New Orleans and all the people who stayed...
What do you guys think? Is it just me or are these people a bunch of idiots?
The govorner WARNED them and had a mandatory evacuation....he told them and other officialls and news reports TOLD them "Hey, people GET OUT of here!! This is a class 5 hurricane and we live BELOW sea level - we're screwed, pack your sh*t and GET OUT....NOW!!"
PLUS they had days notice to leave!!
I mean basically thats what they told the people...yet some idiots still chose to stay! They could have been evacuated by red cross or by family - stayed in hotels, anything...but they stayed.
It just seems so STUPID to me.
ETA: BEFORE YOU FM ME or come at me with an response...read this entire thread!

I thought at first these people are dumb, My husband then reminded me that lots of these areas are poor. people dont have means to leave. They don't have cars they live pay check to pay check and hadent gotten paid yet. Some of them are sick. Need to be on machines. I think they could have gone to a shelter but then again look at what happened at the shelter!

I was thinking the same way for a while but then I spoke to my sister the other day. My BIL has been in the MS area a few times for work and he said he's never seen poverty like the way these people live. So, as much as they were told to leave, many (not all, of course, but many) didn't have the means to get out - no car, no $ or credit cards to stay at a hotel, no nothing.
I do think, though, that there were a few morons who just thought they were bigger than a hurricane, which makes me extremely angry because they're putting the lives of those who have to come and rescue them at risk.

I know they are poor but the government sent trucks to get these people OUT of the area...they could have grabbed their stuff and gone...and been safe.
ETA: and they were brought to shelters...they didnt have to pay for a hotel.

I think some of them were silly for sticking around. but others, they did not have the resources. once we drove from florida to texas. these people are POOR. really poor. a lot of shack houses. I bet they did not have cars or money. Or a lot of them realized that they had no where to go.

It was silly of them, but New Orleans is a such a poverty stricken area and some people just don't have the means, resources to leave the only place they have. Can you imagine not having a car, no transportation, no credit cards to cover expenses or a hotel room in a safe area. They really had no way out. BUT, some did leave, most didn't,
I know if that were me, I would have left way before the governor ordered the evac, especially since new orleans is below sea level.

I think what happens is that even though they were told to evacuate days in advance, these people are so poor, that those lucky enough to have jobs probably were not going to explain to their bosses that they need the rest of the week off to evacuate. Hurricanes are powerful, but their routes are often unknown and ever changing.

DH had heard that on the radio as well. Its so sad, alot of them were getting their checks at the end of the month and because this all happened so close to them getting their next check they literally had NOTHING, no savings or anything. Maybe some of these people were so reluctant to leave their homes because it is all they had in the world. It wasn't the smartest choices they made but I can't help but feel bad

 I just remember my grandmother tried to do this once too (she's 84 and lives by herself). A cop came to the door to tell her about the evacuation and she looks at him all annoyed and said, "well I can't go now - I just put a roast in the oven "
Needless to say the cop told her politely to forget about the g-d roast, there's a hurricane coming

But it isn't just the poor people....they showed this family in a wealthier area of the city who decided to stay. The were showing their historic home, with paintings of the family member who was "king" of Mardi Gras and they were basically living on the 2nd floor of the house, since the first floor is flooded. When the reporter asked why, they said they felt more comfortable in their home than "out there" What??? In your home without power, water surrounding you that is soon to be diseased and no running clean water or sanitation?
They also were showing these volunteer fisherman who were going through communities by boat to pick people up. These guys were saying that people were telling them, "oh, we think we'll stay. we have 3 more days worth of food." The fisherman told them "do you think we are coming by again in 3 days to pick you up? It's now!" I don't get that at all. Unless they just have no idea of how bad it is since they have no power to see it on the TV or hear it on the radio?

I think calling them a bunch of idiots is a bit judgemental.
I mean no disrespect to you, of course. But I don't think that ladies who (for the most part) have jobs/computers and plan nice weddings can really get a feel for abject poverty and not having any options.
As for the ones who weren't poor and stayed, well I guess that could be chalked up to feeling
1) like they can ride out the storm OR
2) some kind of loyalty to their homes.
Those who were evacuated are really not much better off anyway, now are they?
It's just a terrible situation.
Of course to add: It is rather disturbing to see these images of people being 'rescued' and hard not to say: 'why didn't they leave when they had the chance?' But still, I think some people just
couldn't for whatever reason.

what is MORE disturbing is to see the BIG RED X's on the doors of homjes of people who stayed..
And i agree....i think that it is IDIOTIC for ANYONE to stay....

I agree and think that calling them "idiots" is a bit heartless to say on your part. Lots of these people don't have cars, and those that did - didn't have the money for gasoline to leave.
Granted, they were told to evaculate but unfortunately its human nature to not think of the worst sometimes - Im sure they didn't think of the magnitude of the damage that could of happened and in fact did - but you must also remember that in the early stages of the hurricane (once it hit Miami) that it wasn't as strong - so im guessing many people just thought it would be something they could support and experience with few consequences.
Just don't call them idiots, im sure they have all learned something from this experience.

I agree, and I think that in previous years, during hurricane season, I have seen this discussed, that so many people who live in downtown New Orleans don't have cars, are very poor and it would be very difficult to get all of them out of the city if necessary.
I guess we are seeing that now

In my opinion, I dont think it was so cut and dry. So many of those people are sickly, not well off, elderly....I dont think getting out was even an option for so many of them. I too have to admit, I dont think I could have left my pets behind. I think so much more goes into it than just picking up and going.
