If you guys only knew what the stress levels are like all school year long.
If you've never taught you have NO IDEA.
If I didn't have summers off I'd be clinically insane!
FH is a city high school teacher - i know its stressful.
but so is my job, and I dont get a nice summer break, xmas break, feb break or easter break.
Yeah, But you get many other PERKS that we don't get!!!
Why is that people always feel that they have the RIGHT to say something about the teaching profession?
I don't say anything about huge Christmas bonus that others get and I don't! I don't say anything about the huge pay increases some get that I don't! I don't say anything about the fact that I constantly have to keep taking classes and sit in inservice meetings to be updated on things that I already do by people that have been out of my profession longer than I have been alive! I don't say anything about the fact that I rarely get to take a vacation on my vacation days. I have papers, projects and other things to do and that is the time I use to catch up! I don't say anything about the fact that for me to be out sick or take a personal day takes 3 days of work to make that happen BEFORE I CAN BE OUT, where others can just call out sick!
Whatever if you are jealous of it go back to school and be a teacher! It's one of the hardest jobs out there but yet people feel that they can always put it down or make fun of it!

my final comment - because this is getting ridiculous - is i never said teachers didnt deserve their summer vacations - just dont complain that they are ending- because there are people that have just as stressful jubs that do not get the time off to compensate. - appreciate you have them in the first place.
and go to disney in Feb - only in certain parts of the country do we have that week (my sis in virgina doesnt) - its not super crowded - but dont go the week after xmas (again since FH is a teacher we did) because its packed!!

Re: NYC teachers!!!
Posted by Melbernai Like I said, I LOVE LOVE LOVE my job. Hate having to move my classroom and switch grades every year, but I love my students to death, the most difficult ones the most.
But it doesn't mean I don't wish summer could linger a little longer.
ETA: I have been on both career sides. I was a CPA in one of the Big firms for over a decade. Sorry, but that was nothing compared to teaching!!!

Re: NYC teachers!!!
Oh and maybe this year instead of being a dedicated teacher, I should be like a normal worker and actually take my lunch and my breaks instead of giving that time to my students for free 1 on 1 tutoring!

to each is own.. we all chose are paths and careers. i tell my sister all the time, you want the summers off, then become a teacher.
I tell my BIL this all the time. Not worth arguing about...those who are not teachers can not understand...so there is no point in fighting it.

am I the only teacher who doesn't even feel like they had a summer off??? I wrote curriculum, took 5 inservice classes (at my own expense) and was just assigned a class I never taught before so lord knows how many hours I will need to prepare for that..

Re: NYC teachers!!!
of course i am going to complain my summer is almost over. two months off i and the thought of going back to a new class, new kids, new personalitlies, well it equals anxiety...like any job, there are complaints.
I am allowed to complain without having the oh but your teacher thrown in my face....
i am not going to go into the whole teacher defense. anyone who is NOT a teacher cannot truly understand. If I wasnt a teacher, I wouldnt either...

I appreciate my vacation it's the only time of year that I am not sooooooooo exhausted that I can REALLY play with my daughter (and I am exhausted from giving 100000000% to my students)
I never said you got those things I was speaking in general- like others
As for complaining about going back to work after being off from vacation-- next time I see someone complain about that after actually GOING on a vacation I will make sure to post a snotty it must be nice
You went to disney the week after christmas Must be nice I know I was home grading and lesson planning!
Whatever
Every persons job is difficult in there own way-- I don't doubt that but I am sick of hearing people always feeling they have the RIGHT to make comments about teaching!
I have a speech to right so I am done--- GOOD NIGHT!

It's horrible. I changed schools this year so I just started moving in last week.
And I was hired for 5th... but don't know if that's what I'm going to be teaching now... I may be teaching 5th, may be teaching 6th, or, perhaps, I may get to teach a combination class!
Ahh, a class with 5th and 6th graders... and two different curriculums.
Let's just hope they tell me what I'm getting before school starts

Maybe the reason why she was complaining is that this year, with our new contract (we were without one for 3 years) we have given a lot more time to the DOE without getting much compensation for doing so. We stay later now, lost many things in the new contract like the right to grieve a negative review put in our file -- we can't even contest it AT ALL ... many things that every contract just get worse and worse because the NYC leaders want to abolish unions and don't think we work hard enough for our pathetic paychecks....and this is just another way that we are being forced to give more...
all while being required to continue taking classes for the rest of our working lives. Going to college never ends for a teacher...so we have that too.
There is a very large picture that probably caused her to say that.

Year 1 2nd 3rd 4th Self-Contained Year 2 Kindergarten Collaborative (year from heaven, actually! ) Year 3 1st Grade Collaborative This year 1/2 Self-Contained.
When I FINALLY get a job on LI I am going to be such a well-rounded applicant!

appreciate you have them in the first place.
umm who says we dont appreciate our jobs???? allowed to complain just like everybody on here does about their jobs...!!!
Thats not very nice - to take half a sentence of what I said and delete the rest of it so it is completely out of context!
I said appreciate your VACATION, not your job!!
I don't think anyone ever said we didn't appreciate it... we, like anyone else, just don't want it to end. Starting a new year is filled with anxiety and stress... It's almost like starting a new job every year...
And while I have done my fair share of relaxing, I've also spent a hunk of my summer (and my paycheck) preparing for the upcoming year.

I would like to put my two sense in here, since I am a teacher also. I TOTALLY agree with the above poster and while I respect your opinion, I do ahve to agree that you don't understand the profession until you're in it YOURSELF. I agree that everyone chooses their profession, and honestly I have to say people who say "it must be nice" really dont' have a clue. I have put in COUNTLESS hours-beyond what is expected for my classroom and students. Not only has it been time away from my family, but also financially as well. I have put in so much EXTRA money into building my library, buying supplies, etc. In addition to getting my masters and classes beyond. Seriously, you have no clue.
I think you should walk a mile in someone's shoes before you pass judgement and then try to defend yourself by saying " you never bashed teachers"

haha - that you are!
I figure if I do get a combo class Language can pretty much be the same... I can do a lot of peer tutoring in math, and I'll really just have to figure out how to teach 2 science curriculums... SS isn't tested in 5th or 6th down here... so it's kind of pushed aside unfortunatly

Re: NYC teachers!!!
I remember those days from when I had 2 testing grades...
Oh and did I add that they have to give me at least 1 ESL kid this year to fulfill my pay-back time for them paying for a portion of my masters in TESOL? But I'm actually looking forward to that -- since the master's work has been exciting and I'll love testing it out. I had an ESL kid last year and she was wonderful.
I just have to say to all my teacher chicks....
ENJOY YOUR LAST FEW DAYS AND WEEKS OF YOUR SUMMER VACATION!
Rest up as MUCH AS possible because you'll need that Extra OOMPF come August 31st of whatever the lucky day is for you guys.
And from one teacher to another......THANK YOU FOR CHOSING THIS PROFESSION, helping to shape our world's future, AND KICKING @SS AT WHAT YOU DO!!!!
