QOTD_ Would you serve alcohol to your child and their friends in your home????

I woke up this morning to this topic on the news and I thought it was pretty ironic, becuase we have my cousins high school graduation party today and my aunt went out and bought a keg for my cousin and his friends to drink at the party. I don't want to give my opinions yet, but would love to hear others. Would you serve alcohol to your child AND their friends in YOUR home??? Why would you do it???

ETA- its my cousins high school grad party!!

graduation for HS.. No
graduation from college- Yes.

I know many kids (as most of us did) start drinking WELL before theyre 21, and maybe at 18,19 whatever, i would let MY own child drink in my house (i guess along those lines that if theyre going to do it, i want them to be safe Chat Icon.. though i cant say for sure) BUT i wouldnt let other minors drink in my house with my consent. I think that other parents may have very strong values Against this, and while kids are going to do what theyre going to do,,, i dont want to seem like i am Enabling other kids to go against their parents by creating a 'safe haven' for underage drinking. funny story: My Birthday is 3 days before XMAS. So, when I turned 21, we had XMAS at my Dad's house. He wouldn't not let me drink ANYTHING. People were making fun of him and he just kept saying, "I don't care. Not in my house"

So, he may have been a little extreme, but I would not serve alcohol to my kids and definitely NOT to their friends.

Would I let me kid take SIP of my drink from time to time? Maybe.

But, they will not have their own glass or their own portion until they are over 21

ABSOLUTELY NOT!

I would NEVER serve alcohol to someone underage....EVER.

There is no way in hell i am going to KNOWINGLY do something illegal like that, opening myself up to A LOT of trouble.

NO FREAKIN WAY!!!!!! HS is still a teenager- and you are responsible for their actions- even after they leave your property!!!!! god forbid they drive drunk. Alcohol poisening! You would lose everything, get sued and possibly be jailed for serving minors.

College yes- yes they can still drive drunk and get alcohol poisening but at least they are of age and allthough I would feel terrible if something happened, at that point they are an adult and able to make their own decisions and consequences.
When I become a parent, I would hope if my teenager goes to a party such as a graduation party that they are NOT being served alcohol and if my kid came home smelling like liquor or drunk- that parent would be getting a not so nice visit from me!

I agree, I would never serve alcohol to underage kid.

Letting my own kid have a sip is something I may do in a family, controlled situation.

If, as a parent, I found out someone else was serving my kid alcohol, I would be very angry.

I wouldnt serve alcohol to minors either.
What happens in situations like this is that should something happen after anyone leaves the party, the ones who held the party are responsible and can be in trouble for "serving minors" alcohol.
Hey, you become responsible for an adult who leaves your house intoxicated!

Even when I actually when to bartending school they can go after you, the bartender if someone left your bar and was involved in an incident Chat Icon

I just dont think it is appropiate and I guess sometimes you do have to turn the tables and see how you would feel if your child was served alcohol being underaged.
There is a reason why the drinking age was raised!

Hell no!!! Granted, I'd rather my kid drink in my house than at someone else's house, but no way will I serve alcolhol to a minor, let alone a minor in my house. If ANYTHING happened, I couldn't live with myself. And I hope that I teach my children enough so that they make the right decision. I can't stop them from drinking, but if they do it, NO NO NO GETTING IN A CAR!!! That was my mom's biggest rule. Don't drink, but if you do, NEVER DRIVE or drive with someone who has been drinking.

Not at 17 and 18. Especially if they were under 18 - that's even worse giving it to a minor.

My mom threw a suprise 21st birthday for me about a month before i actually turned 21, and I wasn't allowed to drink anything Chat Icon

Re: QOTD_ Would you serve alcohol to your child and their friends in your home????

Maybe...not like a keg though, thats crazy. I know my mom let me have a few beers on my 16th birthday and I drank on my 18th birthday, my mom was kinda relaxed about it, I guess because I was doing it at home and not somewhere outon the streets.

I would allow my 19-20 year old to drink..but I also think it depends on the person. If I had a child who I thought at the time was immature maybe for their age, my opinion would change.

Cant really say till I have one I guess.

Re: QOTD_ Would you serve alcohol to your child and their friends in your home????

I wouldn't.........however when I graduated HS one girl's parents had a party for her with alcohol. The second you walked into the party you handed over your keys and were expected to sleep over even if you had only 1 drink.

Her mom called the other parents and told them that we all had been drinking and they could either pick us up or we were staying. She made no exceptions.

Her mom took care of everyone and even made a really nice breakfast the next morning.

Re: QOTD_ Would you serve alcohol to your child and their friends in your home????

no way! not to act like a saint, i drank before i was 21....but they have charged parents with all types of things after instances get out of hand when kids drink at a house, even if the parents are not home but provided the alcohol. i think it also somewhat sends the message to kids that they have to have alcohol to have fun, which is not the case. they will have plenty of time to experiment as they get older if they choose, but its not right to necessarily put it out as an option when peer pressure plays such a big role, and, of course, it is illegal.

i know the whole safe haven theory is out there but its still a big risk to give them any type of alcohol, we all know "good" drinkers and "bad" ones too - and there is no prediciting how alcohol effects people. as an adult, i know i could not live with myself if god frobid something happened, and i am too big of a chicken to worry about getting caught or having the other parents get mad at me, too

No. I think it sends a message that alcohol is something you need to have a good time and celebrate. There are plenty of other ways to show my kids a good time besides alcohol use.

Re: QOTD_ Would you serve alcohol to your child and their friends in your home????

I agree with everyone!! There is no way in the world I would ever do this. It is just plain stupid to me. They are putting so much in jeopardy by doing this, the kids, their home and their azzes. My aunt said she is taking the keys if they have a car as soon as they walk in the door, but like my DH said, so what, he has a spare key in his wallet, so who is to say they don't and say they are walking home and get in the car. Also, they pointed out on TV this morning, you never know what kind of medication a child might be on, and lets face it, kids don't think, what if one kid is on a med and there is a reaction from alcohol? I really am Po'd about the whole thing and definitely think its wrong. My aunt used to criticize my mother when my brother was younger and would sneak a drink at a family party 12 years ago, yet in this day and age its ok for her to serve. You can be sure I will be voicing my concerns to her when I arrive there today. I think it is completely ridiculous. She is quite the attention seeker and I really feel this is being done so she can remain the "cool mom" to all my cousins friends. I just pray that everyone is ok and for my aunt and uncles sake nothing goes awry.

I've seen it done (i went to a party where the aprents served beer in 8th grade, even)....but I wouldn't do it. it's illegal, I don't want to encourage or even allow underage drinking. Not only that, if one of the kids were to god forbid get in a car drunk, or if things got out of hand and kids got into a fight or got hurt, you coud be in for a HUGE legal problem, and maybe have the responsibility for a kid getting hurt or worse.

I think letting your own kid do it at home is something different. For most of my life I've been allowed to have a glass of wine at dinner or something..(a very small small glass before I got older), but allowing your own child to do something at home not in the presence of other children is completely different

your right...
I dont think I would serve it to others children. Not at 18 for sure. Maybe if I saw a 20 year old have a beer in my house, it would be ok...but no I do not agree with the high school graduation party thing of serving alcohol.

That isn't smart either. If that 20 year old gets into a car and something happens. If he said that he got that beer from YOUR house. You are SCREWED!

true, but this is a what if, and I would be monitoring the situation.
Kids drink regardless, and I would feel safer it in my house then out on the streets. But again not unless I felt the person was mature and it was a drink or two at say age 20. I dint think anyone would get "legally drunk" in my house unless I didnt know about it.
