Did you go away to summer camp when you were younger?

I looked forward to it every year. I think I was 11 when I started going. My aunt was talking about it the other night, and how she would never send her kids, that it seems too unsafe...

but isn't it part of growing up?

I did... but you have to remember that kids are MUCH MUCH different nowadays.

I was forced to go to sleepaway camp and was miserable. I liked day camp though.

My DH spent every summer with his family at a cabin on a lake they owned. He has very fond memories.

I don't know, my 14 year old brother went to camp last summer for 2 or 3 weeks...

I went to sleepaway camp for 2 years. The first year was great, but the second year $ucked b/c all of the girls turned into biatches. The camp was great, but the campers were awful. Hardly anyone in my age group returned the following year. My brother went to sleepaway camp for at least 6 or 7 years.

I never went to sleep away camp because I didn't want to. However, my dad is a professor, so he used to ask us where we wanted to go to camp for the summer, then apply for a job at that camp and we'd go for free It was AWESOME spending so much time with my dad all summer. I attribute my extremely close relationship with my dad to his willingness to spend his summer vacation with us

I went to sleepaway camp for 3 summers, from ages 12-14. Although I was terribly homesick at first, it was definitely one of the best experiences of my life in terms of personal growth, and one that I would like my children to have if they are interested in it.

I spent the summer's with my dad... and my only friend went to sleepaway camp for 6 weeks.

So i spent 6 weeks playing by myself. I wanted to go to the camp with her so badly, but it kind of defeated the purpose of seeing my dad.

I did go to a day gymnastics camp though.

I always wanted to, but it was too expensive.

I worked as a counselor for 2 summers, though, and it was a lot of fun!

I went to camp for 11 years and then ended up working their from a CIT to a counselor. I loved it, and It is a big part of growing up.

ETA: Mine wasnt a sleep away camp, read the post to fast.

i went away one summer to a came in ct but iw ent to day camp in whitestone for many many years

of course, i grew up with 3 other siblings really close in age and a block full of children i was friends with, so there was no need to go anywhere

I did... well, really, everyone in my neighborhood did. I went from 3rd grade to 9th and I absolutely LOVED it... my fondest memories ever. I literally begged my parents everyday to let me go when I was in 3rd grade. THe camp was in the Berkshires, but it wasn't so bad because I was there with my brothers....

I went to sleepaway camp in the Catskills from age 7 through working there when I was in college. I took a few years off to go teen tours and stuff. I wanted to go the summer before when I was 6 since my sister went away but my parents felt I was too young . Now looking back, I can't believe they let me go at 7! My counselors were like 19 years old! I absolutely loved the experience and I hope to be able to give that opportunity to our children some day. DH's family spent their summers at the Pines in the Catskills so hopefully he feels the same way I do.

Nope, never went and neither did any of my friends.

ETS: Not that there is anything wrong with camp, but when I have kids they probably won't go either.

Nope - never went to camp. But we have a small beach bungalow so we spent the summers there.

I did. I went from 8 years old-15 years old. My parents were both teachers so we would go to camp for free while they worked at the camp. I will tell you I got flack from my friends at home because none of them went away however it was the best thing I ever did. I have the best memories from there.... I hope to send my kids when they are old enough.( although I have to start now since it is very expensive) My camp was in the Berkshires and it was so much fun.

My brother and I went to Kutchers Sports Academy one year but it was mainly because my father was the basketball coach and we probably got to go for free. I think my mom came up every couple of weekends or so, I don't think it would be considered the normal "summer camp experience".

Especially since they bussed us over to Kutchers Country Club once in a while for movies and such.

I went to slepp away camp for 2 years in middle school and I loved it! Dh went for like 5 years and loved it too. I would send our kids, but not until they asked for it themselves.
