Parents - what do you think of this?

My 9 year old brother got an earring!

He had been wanting it for a long time. Since he made a significant improvement in his schoolwork, my stepmom approached my dad about it. My dad was originally the one who was against it meanwhile my stepmom was the one pushing for it. My dad was trying to think of a different way to reward my brother but in the end my stepmom "won" the discussion. They took him to the mall on the weekend and suprised him.

Well my dad called me last night and told me and I was very suprised! He said so was my very strict German grandmother (lives in FL)....its entirely out of character for that side of the family but I guess its okay on my stepmoms side.

I guess its a double standard since I got mine at 5 years old but then again my brother and I have a different mother.

Anyone have opinions on little BOYS getting earrings? Id like hear different perspectives.

Re: Parents - what do you think of this?

I have no problems with guys having earings but I do think 9 is a little young for that!! Maybe when they are like 14 or 15

I agree w/ Lisa. I have no problems w/ it but I think they should be at least 16.

Re: Parents - what do you think of this?

well times have changed since I was little a lot of boys in my son s middle school have their ears pierced.....I think if the parents are ok with it then its not that big of a deal, its not like they are getting a tattoo or something! In years to come if they dont want it they can just take it out

My girlfriend just went through this with her son. He is 8 and she let him get it. All his friends have one too, so I guess this is all the rage now. DH and I discussed it and he is admanat that the answer would be no way. I am torn, I think there are certain things to give in on, is an earring all that bad? It allows him to have his own sense of style. It can always be taken out later on. So IMO I don't think it is bad I would say yes, but DH says no. So I guess in our house if I couldn't convince DH we would stay together on th issue and say no.

I have a 9 yr old & the answer is NO.
He goes to private school & its not allowed so he's not itching for one because none of the other boys have one either.

Later on,lets say high school...if he'd really want one, then it would be OK.

Re: Parents - what do you think of this?

many of my 7th grade boys have earrings. honestly, it's not the end of the world. it is one of those things that if he decides he doesn't like it, he can just take it out - no harm done.

I would never let my 9 year old son get an earring. My daughter isn't getting hers done until she's older. I'd find another way to reward him.

Re: Parents - what do you think of this?

That is way to young! My brother couldn't get his till he was 14, and even then my parents wanted to wait, but he was driving them crazy about it so my dad took him.

Too young, IMO. However, if I had a daughter I would pierce her ears as a baby. Go ahead call me a hypocrite, I don't care. Chat Icon

There was actually an article in Newsday's part 2 yesterday that dealt with this kind of thing.

Newsday Article

I myself would want to wait till my son was older.

IMO 9 is too young but I am if I had to choose I'd rather my teenager get an earring or grow their hair then get a tatoo.

So many of my student's parents allow them to get tatoos at such a young age... 15, 16... I can't imagine they won't regret it in the future.

Re: Parents - what do you think of this?

My brothers both got them very young - in grammer school so I am not opposed to them. If it is a style and not harmful - I am not too opposed to it. My DH feels otherwise. So hopefully if my kid wants one when he is older - we can hold him off until hs and they DH felt he was old enough to make the decision.

Re: Parents - what do you think of this?

absolutely NOT! i don't care how you slice or dice it, or how times have changed. a nine year old boy being allowed to pierce his ear is ridiculous IMO. so when he's 13, will he be allowed to get a tattoo!??? (thats a rhetorical question, not really looking for an answer)
