I think people were more worried about the driving conditions

Blah... the roads are fine. People need to grow a set IMO. I have driven in some of the worst driving conditions (like overnight at 4am during the blizzard when it was coming down the hardest). Not too bad.

Re: I mean, seriously

Our school only closed if there was 6 or more inches on the ground. My college never closed no matter how much snow we got. Upstate NY was much better about handling snow than LI. Workers would clear snow throughout the night just so the students could get to class. I remember about 5 or 6 years ago there was supposed to be a huge snow storm and tons of schools and colleges closed in anticipation. It never even snowed. Chat Icon

I think kids have it better than we did, but if I were a parent I'd rather the schools be cautious than deal with the potential consequences of dangerous driving conditions.

Re: I mean, seriously

Last year when it snowed, people were getting stuck on Shelter Rock Rd, between Northern Blvd and the Expressway, where there is a grade change and the road dips. The snow wasn't that deep, but the plows hadn't hit it yet and cars were getting backed up and stuck.

Last year, I left at 3 when we had that major storm and it took me 3 times longer than usual to get home. I will do the same thing if it happens today. If that makes me a wimp, than so be it. I would rather use a couple of hours of personal time and not have a car accident. Just because I might be able to drive in it doesn't mean I want to and I get really stressed out by the other drivers on the road, more than the conditions themselves.

Re: I mean, seriously

School districts are way too lacks when it comes to handing out school days and when snow really hits and they are out of snow days (which most likely won't happen this year anyway) then they complain they have to take away vacation days. Chat Icon

Re: I mean, seriously

I'm in White Plains, and almost all of the Westchester schools were closed, with about 6 of them having an early dismissal. I think another reason they closed is to let parents know that they have to either stay home or get a sitter. When there's an early dismissal, it's often difficult for people to leave their jobs and run home for their kids.

I'm sorry... but cars going sideways is not due to slushy snow. Its due to BAD DRIVERS.

I dunno... i just never seem to have this problem. I drive a tiny sports car with summer Z rated racing tires that are NOT made for snow. I drive cool, calm, and collected in the snow so maybe thats why I never have issues.

I think a lot of drivers get "too nervous" about the snow and then over-compensate their driving and they start to swerve back and fourth. That makes for a very dangerous situation.

I guess i'll have to take your word for it then.

I am sure there will be a record amount of accidents today. I am not denying that.

When I am driving in conditions like this... I drive "preventively". I do not drive around or close to anyone I suspect is "driving nervous".
