Best Pizza on Long Island?
Explore Long IslandIn search of the best slice of pizza
Dump all the pepperoni, sausage and baked ziti you want on it. Load up the buffalo chicken if you so desire. Maybe even go after a non-corner.
No matter what type of pizza you choose, ultimately it's the combination of sauce, spices, cheese and dough that determine how delectable a slice of pizza can be.
It's all a matter of pizza palate preference, which is why Explore Long Island is launching a reader-driven quest to find the best slice of pizza on the Island.
So much goes into the preparation of a slice of pizza. A pizza maker's decision to use fresh mozzarella instead of the bulk-ordered bags of cheese can seriously alter the taste. Is the dough fluffy or flat? Did the pizza preparer throw some garlic powder on the pan before placing the dough on the tray?
These are things we the pizza eaters don't always take into consideration. We just know whether or not we liked the slice.
On Long Island, there seems to be a pizza place on every street, or at least in every strip mall or plaza. Every slice tastes different, which if you do the math, is two-thirds shy of impossible.
We're asking readers to e-mail us using the form below their choices for the best slice of pizza on Long Island. Factor in anything you wish: taste, toppings, price, whatever. Be sure to include your name, town and age and the reasons for your choice. Your responses could also be used for publication.
Explore Long Island will tabulate the results received through Oct. 19, 2006. The top five vote-getters will be profiled in photo essays on newsday.com/explore shortly thereafter. You will then be able to vote for the best slice of pizza on Long Island.

Every good pizza place we went to closed or got bought by Greeks sooner or later.
It's really depressing. A new place opened in Long Beach and they said their grand opening was last night. We already had their menu and picked out what we wanted on the way home.
But did they answer the phone? No. On the way to get quesadillas, we passed the place. Lights out, no one home.
We have the worst luck with pizza.

I'd love to know. I worked in Mineola for 5 years and have family out there (I live in Brooklyn) and I haven't found any yet. I mean...there HAS to be good pizza somewhere, but it's a best kept secret.
actually, Grimaldi's opened up a place in Westbury and the one in Brooklyn is my favorite pizza ever...so perhaps there?

Favorite place (better then the city) is Segesta in Levittown. Everyone swears by Spassos in Wantagh its next to my job its so so...
They do have good pizza places on the island.

Here is my answer: There IS no good pizza on Long Island. Best Pizza is in Brooklyn and Queens.
Ozone Pizza in Ozone Park, New Park, and I forgot the name of the place in BK.

SO TRUE!! IMO, the best pizza I have had on LI is Aegean Pizza in Holbrook

And believe me I am always craving one of them....they are all about 20-30 minutes from my house so DH is not happy when I get the cravings!

That sounded bad, didn't it? I didn't meant it to sound that way.
There's nothing wrong with Greeks. We just didn't like how the menu changed or types of pies they made after they bought the places.
We like traditional italian stuff.

What place in Long Beach? I wasn't aware of any new places.
Almost at the corner of LB Road and Park. It's flanked by East Meets West, the laundromat, and the Tae Kwon Do place. Across from Blockbuster.
If you're interested, I'll let you know if they ever open! Their menu looks really good.
We weren't thrilled with Gino's and their prices, don't like the service of East End/West End pizza, and Bella Luna is now a Greek restaurant!
Long Beach is like a good pizza desert.

I've had pies from Deer Park, Ronkonkoma, and Farmingdale, and they are all the same!
