if you can't buy something you *want*...if it's something you need, that's another story. Jmo.

Maybe combine your finances differently - try to bank one check while living off the other...or at least a chunk of one check. $400 a month in savings is not a lot of cushion and you should have more than that on $160k.

edited for spelling

I didn't read all the responses so not sure if anyone already suggested that but I think you need to sit down with you Dh, caculate exactly what part of your monthly income goes towards co-op payments and see how much is left. Then figure out what other expenses you have, i.e. car payments, school loans, gym memberships etc and look deduct that from you total as well.

Then you will see the total you are actually left with. Now go into all your credit cards statements and see exactly what money is being spend on. Do you make impulsive clothes purchase, like if you see yet another beautiful bag that you don't need but just have to have? i think we are all guilty of thatChat Icon
Do you buy $4 coffee every morning? Do you buy $10 lunches? Do you order out a lot? Those things really add up and at the end youa re left with nothing.

Dh and I this what I sugested about 2 moths ago and you wouldn't believe what we discovered. We were wasiting a lot of money on imposlive food purchaces, on little things here and there. It only seems like $10 only once but you buy 10 of those little things a months, that 100 bucks.. See what I mean?

$160K is a LOT of money, especially if you are saying that your mortgage payment is not that big. I think you need to really "detoxify" your spending habbits and really see just where they money is slipping! It will be very benificial, you will feel better and much more in control of your life and you will actually HAVE MONEY! Good luck!

Re: Guys Im really depressed

That's such a hard feeling. To work so hard and not be able to buy something you want or save money etc.

MAybe it would help to sit down with a financial planner and really evaluate your bills and your budget and see if there are areas you can improve what's going on, maybe eliminate high interest debt somehow or change spending habits. Call the phone, cable, etc companies and see if there's a lower plan you can be on. We just realized we were paying $20 more a month to be on the "freedom unlimited" plan, when really all we needed was "Freedom essentials", which just came out. We also switched to a free AOL account, which is another $15 a month. Small cuts like that in several areas can really add up. Chat Icon

Re: Guys Im really depressed

I think you should be going through your budget again. My dh and I make less than half combined of what you and your dh do and we own a home (bought 10 yrs ago though and have 2 kids).

I am guilty of just skimming over the responses but definitely do a written budget together with your DH and maybe you will stumble across an expense that isnt necessary. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon
