My 10 yr old son just came hoem from school........
and told me they watched a video on puberty today, and he was telling me about the penis and erections
im not ready for this

My friend is was a 5th grade teacher and is now a 6th grade teacher and they need CONSENT. You should lodge a complaint!

Aww I got my period in 3rd grade, I think they need to start learning about that early on! I got mine before we learned anything in school.
My parents didn't sign anything. That I know of, at least.

Our Mom's had to be with us. I remember going back to the school one night after dinner to see "THE" movie. I think we were in 5th grade.

In 5th grade we had some 3 day program called growing up, feeling good. I think the parents were there for part of it.

I mean im glad that they r teaching him, and I am even more glad with the fact that he feels comfortable talking to me about this ...but it just shocked me ...i feel so old...and my baby is so not a baby

I think that we got "The" movie in 4th grade. I dont see a problem with them learning about what is happening with their own bodies.

OMG!! I would be appauled if my sons school did this without me knowing about it first.
My son is 10 too.. I think 4th grade is to early to know about erections and what causes them..
I think maybe before they go into JR. high, like 12.. is a little better for me.

I know we watched "growing up on broadway" with the girl from Annie- in 5th grade
I think my Mom signed something for that
but if it was just regular health class no
I wouldn't be too upset- I am sure he could have learned about worse things on the bus- I would happy he learned the right things and feels ok to talk to you about it

But I have to add, sadly 10 year olds are having sex. And 12 year olds are getting preggo, so it is important to know. But still!

Yup I agree with this. They were teaching about the body. Besides, I think health and sex ed should be taught in elementary school because I had a "sex ed" topic in middle school and there were already a couple of girls who since 5th grade started doing sexual favors for the boys in my grade.

just out of curiousity...since i don't have kids but did you son get some sort of outline on what he was going to be learning this year?
Is it in his books or materials they give him to read?

Which is why i asked if there was some wort of curriculum giving at a parent-teacher night, or to the child at the beginning of school...etc
But couldn't a child as the same questions about say...AIDS or Cancer or anything else learned in school?

We got the talk in, I think 5th grade. I don't remember if we had to get consent for this - I feel like we didn't, but maybe they let the parents know ahead of time? I kinda think that would be a good idea, just so the kids don't come home and surprise the parents with the "guess what I learned today" question. I can imagine I'd be thrown a little.

good point....

I don't have children yet and I might think differently when I have them.
But for now....In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with learning about your body.....the more you know the better.....

no I didnt get an outline or anything, that is why when he started telling me the things he learned it kinda thriew me ..but last night after dinner, I told him that I was glad that he felt comfortable enough to talk to me and that he knows he could come to me for anything and that if he had any questions at all to ask me ...so he said ok........then about 15 minutes later I got bombarded with questions from him...........wow how 10 yr olds have changed since I was a kid

I don't know about the signed consent, but yes, I would at least like a warning so that I was "prepared" for the questions... those kind of questions kinda blindside you and it's definitely a very important subject..
that being said... OMG I'm not ready for that

Kids are growing up way too fast. We may think they're not ready for these types of talks, but some of them are probably going through puberty already. IMO, it's better they learn about their bodies from their parents and teachers than from discussions with their peers.
