8th Grade Graduations
sorry, I am not feeling it. I don't want to give a gift, my brother and cousins just made their confirmation and I gave a gift for that. My sister graduated college and my other graduated HS, both in the last 3 weeks. It is 8th grade, I feel like it is being blown out of proportion. Prom, graduation, and parties. I think I am boycotting. Am I the only one who did not wear a cap and gown in 8th grade?

yeah, things seems to be getting out of hand.  when i graduated, i did th cap and gown thing, but we just had a backyard bbq.

My brother and cousins are having a prom, an 8th grade class trip, a big graduation, and now they are all throwing parties. I don't see what the accomplishment is....they are 13. they must go to school and study.

Totally understand what you mean. I wore a cap and gown for my 8th grade graduation but i remember my parents took me out for dinner - we didn't do anything overly extragavent.

cap and gown for 8th grade?????? We had a moving up ceremony I don't think we did anything after that either LOL. Kids are graduating from Kindergarden now

I didn't have a cap and gown. I think I just went out to lunch w/ my immediate family for the 8th grade graduation.

these kids have announcements made and everything. Parents are renting out halls. First they used the excuse that boys don't do sweet 16, so this is their party. Then girls started doing this too.

My niece is graducating the 8th grade Sat and she has a cap and gown. The family is just going out to eat afterwards. I understand what you are saying, she wanted a party but since my SIL did not do anything the family is just going out to eat. I think the party would of been a waste of money.

oh I know..I hate it. your cousin turns 16 and all of a sudden you get an invite to a mini wedding? Parents need to get a grip. My brother's school does communions on different days(instead of the whole class making it together) because parents were fighting over the halls. so now, communions are spread out over 5 weeks so that they have a better chance at halls.

As for the 8th grade, I think I wore a gown (can't remember that far back ) but we only had a bbq at the house
first b-days? what about any b-day? what happened to cake and a poster of a donkey and a blindfold? a great party was when the kid had a pool. My aunts constantly compete with the other kids in the class. In January this year, my cousin had a pool party at the YMCA. he does not even swim, but no one had that party yet.

We had a big graduation ceremony from 8th grade, but we were actually leaving the school. It only went up to 8th grade. As far as a party went, it was a BBQ, no big thing, and that's what we did for Birthdays too.

I teach in a middle school where we (as a school, not me) go all out. Trip (to Great Adventure) full blown graduation and a prom at a place I could not have afforded for my wedding.
IMO, it's a bit much. I do understand the idea that this will be the only graduation some of these kids have. But I think teachers (myself included) in my school would be better served in encouraging them to continue with their educations.
Another issue specific to my school is that most of these kids are not deserving. They aren't well-behaved, and do the bare minimum and expect to have things handed to them. Unfortunately, this is most of the kids. The first year at that school I did have a group that was mostly wonderful, but even then I thought we went overboard.
I wish we did more for that small group of kids in my school who really, really worked hard and/or excelled. We reward mediocrity (and less) and it's a problem.

I teach 8th grade in a school whee NOTHING is done for these kids when they go from 8th to 9th grade.
I feel pretty badly for them becuse the school does nothing to make a deal about it....they had a 40 minute assembly where they got awards...but it ran out of time, so pretty much was teachers reading lists of kids names.
They had a BBQ to celebrate, with the 7th graders
They had a dance to celebrate, again, with the 7th graders.
I don't think that people should be out renting halls and buying gowns....but i remember we had a special dance and got dressed up and it was special.
It is a big deal to go from middle school to high school....it's a totally different environment for them next year.

While it may not seem important to you, I am sure it is important to them. My cousin is graduating the 8th grade and we are very proud of her. We are going to attend graduation and give her a gift. She is very special to me, therefore this event is special in my eyes. As will her prom, hs graduation, college, wedding, etc....
I guess what I am trying to say is look past the "present" and focus on the accomplishment and special occasion. Everyone is always complaining about gift giving, while it may takes its toll on your wallet, it is so much more than that. At least that is the way I look at it. I do it because I want too and I don't complain about it. Especially if the person is important to me. JMHO

I went to a junior high (Janice, I.S. 75 in Huguenot) where 8th grade graduation was a big deal. I wore a graduation gown, but no cap. We had a "senior banquet" which was essentially a mini prom. I even took a limo there with my friends! We had a trip to great adventure. Looking back, I think it was a bit ridiculous, but it was fun at the time!

I am sure it is big in their lives, and fun(shot out to SI Jax ) but I feel like another party? We were just at their confirmation in april. Maybe it is because I have a large family that I feel like it is constant gift giving

But I have to give a card though. I don't think people should be put on the spot to give a card everytime a kid sneezes. If you want to celebrate, invite me over for cake and I will say congrats. But I have a brother and two cousins graduating 8th grade. It needs to stop somewhere.

We did not have an 8th grade graduation, because our High School and middle School was one and the same...grades 7-12 in the one school...we did have a 6th grade graduation, where we left the elementaryn school...we all just work our sunday best...iand aftert that, I remember going out to lu nch with some of my frineds and our parents to Meson Ole!

WHY because this is why these Dumb ARSE kids HAVE to HAVE BMW and MERCEDES and a cell phone at 5... Let the kid work for crap.. Ok yes they graduated jr. High woohooo but when the graduate High School you are going to have to top that and college top that and wedding shower top that and wedding top that and baby shower YUP Top that.... Its stupid
