so,working my day shifts i tend to get alot of guys who have nothing better to do than to ask me a zillion questions....
anyway, SO... a big one is "where are you from?"
(these ppl are obviously not familiar with NY accents otherwise they wouldnt have to ask). they claim to ask because "everyone is from somewhere else"
So, i always answer either "here", or "new york", or "long island".
can you believe that ppl have the balls to say "No you're not!"
and then have the audacity to sya long island "isnt ny"?!?!?!?
i dont get it!
heres how a convo usually goes.
idiot: "so, where are you from?"
me: "here"
idiot: "no, where are you from originally"
me: "HERE, new york"
idiot: "no youre not, what part?"
me: "UH, yes i am, long island"
idiot: "oh, well thats not really NY"
i got this the other day (and once a looong time ago on the train) and its still in my head how dumb and rude ppl are.
next time i should be like "dude, youre ON long island right now"
ok vent over. just seeing who else would take offense to this

oh yeah, then you have the ppl who say theyre "from" new york and then as you talk to them a bit you learn "well, im FROM wisconsin, but ive been in NY for 10 years now"
sorry dude, living here 70 years doesnt ever make you FROM new york. you need you be born here to have the priviledge of saying that!

I feel your pain....when asked the same question, I respond with "Brooklyn" - they say "Born and Raised?" I say "Yup, born, raised, still reside." They look at me like I'm an extinct species.

I hate that. I used to get it all the time when I was bartending. Then they'd ask me if I was trying to be an actress. Not that its a bad thing, but just the way they asked was so snide. Like I really need some drunk guy trying to pick up the bartender judging my life...please.

I've had people ask me where I'm from, and when I say Brooklyn they ask me why I don't have an accent. And I DO have an accent, it's just not as strong as some!! 
I guess some people think of New York City as the 5 boroughs and don't include Long Island in that...

It's just like Sicilians too.....they say they are Sicilian, not Italian...ummm, isn't Sicily part of Italy? Check your geography.....
And maybe they are the same ones from Long Island that aren't from New York!!!

People are stupid. I once had someone tell me that I wasn't really from NY because I live in Queens, which is on LI.

hmmm. Not al sicilians are of Italian descent though. My sicilian family is originally from Egypt, and my friend's sicilian lineage is originally Turkish.

I think this way. NYC is just the boroughs. Some people only consider Manhattan "The City".
People rarely believe I have lived in NYC just about my entire life because I don't have a NY accent at all. Some people think Boston  (not even close) or some innocuous midwestern place.

Usually when people ask if you're from NY, they want to know if you're from the city, LI isn't. I do get annoyed when people say they're from NYC and they're from LI.

People are stupid. I once had someone tell me that I wasn't really from NY because I live in Queens, which is on LI.
I got into an argument with some little twit at hofstra over this. I was like "no, I'm not from long island", she's like "Queens is on long island", I'm like, ok, topographically it's on the island, but politically, it's not part of long island...she didn't get it.
She also got really really offended when I said Happauge was "really far out"... I don't know why that's offensive.

Its the same thing as people from Brooklyn and Queens saying that they are NOT on LI....yes you are....LI is not just Nassau and Suffolk counties....physically you are ON LI!!

Yeah I mean, that's just stupid. I just get annoyed when people say they're from NYC and they're really from LI, or when people say Queens and Brooklyn are LI.
If you'd experienced my culture shock when I went from NYC schools to LI schools, you wouldn't say that. haha
ETA: Every stares at me like I'm a zoo animal when i tell the I'm a native Nyer..like "you're the 4th native NYer I've ever met! and I've been here for 5 years!"  Also, one of my previous casts thought I was from Philly because of my accent. I do NOT have a Philly accent. I have such a distinct Queens/Brooklyn accent. I could see where you would get long island from my accent, but philly? NOPE!

It's all semantics and how the question is asked...
If the question is are you from New York? Of course LI is part of NY.
Are you from NYC? No, Nassau & Suffolk are not part of NYC.
Is Queens & Brooklyn on LI? Of course.
Is living in Queens & Brookln the same as living on Long Island? No. There are seperate services & a completely different govt. structure. To lump it all together geographically (imo) would be like saying there are not 48 contiguous states -- just one big one.

this is exactly what I was thinking. NY and NYC are two different things. being from BK is no where near the same as being from LI. I would never survive. i walk everywhere and am excessively spoiled. the way of life is different. the attitudes and people are different.
I was born/raised/still reside in Brooklyn. when to HS and college in Manhattan. People are amazed by this as well. and I always get "where are you from" when I say NY..they ask if I was born here...
for some reason people think I was BORN in EUROPE. they say I speak english like I learned it abroad..sorry I don't "TAWK like this"
