we pay for their medical expenses, schools, ***!

I'm sorry but i dont understand. These people are not looking for handouts, and they are not all on welfare. They want to get an education, and be able to contribute to society.

That may be true, but regardless of their intentions, their children still must be given an education at the tax payers expense.

so make them legal and let them pay taxes.
they are ALREADY here- MILLIONS of them- do you think this legislation is going to do anything to force them out?
It's just stupid.
Let them be here legally & participate in the system.

What I don't get is, why are these people marching with flags from countries they had to sneak out of in search of a better life? Chat Icon

I am all for a crackdown. they're a HUGE drain on our tax system and costing us more than they're saving in "cheap labor"

What's the difference between that and St Patrick's Day, Greek Independence Day, etc- most Americans identify with their "home countries"- why can't newer immigrants.

I actually like Bush's plan- I think it's better for us to make those illegal immigrants legal- so they pay into the system and pay for those services that they are using. In addition, all companies should be required to pay ALL workes a living wage: immigrant, citizen, national, etc.

I find it funny when all the Hampton's people complain about the immigrants, yet they have no problem paying them to take care of their houses or lawn on the cheap.

I have a close friend that is an illegal here- she cannot do anything and she is exploited by her bosses, made to work insane hours, treated like crap and she has no recourse. I feel horribly that she has fallen through the system- and that there is nothing the government will do to help her, save deport her. The country has nothing to lose by making her illegal, and quite frankly- she- and the millions of other illegals, are taking jobs no one wants anyway- so why not allow them to do it, and allow them to do it on the books, pay taxes, etc.

Agree!

But what kind of message does that send, you can break the law and still get to be here legally. I don't know what the answer is, but that doesn't seem right either

That may not be the ideal situation, but its not like you can take everyone that is in this country illegally and kick them out. What would happen to all of the children that have been born here that are US citizens.

there is a HUGE difference. those people are trying to "make a point" that they want to stay in America and wanted to be treated like an American and are marching with a Mexican flag? sorry, but their point gets lost.

I am not against immigrants, but they need to be here legally! no one else puts up with it. why should America?

They choose to come here illegally, so that is a choice.

And while I am sure some do want to become legal, others don't. They just want to make whatever money they can to send home.

I do belive that they want to be legal. No one wants to be alone in a country without their family, while working for very little money and living with the fear of deportation. Those who came illegally would of loved to come legally but the had no choice.

I live in a town with a substantial population of immigrants from Guatemala. A good percentage (I believe it's estimated that 70%)of them are illegal. There has been a push to have some of them deported, as there have been some problems (but considering the number, a small percentage). However, it is virtually impossible. Deportation has to be done at the federal level and it takes a lot for anything to be done. I think one person has been deported recently, and again, that probably represents a really small percentage. I don't think that the average immigrant has to fear deportation.

My aunt in Seattle attempted to get someone deported. He committed statutory rape (he was 25 and dating my 16 year old cousin). And it was nearly impossible. When he finally was deported, he got back in easily. Deportation is a joke.

My feelings, regardless of reasons, is...it's ILLEGAL and should be punishable just like any other illegal activity. If I stole $500.00 from a bank because I was starving and needed to feed my family and myself...does my reason make it okay? NO, it's still ILLEGAL.

This is not coming from someone that doesn't have family experience in this area. My grandparents escaped from Nazi Germany and legally immigrated to this country through unimaginable conditions. If they could do, many who want to immigrate here can do it legally.

I think it was hard to prove anything, and just because someone is sent to jail does not necessarily mean they will be deported. I think he eventually racked up too many DWIs and I think that was what got him deported. Also, my cousin was not initially cooperating. Chat Icon It was a whole big saga.

Who does america belong to? Who are the natives of this country. I'm sure your ancestors came from somewhere else. People come here to be free. This is America. The most diversed country in the world. These people do not wish to remain illegal!. I agree that they entered illegally but now its time to help them become legal, and live the free life that they came here for.

The natives of this country are Native Americans who were part of a genocide in which they were almost eliminated and had their land stolen from them.

Re: Illegal immigration debate

I personally believe that many of these immigrants need to be deported. I think it sends the wrong message to all these third poor world countries that it's OK to come illegally because eventually some kind of amnesty will be put through and they will be made legal to stay in this country. But looking at this issue, it will take billions to send all these people back to their countries. I also feel that they should be sent back because there are millions of people that want to come to the US and they will wait for their turn and do so it legally.
It's very true that many of the jobs that they do many people will not do them for the kind of money they are paid. I think a solution to that will be to allow a certain amount of immigrants to enter the country to work for a certain amount of years and after their time is up, they go back to their country and give another group their chance. That way, we know who's here in the country and also they will be able to contribute to the resources they are using.
And I think that there's like a stereotype that illegal immigrants are only Mexican or Guatamelan etc but there are plenty of polish, Oriental, and Russian Illegal immigrants so I do hope if they are going to do this, that they target everyone that is....not only specific groups....granted that there are probably more of Mexican, Guatemalan etc but there are also other groups as well.
Each person that crosses the border ilegally is doing it illegaly and hence breaking the law. Any way you slice it, they are criminals.
