I disagree. It's not a reality in the least. I would say that 90 something % of the time, kids aren't acting out because they are trying to "win." It's usually due to the need for attention and negative attention is just as good as any attention. In other words, if you yell at a student or constantly reprimand him/her for something, believe it or not but they are getting something out of that and the behavior will only continue.
i never said they're "trying" to "win"...but the end result is just that. they've succeeded in alienating another teacher, and they're now 'in control', the tough kids who call the shots. this is probably whats going on in their minds.
i'm SURE some of those kids in D's former class are thinking this very thing!! "wait until the NEXT teacher comes along..we'll do the same thing to him/her too, and he/she will leave" - hence, the repeat behavior!! you said it yourself.
their REASONS for acting this way (ie home life, etc..) are a whole other set of issues!
lack of guidance/parental control at home = lack of respect.
The whole mentality of the problem lying within the student is a poor way to look at things and unfortunately too common. Yes bad parenting is always an issue, but poor teaching is as well. It's a hard thing to admit, but teachers really need to look at their own practices when they have an out of control student or classroom and figure out what's not working. It's always so easy for us to say that their problems are due to their issues at home (which they often are) or that they're just bad kids looking to take over the classroom. Unfortunately their negative behaviors are also easily facilitated through poor behavior management in the schools. They are with us about 6.5 hrs a day. That's more then some of these kids see their parents!
I've just found that as hard as it may be to admit, those that have found themselves in the "teacher vs. student" battle, may not be effectively addressing the pertinent issues. Like I said before, I've seen teachers who found the right tools and used the proper interventions, turn students people basically thought were criminals, into someone able to achieve a regents diploma. Every student is different and every student warrants that individual attention.

I am sorry that you had sucha bad experience. HOpefuelly you will find something better for yourself. Its sad that those kids behaved like that, they are going top loose out on so much.

Congratulations for having enough stregth to do what you knew was right for you. Best of luck to you in whatever you decide to do. I'm sorry you had to go through such a horrible experience as a first year teacher.

I definitely agree with some of the points you both made. Like MrsERod said, there are kids who have that "we won" mentality. My guess is that there is so little in their lives that they control, and if they struggle academically, they latch onto the idea that they can be good at SOMETHING, even if it's a negative.
And I also know firsthand how good lessons CAN ward off bad behavior MOST, not all, of the time. I struggled at first but my management is prettty good now. And it's amazing when I see my classes when they have some of their other teachers; kids who would never dare get out of their seat when I teach would literally be running around the room when their science teacher was there. But a couple years ago, I did have a group that was borderline unmanageable. I tried so hard, but there was a bad mix of personalities (not to mention 24 out of 30 were boys). If only there was a solution that always worked in every situation.

Sorry it didn't work out!! I probably would have done the same thing. You don't need to be threatened or told to join a gang. Your safety is more important and in this day and age, you never can tell if they'll act on things they say!! Best of luck!!!
