Is it wrong for the catholic church to...

Ask for 2 donations? Maybe it's just me but it made me uncomfortable yesterday in church to hear that they were going to be coming around for 2 donations. One for the church (the usual) and the other one was for a priest's retirement fund. We ended up donating to both (cuz we didn't want to look like cheapos) but I just think that asking for 2 donations is kind of wrong. Maybe if it was for a more serious cause like someone that was sick and needed a life saving operation and could not afford the hospital bills, but to ask for someone's retirement? I don't know...

And they wonder why less and less people come to church. I told DH that pretty soon coming to church will be expensive...LOL

uhm I don't see the big deal, if I were a regular & dealt with the priest on a regular basis I would not mind it. Especially if he had helped me resolve any issues

Our church always asks for 2 donations - sometimes a THIRD.

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...

I don't think its wrong at all. People give what they can give, and there were always two donation baskets that came around when i was younger...if anything, my husband and I will put a few dollars in each or whatever we have.

And regarding the priests retirement...its actually common they ask for help with those things. They live off very little and give a lot during their service, and especially if its a priest who has dedicated years to a parish its the norm.

I don't think it's as bad as some other faiths. I usually give one check monthly, and then for the special collections I give what I can. There were times in college all I could literally afford to give was $1.

My cousins belong to a non-Catholic Christian church and they have to submit their taxes each year and then they get an invoice for each family member stating how much their tithe for the year is. They can pay it in a lump sum or pay it out over the year, but it's monitored and they get a new statement each month. I think that's weird.

It makes me uncomfortable especially when you see them driving around in their new cars, sounds strange but I have seen priests in new fancy cars. So that's why when they ask for 2 donations it makes me uncomfortable because it leaves you wondering where your money really goes.

I don't have a problem with it. I know for sure we do not come close to giving 10%, so if it is for a priest retiring, I will throw in a few bucks.

Chat Icon Really?? Wow. That puts a new light on it, lol!!! The priests I have known growing up lived on VERY little...no fancy possessions at all.

BUT.....interesting you brought this subject up. Our landlord last year was a catholic priest...taking on real estate ventures for his retirement and was making a fortune off of rent. YET he was shady, odd and didn't strike me as a priest at all. He told us he would have NEVER rented to us had he known we weren't married...

what if it's a priest that's a pedofile? The church is kind of corrupt these days as it is...so that's why I have a bit of a problem with them asking for 2 donations. I don't recall 2 donations when I was little.

IMO- you can't go thiking like that about everyone. I am a believer in the justice of God. So in that case I would let Him take care of that.

Well that's the thing. It's always the bad ones that ruin it for the good ones. I'm not saying that this priest that's retiring is a pedofile but it just seems a little odd to me that the church being what it is today with these bad seeds, that they would ask for 2 donations.

Doesn't mean he is. I don't think it is a big deal. Not for nothing it is only a few bucks.

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...

That's why I'm not really comfortable lately with the church I regularly attend. 3/4 of the mass is asking for a handout for this, a handout for that. In the back of the church, there's collection boxes for three or four different things. I feel somedays like it's a shakedown for cash. I understand that the church has needs but when they are doing four or five collections during a 1 1/2 hour service, you feel a little tapped out.

I don't see anything at all wrong with it at all! We have two collections almost every week. I don't give in the second collection if I do not believe in the cause.

As for priest driving around in fancy cars, who are we to judge? My pastor has a very nice car that was given to him as a gift from a parishioner.

Well it's comfortable for me to see them driving around in fancy cars when the money is supposed to be going to the poor. Especially since they ask for 2, 3, 4 donations or whatever. And the poor box collections in the back.

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...

The reality is that so few Catholics in the United States give hardly anything to the Church. They rely mostly on funds raised in Europe and Latin America.

It used to bother me to give twice, but then I thought about my Baptists friends that HAVE to pay a tithe of 12% to the church and that blows my mind.

Even when people complain about paying the church when you get married. In the scope of things, the church was our least expensive thing.

Attendence is so poor at masses, I am amazed that more churches haven't closed. Look at what is happening in NYC with Catholic Schools. People would rather send their children to public school (most don't pay property taxes here) then send their children to Catholic School. I already told my husband, our children will go to Catholic school even if we have to get another job to pay for it! I went to Catholic School, I taught in one for ten years. I think that they are great places for children to learn about family and community in addition to reading, writing, rithmatic.

That money is going to the poor or whoever the extra collections are for. Do you really think the priest is dipping his hand in the poor box to pay for his BMW?

I really don't understand where your thinking is coming from- maybe I am just not understanding. You can not assume that they are taking the money from donations and doing whatever they want with it. For instance, how do you know that the car they are driving around with didn't come from their own money (just because they are a priest - doesn't mean that they do not have money). How do you know that the priest didn't have a family member or even a member of the church pass away and they gave them the car.

Please stop stating that just because they are a priest in the church that they are not entitled to have money - you do not know their situation unless you personally outside of the church.

About the donations - I believe in that they go to a good cause and donate what and when I can. You are not going to be 'punished' if you do not donate.

Re: Is it wrong for the catholic church to...

This is how I see it. I give money w/ the assumtion that it;s going to good use. I feel like I am doing my part. If you are skeptical about ths use of the money then don't give or if you are not at all comfortable then search for a new faith instead of trying to find gaps & holes in the house of worship where you are now. The point of giving & going to church is not to dissect & criticise. It's to make YOU a better human being and to build your relationship with God. IMO

IMO - if the only reason you're donating is to NOT look like "cheapos"..then i think you need to re-evalute WHY you do donate. JMHO
