Was anyone told they were having a big/small baby and they were wrong??

Was anyone else told that they would be having a "big" baby and they were wrong?

Today at my doctors appointment, the doctor said that the baby looked big and that she doesnt want me going to 40 weeks. She didnt do a sono, only measured me with that tape thing. She is concerned that if I go the full 40 weeks the baby will be 10 pounds or more. I was upset by this but then I heard that these things are often wrong. Did anyone have this happen to them??

they told me I was having a much smaller baby than I had. I think MRSJ was told she was having a really big baby and that wasn't the case. They are VERY often wrong!

I was suppose to have a big baby too, they told me the larger side of normal since she was weighing 5lbs at 32 weeks. My DD was born right on time on the lower end of avg at 7lbs 2ozs

Re: Was anyone told they were having a big/small baby and they were wrong??

It's ridiculous because they say the sono can be off by 2-3 lbs. Um, hello, 2-3lbs can make the difference between a tiny and a huge baby! 4 days before I delivered my daughter I got a sono and they told me I was going to have a BIG BABY. Well, 4 days later Alex was born, a whopping 6lbs, 1 ounce! Have faith in your body's capabilities, and always push back on your doctor...

my ob said i'd probably have a 7-7.5 lb baby and my ds was 9lb 5oz. i was 10 days late though. i wouldn't put too much faith in what your ob said. the sonos are pretty inaccurate so i would imagine that just going by the tape measure would be even less accurate.

I was told that there was no way that she would be over 5lbs because of the position she was in (not by the sonos) and she was 8lbs 13 ounces. They were wrong!

Oh don't even get me started.
They told me at the growth sono that the babies measurements showed that he was a dwarf.
Um, absolutely not. He was 6lbs 6oz and 19-1/2 inches long.
I won't even tell you what they put my family through.

OMG YES!!

I was told that my baby would be 10+ lbs if I went to my due date. They were pushing me weeks before my due date to have a c/s. They sent me for growth sonos every week - sometimes twice a week. Every time it was the same thing - they said I was having a giganto baby. At something like 35 weeks they said the head was measuring at 42 weeks and the body was measuring at 39 or 40 wks...(I don't remember the exact measurements).

I insisted I did NOT want a c/s...so they let me wait. At 38 1/2 wks they told me I had too much amniotic fluid and were worried that if my water broke on it's own it could A) tear the placenta or B) cause a cord accident (because the HUGE gush of water). So I agreed to being helped along a little I was worried about my HUMUNGO baby Chat Icon Pushing out a baby the size of a toddler wasn't very appealing.

Anyway long story short, I was brought in but was going on my own and had 22 hrs of labor...2 of it was pushing...and ended up needed an emergency c/s anyway to get the baby out bc we were both in distress...

Well....they were RIGHT I had a TON of fluid...but as for the 10+ pounder they told me I was having...they were SO wrong. Katie was 6 lbs 15 oz. Chat Icon Chat Icon tiny little thing!!

Re: Was anyone told they were having a big/small baby and they were wrong??

I guess I am the only one that they were right with. From the growth sonos they said big baby but my doctor wanted me to go naturally and when I went past my due date I insisted on something being scheduled. They tried to induce me and it didnt work and I had her by c-section. She was 9 10 and then the doctor said that I would not have been able to deliever her.
I hope I am not scaring you by sharing this. It seems for the majority they are wrong and everything worked out just fine for me.

Re: Was anyone told they were having a big/small baby and they were wrong??

I sooooo do not trust what the sonos say.
When I was at 37 weeks - they told me that my baby was too small. The baby was in the 5th percentile for babies at that many weeks.
Then the next week - they told me that they baby gained 1 1/2lbs. Then the next week they told me the baby gained another 1 1/2lbs. They told me that the baby was going to be around 9lbs.
Well, she was born weighing 7lbs 2oz.
The doctor told me that sometimes when they are sunnyside up (which Alison was) the measurement of the baby's head can be off by a whole pound. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

My doctor's office had me stressed out that my daughter was measuring over 10 lbs. I was 8 days late and wound up with a c/s and she was only 7 lbs 15 oz

Re: Was anyone told they were having a big/small baby and they were wrong??

Every time I had a sono with DD, they told me what a BIG baby she was. I had a placenta previa and had a previous c-secion, so I knew I was having another. When I started going into labor before my scheduled c, the doctors kept saying, "It's a good thing, b/c this is a BIG baby!" My HUGE baby weighed 6 lbs. 15 oz.!!!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I was told DD would be an 8lb baby - she was (8lbs 6oz) but she was born 2 weeks early. The day before her due date she was 9lbs 7oz.

On the other hand my good friend was told her baby was measuring around 7 or 8 lbs - Days later he was born and weighed 10lbs 1oz.

The dr.'s were pretty much right on for me, but totally wrong for my friend - So I take what they say with a grain of salt.

Good luck!

Kevin measured big all long and was born 7lbs 2oz but was 3 weeks early...but he was right on target to his latest sono.

My SIL's baby measured big all along - to the point the day of her induction (41+ weeks) they argued to give her a c saying the baby was over 10lbs (a sono done the day of!!) - the thought about inducing her early since it was so big but they said baby looked too comfy and didn't want to move her - - well baby was born only 8.5 lbs and over 9 days late - so go figure. My other friend was predicted to have 10lber - well he came 2 weeks early and was just 7lbs. This is just a couple of a lot of stories I heard like this.

Re: Was anyone told they were having a big/small baby and they were wrong??

I measured 3 weeks ahead with the tape and never had a sono. OB just told me a decent sized baby. I figure 8ish pounds. Well, I had him at almost 41 weeks (induced) and did fine with pushing a 9 pound baby out. It was hard, but he was big all around (head circumference and length too)

I say you never until until you have it. I also think that you should be able to choose to labor on your own (it's truly the only way you can be told if you cannot have a big baby) if that's what you want.

I also want to add I was not induced because of size. I have a huge problem with swelling in the end. I had it with my first, too.

They estimated my 1st to be 10 lb, 1oz about 4 days before I delivered him (vaginally). He was 9 lb, 5 oz. They thought #2 was in the "8 pound range" and he was 8 pounds even. Chat Icon
