In my opinion, I dont think it was so cut and dry. So many of those people are sickly, not well off, elderly....I dont think getting out was even an option for so many of them. I too have to admit, I dont think I could have left my pets behind. I think so much more goes into it than just picking up and going.
exactly, plus the poverty/education level is such that many only know basic survival

People came around and told them they needed to evacuate. They didnt go. People came around to help them evacuate and they still didnt go.

Its easy to call people idiots while we sit up here in NY. Who knows what everyones individual sitution or mindset was/is. The point is whether you obeyed the evacuation or not, you are in trouble anyway. Both evacuatees and non are in a state of devestation. Who are we to say what we would have done if it was us? We may panic and not do the right thing either.

Exactly Don...
I think its easy for us to sit back and say I would have done this or that but when your IN the situation, its much different. I am sure some of them are kicking themselves for not leaving but I think for the most part, those that stayed, wouldnt and couldnt have done it any differently. They didnt have much choice.

you have to figure that if people are picking up and going, without cars or money...then at that point they are chosing to be homeless. I am sure a lot of them thought it was going to be bad, but not this bad.
also, I do not want to offend anyone either...but I would not be surprised if a lot of the more poor cities did not get TV coverage. I can guarentee that there was no CNN, but I do not remember seeing a lot of antennas on top of their "homes"
and a lot of them are uneducated and have probably never left the outskirts of their city.

Even some people that tried to get out just couldnt. I read on one of the New Orleans message boards that a family sat in their car for 6 hours without moving and since the storm was so close to hitting, they were told to turn around and go back.

Very off key here...but a lot of my Florida friends think that I am nutty for working in the World Financial Center. To people who live other places then NY, they think it is crazy everytime we chance getting on a bus or train. Different strokes for different folks.

Kathy - thanks for saying this....I got in an argument with someone yesterday over this. I said it was unfair to compare this to the tsunami - - that happened with little or no warning. This - they had lots of warning. We heard two days worth of speculation about how far below sea level certain areas were - and this all before the storm made landfall. Yes, there are poor people and I feel bad for them. Could the government/officials done something - maybe?

that is what is so hard for me to take. Even if they survived, a lot of them are going to have loved ones that did not. so that whole, as long as we have each other thing does not apply here. Last night was a mother and her 9 year old son. They did not know where her 15 year old was. The poor little boy looked so sad, like above all else, he is mourning his brother.

Kathy, I think part of it is that the city is surrounded by so much water, so there are few major arteries into and out of the city. So when a disaster hits, it is difficult to get a large number of vehicles out of the city quickly. Also, if you didn't get out by a certain time, the city was totally closed off - no one came in and no one left. I don't know what the situation is now - if only authorized vehicles can get in and out or what.
Much of New Orleans is inner city poor or working class people who rely on public transportation and stay mainly within the city limits to work and shop. I think it is fairly expensive for them to travel out of city limits. So perhaps it is like trying to clear out Manhattan, if you could only use a couple of our bridges and tunnels, and we had no subway service.

Sometimes we think we can weather a situation adn not know the magnitude of it all. Some people had no where to go...had no choice and figured they would ride it out.

trust me when i say that this is one of the poorest cities in America, the poverty, the illness, the education is very low. So to say, get up and go is fine, but seriously, many of these people do not have the physical or mental capabilities for anything beyond basic survival

I work with someone, who has a brother who was still there as of Monday. She hadn't heard from him since. He works in a hosipital, so while all the rest of his family left, he stayed & went to work.
So, there are extenuating circumstances for some people.
I think there are other people that didn't think it would be this bad.

God, that being the case you would think since it was a "mandatory" evacuation, that officials would have come around and gathered up all the people who were in this predicament and explain it to them and help them leave. Awful.
