Need Information on Wee Wee Pad Training

Any advice you have would be great.

Last night he pooped in two places that weren't the wee wee pad. I wiped down the two spots with water and white vinegar. Then he pee'd on a mat near the front door. I put that in the wash and wiped down the floor with Vinegar and water. Then this morning he pooped right next to the front door. Do you pick him up in mid poop and try to get him to the wee wee pad or do I let him do his thing and then clean it up? I wiped that spot down with vinegar and water too.

I dont understand why he doesnt use his wee wee pad if he was wee wee pad trained at his last house....

Any information you have will be greatly appreciated. Websites, books what ever will help us.

We watched Chewie when he was a puppy at all times and when we saw him sniffing around or circling, we would bring him to the paper to go. We always gave him some Cheerios to praise him when he went on the paper. Thats worked well for us. Yell no when he doesn't go to the paper and bring him to the paper to show him where to go.

Thats what I have been doing - I feel bad cause then he puts his little tail between his legs....and give me those sad puppy eyes....It kills me.

How long does it usually take till he catches on?

It might sound a little gross, but when Pyxie was having a hard time getting to the pee pad what we did was take the towel that we blotted the pee with & kind of mushed it into the pee pad. Once she started looking for her scent she found the pad fine after that.

Hmmm thats interesting

I emailed the last owner and she said she had a wee wee pad in the dogs cage, and one in the normal spot in the living room and one upstairs. She said she would put one down where ever she would see him go. That might be the problem. The dog was used to doing his thing every where

When Molly goes on the wee wee pad we say "Good Poopy" (I know annoying!!!!) everytime and then we will give her some sort of treat. When she misses the pad - if we catch her in the act we will say "Bad poopy"

Same thing for when she pees - which she def. has more accidents off the wee wee pad then the poops. It's annoying and VERY frustrating but remember this is a new environement for him - he will get used to it soon.

Another thing I do - when I take Molly to someone's house (which you may want to try in yours right now) is when I put the wee wee pad down I say "Go Potty" like 5 times so that she knows to go potty on the pad.

When I take the dog out of the cage, I automatically put him on the wee wee pad and he looks at me and trys to walk away.....

Do you do this or do you wait a little b4 bringing hem over to the wee wee pad?

I was doing that in the beginning but she never had to go when I did it. I think they have to go a little while after they wake up.

Last night was the FIRST night I said to Molly "Go Potty" and she actually went. We were going to bed (and now she sleeps with us so I wanted her to go before she got up in the bed. Normally though she just goes on her own.
Also - keep the wee wee pads in the same exact place every time. I notice that if DH moves the wee wee pad slightly she will miss it.

Well I think he thinks the wee wee pad is the door mat, because that is where he hit twice yesterday.

I will wait to see if he starts smelling stuff and then bring him to the wee wee pad.

The last owner told me to put a wee wee pad in the cage with him. Do you think I should do that? She said she had his bead in there, his food bowl and his water bowl and a wee wee pad. I dont know how she fit everything

No - you aren't supposed to put a wee wee pad in the cage. That's supposed to be their comfort zone and they won't go where they sleep.

Do you have a really big cage for him?

nope thats why I didnt understand why she would put a wee wee pad in there.

The cage is big enough for his bed, a blanket bunched up....and his two food dishes

I find that my dogs are really good with peeing on the wee wee pad, but pooping it's hit or miss.
They usually poop after they have a meal, so what I would do is take them out to the yard. You might want to try walking him? Instead of having him always go on the wee wee pad? I feel the wee wee pad is for times that going out isn't an option.

I tried to take Molly out to the yard - and she just laid on the ground and wouldn't work. Looks like we will have to stick with the wee wee pads for now.

Scott - if you could try to take him out for walks now and since he is going by the door - maybe you try brining him outside and see what happens.

Molly does some CRAZY spins before she has to poop - you will get to know all of his signs soon enough.

It was my understanding that you are not supposed to put a wee wee pad in the crate because you do not want them to go to the bathroom where they eat or sleep.

We used a great book which helped "Positive Puppy Training Works" by Joel Walton. Good luck, it takes time and patience

I also read no pads in crates - crates should be clean and appealing to them. It might be too big if your puppy can pee in it and still find a clean place.

We had a pretty bad times with wee wee pads. OUr dog got totally confused when we went from pads to outside.

But to get him to go on the pads we we act like he just peeped rivers of pure gold, we would hug and kiss him and tell him he was the best dog ever. We wouldn't scold too much if he didn't go on the pads, but we would be silent and say No, calmly.

Yeah - I am not going to put the pads in the cage. I thought that was odd.

We tried to walk him yesterday, but he didnt want to go. He didnt like. The woman I got the dog from said he just likes to smell the air.....but he doesnt like to walk outside

Sorry never took em yesterday - we had so much company. Everyone wants to see Tiny. Today our nephew is sleeping over, and tomorrow my dad and my other two nephews are coming over.

We are still working on housebreaking too. It takes a while. We skipped the wee wee pad training and take her outside. I stand there and say "go potty" and she goes. We take her outside ALOT. Everytime she goes i tell her she is good and she gets a small piece of a carrot. Eventually you will pick up on what they need to do and when. Make sure you praise!

When she has an accident inside and we catch her in the act we say "NO" and take her outside to finish. No treat then. If she has an accident and you don't catch her there is really nothing you can do. I clean it up and thats it- if you yell at them after it happens they will have no idea why.

Because she is not fully housebroken she is not allowed to have full rein (sp?) of the house. It is very important that you catch them in the act of having an accident otherwise they will think it is ok.

I believe the goal with Pad training is to get them to go on the pads. Once they get that move the pads outside and encourage them to go outside, eventually taking away the pads.

You got a chihuahua right? I would reccomend getting a book about them.. I love the "For Dumbies" books. Maybe they have tips specific to your breed.

Oh yea and Scott - a great treat for them that Molly loves is frozen mini carrots. Someone on here told me about them and they work wonders!!! It takes Molly about 15 mins to eat it (bc she plays with it for awhile at first) and she really likes it. Plus, it gives me 15 mins of free time.

A few things we did/ You can rub the pee or the poo on the wee wee pad so they smell their scent there.

Also what yoyu can do is use a gate to keep the puppy confined to a small area..with just enough room for a bed, a litle walking room and a wee wee pad. The puppy won't pee on the bed (hopefully) so they only other choice will be the wee wee pad. over a few days, you can expand the area the puppy's allowed alone in, but keeping the wee wee pad and the bed, so gradually they will learn to go on the wee wee pad. Also, try to keep the wee wee pad as close to where it will be as possible. I've found that once they'ee used to goign in a particular spot, they will go in that spot whether there is a wee wee pad there or not!

I just read an interesting article on the subject...She said to put a piece of the poop on the wee wee pad so he knows where to go
