I agree with you that is has become political. I also feel that parenting has become sort of like a competition, who had an unmedicated delvery, who BFs, etc. I feel strongly about BFing because I had a BAD experience when trying to BF my first. The lactation consultant was rude to me, as were nurses in the hospital. I have no doubt that many other women experience the same things I did. I feel women do not get adequate support or advice from those around them. Most of the time when I hear a woman has stopped BFing its because they didn't get any support and were misinformed by their doctors. We're also lead to believe that formula is just as good as breastmilk which it certainly isn't. Breastfeeding your child isn't a guarantee that they will be healthy, but it gives them much more health benefits than if they were fed formula. And me personally, I don't try to make other women feel guilty. I just know that if I hadn't had my mother there to help me learn and support me during my first few weeks as a new mother, I would have quit BFing and given my daughter formula.

I'm quoting Greeneyes361708 because I am having such a hard time bfing. I had some preclampsia so the nurses were very impressed that I was able to bf exclusively in the hospital. I asked every nurse who came in to the room and the lacatation consultant if I was doing it right. We didn't have any problems until the first nigth I was home. They forget to tell you in the hospital that the baby changes around the 3rd or 4th night. They become a lot more active and more demanding with feedings. I had nursed the first night home for about 2 hours and she was still rooting for more. I knew something wasn't working right and I was devastated to give her formula but I did because she wasn't wetting diapers or having bowel movements. I was literally sobbing because the BFing was not working and I felt like such a failure.

The next day I called around and got an appointment to have a lacatation consultant come to the house. Prior to this, I called the hospital I delivered at and they spoke to me and basically said to keep bfing and you don't need any help. I still felt differently.

I did meet with the lacatation consultant and we were not bfing right. My milk would not have come down without her latching on right and she wasn't.

That was 3 weeks ago and I'm still having issues with bfing. I continue to try to work through them because it's important to me.

I share all this because BFing isn't always natural and is a lot of work so you have to be committed to it. If you aren't, don't let anyone make you feel guilty about your choice.

I did not BF and never planned on it. I personally do not feel comfy with it and I wasn't really convinced of the research on it benefits. .

You do NOT have to BF at all, but I don't think the scientific evidance is on unsupported at all. It is well researched and even the formula companies state it in their marketing materials.

I've always been 100% completely anti BF- UNTIL i saw how much formula cost Chat Icon
so i'm taking a class and i'm going to try & 100% work through it even when it stinks and it is uncomfortable.
i'm just going to try & make it work and pump at work and try to do it exclusively- this is my plan and I hope I can do it... but I'm trying to stay positive and be 100% that I can.

OK, so formula can't compare, but the bottom line is most of us were formula fed and are quite healthy!!

As for me, I really didn't want to BF and was kind of hoping it would fail my first time around, but I persevered, ended up loving it (beyond all expectations), and was sad that I had to give it up at 14 weeks.

Very strangely, this time I feel like I don't want to do it again, but I will give a go and hopefully, will have just as wonderful an experience.

I am not planning on BF. I acknowledge there may be health benefits to BF. But I don't feel comfortable with it for several reasons. BF is not for everyone, that's why they make formula. I don't feel guilty about this. I think I'll be a great mother!Chat Icon

I have to say i agree with Niecey. i did a lot of research myself and while yes there is tons of evidence out there supporting these things stated about the benefits of BF...i have met numerous people who BF their children who had many childhood diseases and I know many children who were not BF who turned out just fine. And while "thousands of years of the human race thriving on breast milk", today we have an alternative with formula. Personally I think the benefits we hear about BF are a little blown out of proportion. Do I think breastmilk is good for a baby...of course...but i do not necessarily believe all they say about the benefits to mother and child are right. That of course is JMO.

That is exactly how I feel. My mother had 4 children that were formula fed and each of us were healthy as kids as well as adults. I have no burning desire to do it and I certainly do not consider my mother neglectful for not breastfeeding me.

Chat Icon I would think that the formula companies that make BILLIONS of dollars a year would be the ones blowing things out of proportion. I am a little flabberghasted that people actually think that breast milk is not as good as the studies say it is. You think that scientists are lying about breast milk being the perfect food for babies? How could milk produced by human females designed to be eaten by human babies not be the absolute best way to feed your child? Yes we have an alternative with formula but that doesn't even make it on the same level as breast milk. That would be the same as comparing feeding your kid a cheese doodle with and apple. Theres not some conspiracy against the formula companies to make it seem lesser than breast milk, thats just the way it is. Its one thing to formula feed, but its a whole different thing when you'd actually knock breast milk to justify your decisions.

Because of all the medications on I am on AND the radiationa nd chemo, I am only doing bottle feeding. Regardless, i was leaning towards bottle feeding only anyway. If thats what YOU want then that is what YOU should do. Don't let ANYONE bully you into anything else.

The post said "feeding plans"....you never really know how your "plan" will work out. Sometimes milk supply is low, you find it too physically demanding, it's just not for you etc etc....To comment before you experience it is a little premature. Some of the formula comments on here are disheartening....There are some moms who cannot BF (like those on chemo and other medications) so please keep the negative comments to yourself. We all want whats best for our baby......

PS>See you in a few months on the Parenting board and let us know how it works out for you....

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

Just remember ladies, what you plan for may not be what's in the plans for YOU. I wanted to breastfeed so badly, but she would not latch on. Not after working with an LC or anything. So, I decided to do what was next best...pump full-time. So, for the first 7 weeks of her life, she only had BM, great, I planned on doing that for as long as I could. Well, it turns out my daughter has severe food allergies, and if I wanted to continue to give her BM, I would be living on water and bread. Wait, no, not even bread because they weren't sure how even THAT was affecting her. So after a long, emotional struggle with what to do, we ended up having to put her on prescription hypo-allergenic formula that is NOT covered by our insurance.

So, go ahead and plan for whatever you'd like, but know that sometimes, what YOU want isn't what's best for your child. If my daughter was still on breast milk, she'd be malnurished and failing to thrive. So, I guess in my case, breast isn't best, huh?Chat Icon

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

I think preggos who plan to BF know that it is just a plan. I have to go into this with a positive state of mind. I know there will be obstacles, challenges, a year without being drunk again, I have never been someone's sole food source, and I have never had a child on my boob...all so new, but I am reading that it is the best, so I am putting my best foot forward.

Of course formula is fine. I would never knock anyone for formula feeding. Its none of my business. But I think preggos all know that plans change, I just have to go into this with a positive and clear head.

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

I was all for BF. I also saw the prices of formula and thought that I would definitely BF as long as possible.

At the hospital I had a hard time positoning Jiavana because I am pretty large on top. The nurse tried to help but she said the size was making it difficult.

I still tried and continued. I never felt like she was getting anything.

Finally when my milk came in I decided just to pump so I knew she was getting something.

Pumping went well for about 3 weeks. I had the avent hand pump whch worked great, so i went and got the avent electric pump...which wasn't as effective for me.

My supply slowly kept diminishing. After 30 min I could barely get 2 oz.

I made the decision to FF. Jiavana just wasn't getting enough and 2 oz wasn't worth all that time.

I was upset that I couldn't feed her naturally, but I am not against formula and it has made my life easier.

When I have my second, I will try and BF as long as possible again. Who knows what will happen.

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

The comment earlier on this page about likening breastmilk to apples and formula to cheese doodles really upset me...

Do you think I would willingly feed my baby what i thought was garbage instead of breastmilk??? OF COURSE breastmilk is a great first food for humans. I'm sure scientists and pediatricians know what they are talking about. BUT formula has come fairly close...it is chock full of vitamins, iron and anything else a baby would need to develop and thrive.

PLEASE think before you post. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. And a a new mom who gave breastfeeding a chance b/c she wanted to do it, and it didn't work for her...it hurts to read things like that. I am doing what i think is best for my baby. And he's doing just fine.

I don't need to justify my decisions and I am coming in here WAY late...but apples and cheese doodles....that is an ignorant, mean comment.

Back in the 1960's it was FROWNED upon to BF, why....because someone somewhere with a probable MD attached to his name said so.

I had an epidural at birth and FF right away. Will that make my child an asthmatic, stupid, food allergic moron...I don't think so. That's the type of research I DON'T BELIEVE.

I agree.

Again, I don't dispute that breastfeeding is good. But to equate formula with cheeze doodles is absurd.

I also remember a comment from a doctor who said that not breastfeeding was equal to riding a mechanical bull while pregnant, which is one of the stupidest things I have ever heard. IMO, too many people have an agenda where this topic is concerned. I think the media gives the impression that the only way to have a healthy child is to breastfeed, and that is simply not true.

Re: Feeding plans for when baby is here? (breast, bottle, a combination?)

I bf & supplemented. I'm surprised, although I suppose I shouldn't be about the anti-formula comments.

After having a preemie, I was told that breastfeeding was extremely important since my body was making the exact nutrients he would have been getting in utereo. Even then I was told I needed to supplement with special forumla (Neosure) for preemies. He needed to be bottlefed for the first week since he had no sucking reflex. My son & daughter were both breastfed & supplemented with formula later when my milk supply wasn't able to keep up. They're as sick as the next kid. The immunity benefits were until I got sick. Supposedly the immunity in breastmilk prevented my dd from getting the flu.

My sister bf her daughter until the age of 3, yes THREE. Her daughter was just as sick as every other kid except she would say things like "Oh, she's detoxing, I drank a lot of milk yesterday & nursed her." and I would think "and that manifests itself as pink eye??"

If you have a mom that has a job where she's eating on the run, skipping meals or eating poorly or a tired, exhausted overwhelmed mother then breastfeeding isn't the healthier option. It's about what works for you & your family.

We all have breasts, used or not, to pin our own medals on.

I'm hoping to breast feed in the beginning at least. But I will definetly pump so that the baby gets used to the bottle also. I think I might also do both so that the baby is also used to formula. I know people who have done this and it worked for them, so I hope it works for us too.

So because i formula feed my children then it's like feeding them junk food???? Chat Icon Seriously, you should think before you post things on these boards.

And I am not "knocking" breastfeeding, I am just saying that I do not necessarily believe all they say about the benefits of it all. Just because a study shows something or an MD says something does not mean its truth. Medical science is evolving all the time. ANd trust me I did a lot of research on formula v. BF.

There are numerous women on these boards who formula feed for one reason or another. To infer that what they are doing is like feeding their infant junk is just plain wrong.
